1. Introduction

This course is designed for people working in the tourism industry. English for International Tourism is available at two levels, Lower Intermediate (B1) and Upper Intermediate (B2). Similar contexts are covered at both levels; however, complexity and range of language is increased at the Upper Intermediate level.

Each module is organised in sections, each section focusing on common functions found within different sectors of the tourism industry; for example, giving information, responding to questions, making arrangements, dealing with problems, etc. Sections are also based on different contexts; for example, tourist information, tour guidelines, making a presentation of a tourist activity, etc. Each of these contexts implies a specific vocabulary and language area. Alongside focus on vocabulary, common expressions and grammar, learners receive practice in listening, pronunciation, speaking and writing (2 speaking tutorials and 2 writing tutorials).

Each module is divided into six sections, a final test and a feedback section. Each section has a clear context and focuses on skills practice, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

The total time tutors should spend on conducting and marking tutorials per module is 1 hour 30 minutes. This corresponds to 15 minutes on each writing tutorial and 30 minutes on each speaking tutorial (20-minute conversation).

In addition to the tutorials, the students will find a ten-item test at the end of each section (a total of six tests of this type). There is also a longer, more complete test at the end of the module (Final test).

Tour guide: Yes, unfortunately there is. I'm afraid there has been an overbooking on the wetlands birdwatching tour that you and your husband booked.

Mrs Johansen: Oh no! That's a bit of a disappointment!

Tour guide: We're very sorry about this. We've only just been informed ourselves about the overbooking. However, we've been working hard to come up with an alternative for you and would like to see what you think.

Mrs Johansen: Alternative! Oh. OK. Is there a similar tour that we could join if it's impossible to go on the one we booked?

Tour guide: Yes, there is. Actually, there are two places free on the Monegros tour, which also starts tomorrow.
