English 2 week plan:Day 1/2Research information on animals in captivity v animals in the wild.Have a go at the grammar activity on Purple Mash and the handwriting activity.

Can you find out any information that states why animals should be kept in captivity ie a zoo. Ie they receive care if poorly, they get daily food, they have company. Then look at why they should be kept in the wild: freedom, with their family, own habitat etc. Also look at against points ie in captivity: no space to move around, same boring food, not with their family. Against for wild: can be hunted by man or other animals, no help if they become sick.

Write research down on your page

Day 3Make a plan for a balanced argument

Plan each paragraph. Ideal it will contain an introduction paragraph, 2 for and 2 against and a conclusion paragraph. Think about what

Plan in paragraphs or thought

Title: Should animals be kept in captivity or kept in the wild?

point you want to make in each paragraph. bubbles

Day 4Write an introduction paragraph

This should be an introduction to your argument. Keep it factual and no opinion of your own should be included. Tell me what you are going to be talking about. Ie In this following report I will be discussing should animals be kept in captivity or left in their natural habitat in the wild. I will be looking at the fact animals receive medical assistance in the zoo’s, whilst in the wild they would die as no help would be available. etc

Use Y4 featuresFronted adverbials, subordinate clauses, conjunctions

Day 5Write a FOR paragraph

Write a FOR paragraph only. If you believe they should be kept in captivity then write why. If you think they should be kept in the wild then why? Back up your ideas with your evidence ie I think animals should be kept in the wild in their natural environment as they are kept with their family and can run around freely. Keep it to one or two ideas.

In this report, In many zoos, In natural habitats,

Day 6Write an AGAINIST paragraph

Write an AGAINST paragraph – which ever side you chose ie for captivity then write your against ie In many zoos, animals are enclosed in small spaces with not much room to roam around, this causes depression within the animals.

Day 7

Write another FOR paragraph

State another couple of FOR ideas from your research

Day 8Write another paragraph for AGAINST

State another couple of paragraphs from your research

Day 9Write a conclusion to your balanced argument

Tell me which one you believe should happen ie in the wild or in captivity and back this up with a few examples from your for paragraphs as to why you think this. Ie: In conclusion, I believe that animals should be kept in captivity as they receive all the help they need if they are sick and having breeding programmes to stop extinction of some animals in danger.

In conclusion, In this balanced argument,

Day 10Edit and improve work

Check your spellings, punctuation and hand writing! Could you add any features to improve your writing.

Comprehension:Read the following text, look up any words that you don’t know online or use a dictionary and then answer the questions below:Jimmy lay in his bed and closed his eyes. He was thinking about all the good things that happened on the school trip earlier that day. Mrs Richards had forced the class to wander around a boring old museum just because they were learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Everyone knew that visiting a museum was the worst kind of school trip teachers had ever invented, but luckily Jimmy had come prepared. He smiled as he thought about it. It wasn’t the frog he’d let loose in the ladies’ toilets that made him smile or when he’d let off a stink bomb during lunch – it wasn’t even when he’d sneaked a fake poo into Alice Thornley’s sandwich - no, it was what he’d ‘borrowed’ from the museum as a souvenir that Jimmy was so happy about. Jimmy was too excited to sleep. He opened one eye and uncurled his fingers. Wow, he thought to himself, twiddling what looked like a model of a shiny beetle in his hand, Tutankhamun’s lost heart scarab! He’d borrowed it when the boring old museum guide was droning on about the pharaoh’s curse or something. It just kind of called out to him so he grabbed it when she wasn’t looking. He kissed the scarab for good luck then tried to drift off to sleep. POOOOF! Suddenly, out of thin air, a rather thin looking, half-naked man appeared, draped in expensive-looking jewellery. “Waaaaghh!” the man squealed as he jumped in fright. “Arrgghh!” Jimmy squealed back. The strange man seemed confused and peered around Jimmy’s bedroom. “Okaaaaay,” he said, shrugging. “Wasn’t expecting that.” Jimmy stared at the scarab then back at the man. “Anyhoo, let’s get on with this shall we?” the man said cheerfully before clearing his throat. “Ahem. Right then. Osiris! Great God of the Underworld!” he boomed. “I am Tutankhamun, King of Egypt, living image of Amun! Will you let me pass?” Jimmy pulled the covers high over his nose. The man waited, arms stretched in the air. Then he smiled. That’s when Jimmy lost it. “Mummy!” he shrieked. Questions:1. What did Jimmy do to Alice Thornley’s sandwich? 2. ‘…it was what he’d ‘borrowed’ from the museum…’ Why do you think the word borrowed is written in inverted commas in the story? 3. What do you think caused the strange man to appear? 4. Write down how you think Jimmy was feeling at these points in the story: a) Finding out the school trip was a visit to a museum. b) When he let a frog loose in the ladies’ toilets. c) When the strange man appeared out of thin air.
