Oliver Cromwell evidence.Using the 10 pieces of evidence, you must note down at least 12 facts on Oliver Cromwell.Evidence One: Rivalry & Conflict textbook – page 48.“In August 1649, 12,000 soldiers of Oliver Cromwell’s “New Model Army” arrived in Ireland. He captured the towns of Drogheda, Wexford, Cork, Kinsale, Kilkenny and Clonmel. When Cromwell left Ireland in 1650, the rebels were well and truly beaten.”

Evidence Two: Rivalry & Conflict textbook – page 49.The Cromwellian Act of Settlement (1652)“As a reward for defeating the Irish, Cromwell gave Irish land to many of his soldiers, to pay them for fighting for him. As a result, many Irish people lost their land. Even those, who were allowed to keep property were given smaller and poorer farms in the West of Ireland (Connaught). Many Irish people thought it was like Hell and used the slogan, “To Hell or Connaught”.

Evidence Three: Alice Stopford Green – Irish nationalist and historian.“The memory of the black curse of Cromwell lives among the people. He remains in Ireland as a great example of inhuman cruelties.”

Evidence Four: Robert Kee’s “Ireland: A History” Page 46.“Cromwell’s ruthless action at Drogheda happened because it was commanded by an English Catholic, Sir Arthur Aston. “I forbade them to spare any that were in arms (holding weapons) in the town…women and children were caught up in the process. I think we put to the sword altogether about 2,000. We left no priest alive.”“Where Sir Arthur Aston is concerned…he was beaten to death with his own wooden leg.”

Evidence Six: Robert Kee’s “Ireland: A History” Page 46.“Cromwell seems to have seen himself at Drogheda as accomplishing God’s work by avenging the atrocities of the 1641 rebellion. But the people of Drogheda had played no part in the rebellion.”Cromwell’s own words after capturing Drogheda.“When the troops surrendered, they were knocked on the head and every tenth soldier was killed. I think that this is a good punishment from God for Irish rebels who have their hands stained in blood.”

Evidence Seven: Robert Kee’s “Ireland: A History” Page 48.“Wexford suffered even worse than Drogheda. Being stormed (attacked) whilst negotiating surrender, Cromwell’s men ran amok in the town, killing at least 2,000, of whom 200 were said to be women and children slaughtered in the market-place.”Percentage of land owned by Irish Catholics in 1641 – 59%.Percentage of landed owned by Irish Catholics in 1650 – 22%”
