ONU SUMMER Design: Think. Know. Do., June 2006HONORS The camp introduced students to basic design methods, processes, INSTITUTE visual principles and underlying theory of working in two-dimensional and (summer camp) three-dimensional design. Using a wide variety of technologies, both

Manual and electronic, students redesigned a new prescription bottle system.

Design: Think. Know. Do., June 2007This academic camp exposed students to a variety of design disciplines, design methodology and creativity through the process of building a temporary, emergency shelter system. The project expanded students’ view of problem solving and design research methods, encouraged a broad scope of analysis and interpretation, and promoted concept development.

Design: Think. Know. Do., July 2008This camp provided students with an opportunity to have a direct influence on the visual and physical presence of a section of the local village through initiating a strategy for urban renewal projects. Students extended beyond discipline-specific boundaries and investigated main street commercial architecture as a reflection of community character and identity, historical and cultural trends, commercial enterprise, marketing and advertising.Students created a model and a system to address the primary opportunities of navigation, orientation and discovery.

Design: Think. Know. Do., July 2009This academic camp exposed students to a variety of design disciplines, design methodology and creativity through the process of researching and redesigning a corporate identity program for a local non-profit organization. Workshops, projects and presentations also helped students to define design as an education and career path.

Design: Think. Know. Do., June 2010This year’s design camp involved using professional design researchand development techniques to redesign how ideas of sustainability can be applied to a community’s interactions, its economics and its physical environment. Student teams used a variety of design methodologies and skills to find answers to how design can improve the experience of a recycling plan on campus. The final project goals should increase recycling participation by students, teachers and staff; heighten awareness of the community’s recycling program; expand economic opportunities while addressing environmental issues in a positive way; and lower waste generated on-campus by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Design: Think. Know. Do., June 2011This academic camp exposed students to a variety of design disciplines, design methodology and creativity through the process of researching and drawing. The Drawing Intensive (morning sessions) reconnected and enhanced students’ relationship to the natural world and surrounding

environment by developing visual skills and critical thinking through careful observation and classical drawing techniques. The Design sessions (afternoon) taught students about the design process, the importance of creativity and play, and basic composition skills to solve a community-based response to sustainability and community.

CUM LAUDE GRADUATE

I graduated cum laude from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in August, 1973. Due to my academic achievement I was allowed to take my teaching methods courses prior to other preliminary courses. This enabled me to begin teaching full time on a temporary certificate during my Junior year of college. After graduation from OSU I pursued additional course work to obtain my Visual Art certification. In 1987 I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Master’s degree in Education. My cognate area was Gifted and Talented Education and I maintained a 3.9 GPA during my graduate studies. I have completed additional graduate level courses at Wright State University, Miami University (Ohio), the University of Findlay and Arrowmont, a visual arts branch campus of the University of Tennessee.

I participated in the 1992 Getty Partnership for the Visual Arts Summer Institute at OSU in Columbus. At present I hold a Permanent Teaching Certificate from the State of Ohio and have approximately 40 hours of post graduate work beyond my Masters Degree. I retired from Bath Schools in June of 2004 with 30 years experience in education.

I taught an Art Education methods course at the college level for Ohio State on the Lima campus from 2002-2006. I am currently in my eighth year as an instructor with Ohio Northern University and have taught the introductory course for Education majors, Culture and Schooling (EDUC 115), Integrated Art Methods (EDUC 457), Integrating Art and Academics (EDUC 390), Visual Arts in Early Childhood Education (ECED 335), Introduction to Early Childhood Education (EDUC 240), Early Childhood Methods and Instruction (EDUC 241 and 242), Early Childhood Educational Psychology (ECED 2671), Diversity Assessment/Five Day Field Experience (EDUC 150) and Classroom Guidance in Early Childhood Education ((ECED 325). I have utilized WebCT and its many features in my courses. I typically supervise two to nine student teachers per quarter as well as any required field experience done by students in my classes. I serve as an advisor to approximately fifteen Middle Childhood Education majors.

My duties the past four years as Assistant to the Director of the Center for Teacher Education also have entailed a variety of NCATE responsibilities. I have worked closely with the director on program review, to file program updates and to develop assessments necessary to collect data for future NCATE visits. I have been a member of the Getty College of Arts and Sciences Assessment Committee, the Education Department’s Partnership Committee, chair of the Middle Childhood Committee for two years and served as the department representative to the state’s Teacher Quality Partnership. For the past four years I have coordinated a Saturday morning enrichment program (Project SMArts) which provides fine arts education to community children

Page 31: webstu.onu.edu · Web viewStrathmore’s Who’s Who Among Business Leaders, 1996, 1999 Gallery, International Association of Printing House Craftsmen Competition Gold, Silver and

with ONU teacher candidates serving as instructors. I have aligned our unit assessments with department goals in order to collect data electronically through LiveText and for the past fiveyears have written the University’s Early Childhood and Middle Childhood Assessment Reports as well as the annual report for NCATE for the past four years.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Birth date: July 26, 1950

Having lived in and around the Lima area my entire life, I have been involved in a variety of organizations and community activities. We have a daughter, Sarah, living in Columbus and another daughter, Mandy, at home. During summers, traveling with our family has always been a priority and we have enjoyed many trips throughout the continental United States, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. My husband and I have always valued the importance of experiencing a variety of cultures and lands. We recently completed our fourth trip to Europe which provided an opportunity to see the art treasures of Florence, Venice, Rome and in particular Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Travels to the Louvre, Monet’s Gardens at Giverny and many of the world’s major museums have enriched my life and my teaching. We have traveled to Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as spent eighteen days touring China. We spent a week in Amsterdam where we frequented the Riksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, The Marshuitis in The Hague, Rembrandt’s studio and the home of painter, Vermeer, in Delft. We traveled to Macchu Pichu in Peru and spent an additional week in the Andes, learning about the Incan, Andean and Spanish Catholic cultures. Most recently we traveled to the Australian outback

to observe and learn about the Aborigini culture and art. Additionally we visited New Zealand and experienced the Maori culture and rituals.

My husband of 42 years, Lonnie , has his Masters in Education, Counseling and Administration. He has worked as teacher, principal and guidance counselor and is currently employed as a curriculum coordinator by the Allen County Educational Service Center. We recently moved to a new home in the Bath School District after living in a rural area east of Lima for the past thirty years.

Grant Proposals

Main objectives: To help children understand the pleasures of learning and the positive impact knowledge can have on their future.

My research on the status of the black male resulted in writing a grant proposal in 1995 entitled "A Summer Adventure." It was funded by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation for the sum of $7,175. Twenty eight inner city boys between the ages of 8 - 13 participated in the

1996 adventure. The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation has funded the same program for the following summers: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000,

2001. I truly appreciate their monetary support; for without their assistance, there would be no adventures. "A Summer Adventure" was recognized in the 1997, 1998,1999 and 2000 Directory of

Opportunities for Minority Pre-College Students.

Summer Adventure 2000 Highlights: Once again, The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation enabled Dr. Patricia Freeman and Dr. Carl Hoagstrom to work with seventy-three boys and girls from 8 to 13 years old. There were trips to the Columbus Zoo to study animal ecology,

and three trips each to Ohio Caverns, Birch Bark Canoe Livery and

Marmon Valley Farm.

Summer Adventure 2001 Highlights: Eighty-six boys and girls from 9 to 13 years old participated in Summer Adventure 2001. Two tripswere made to a Wilderness Center in northeastern Ohio. While hiking, the students studied bird calls, tree identification, and glaciers (land relief). The highlight of the trip was cliff climbing at the beautiful waterfall. Two trips were made to the Ohio

Caverns, Birch Bark Canoe Livery, and Marmon Valley Farm for horseback riding. A great big THANK YOU is sent to The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation for a great summer!

Summer Adventure 2002

July was a busy month for sixty-four area children. If the repeaters are counted, there were 102 children who participated in several nature/ science based adventures sponsored by The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and Ohio Northern University. The adventures were bird banding at Springville Marsh, visiting and comparing Zane Shawnee Caverns and the Ohio Caverns, canoeing at Birch Bark Canoe Livery, and horseback riding at Marmon Valley Farm.

Students who participated in the adventures may receive tutoring in academic subjects during the 2002-2003 school year.

Summer Adventure 2003

July was a busy month for 89 area middle-school age children who participated in several nature based adventures sponsored by The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and Ohio Northern University. If the repeaters are counted, there were 117 participants.

The adventures included bird banding at Springville Wildlife Nature Preserve; visiting Back to the Wild, a rehabilitation center for injured wildlife; touring the Ohio Caverns; canoeing at Birch Bark Canoe Livery; and horseback riding at Marmon Valley Farm.

The "Summer Adventure" program is in its eighth year. The main objective was to bring together youth of all ethnicities in Lima and the surrounding areas to study nature through observation, hands-on activities, and assigned readings. It is directed by Dr. Patricia Freeman and Dr. Carl Hoagstrom.

Page 39: webstu.onu.edu · Web viewStrathmore’s Who’s Who Among Business Leaders, 1996, 1999 Gallery, International Association of Printing House Craftsmen Competition Gold, Silver and

Students who participated in the adventures may receive tutoring in academic subjects during the 2003-2004 school year.

For information, please call Dr. Patricia Freeman at Ohio Northern University.

Summer Adventure 2004

Eighty-eight middle school youth from the Lima area participated in several nature/science based adventures sponsored by The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and Ohio Northern University. Participants had an opportunity to ride horses at Marmon Valley Farm; observe bird banding at Springville Marsh; visit Back to the Wild, a wildlife preserve; tour the Ohio Caverns; and canoe at Birchbark Canoe Livery.

The program. which is in its ninth year, enables middle school youth to study and learn about nature and science in a natural setting through hands-on experiences.

Students who participated in the adventures may receive free tutoring in academic subjects during the 2004- 2005 school year. Ohio Northern University pre-service teachers will serve as tutors. For information, please call Dr. Patricia Freeman at Ohio Northern University
