Valley resident and host of the long-running and popular game show “Jeopardy” Alex Trebek has penned his memoir. The Answer Is..., released this past Tuesday, discusses Trebek’s battle with pancreatic cancer, his experimental immunotherapy, his good results but also his announcement to his wife that if it didn’t work he would stop treatment. In an interview on “Good Morning America” Trebek said his cancer indicator numbers are dropping but he had a day where he “felts like I want to die” because he felt he was a burden to his wife. He also said he has no intention of stepping down from hosting “Jeopardy!,” saying it never crossed his mind. The 80-year old has been hosting the game show since 1984. He will donate all the proceeds from his

The oirginal swimsuit issue debuted in 1964 and has featured such models as Kathy Ireland, Christie Brinkley, Elle Macpherson and Kate Upton.

“The great thing about Sports Illustrated is they just keep reinventing themselves and they keep reinventing what is your

view of beauty,” she said. “And they keep showing people that there’s more than one kind of beauty out there.

The current issue, which publishes Tuesday, also features Olivia Culpo, Jasmine Sanders and Kate Bock, who each have individual covers.

It’s time for some SOBERING REALITY!

It really does not matter if you like or dislike President Trump or former Vice-President Joe Biden. What really matters is what is happening across America, and in particular California and the City of Los Angeles.

Let me begin with the Judicial Branch of government as it impacts all people of the Golden State. I am addressing the criminal justice system. There are thousands of laws on the books dealing with criminal violations. Infractions, misdemeanor and felony crimes are the ones most know and hear about.

When someone commits an offense and is arrested, the process begins. It usually takes multiple arrests for any real punishment to be administered by a judge. Normally, there is probation and all sorts of programs available so the defendant can avoid jail. So, it takes the criminal justice system multiple times to finally impose a jail sentence on the accused. Now, the jail time will usually be in the county jail. For a felony crime, the incarnation will usually be in a state prison.

So, follow the process here. Multiple arrests of an individual until the person is sentenced to the state prison. Once admitted to a state prison, the life of crime and arrests usually become a pattern for the individual. Truly a sad situation for the person, their family and friends.

I know the real world of the criminal justice system since I have been engaged in law enforcement for over 50 years and speak from personal knowledge.

Now add that Governor Gavin Newson refuses to approve any executions of the over 700 persons on California’s death row. While this authority is granted to the Governor, we know

Rantz & Ravez from Dennis Zine that no matter how many murders the individual committed or how many children they molested that lands them in prison, they will remain in prison until they are pardoned, die or escape.

There are many others in the California state prison system for multiple felony arrests and convictions. These are the people that Governor Newsom has recently approved to be released before completing their full prison sentence.

The Governor has approved that 18,000 convicted felons

recently announced that he will begin issuing Concealed Weapon Permits (CCW) to some L. A. County residents. The Ventura County Sheriff already issues CCW permits to local residents for personal protection. I know there are people that live in fantasy land and are disconnected from reality. I am not pushing the NRA or any other group. I am only urging each of you to be prepared to protect yourself and your family when 18,000 FELONS are released from the state prisons into California neighborhoods. Are you living in one of the neighborhoods that will welcome those being released from prison ?

Consider how your elected political officials have ignored the homeless population in your neighborhood. Look around and you will find homeless everywhere. While you keep paying more and more taxes, the problem continues to get worse. Add 18,000 convicted felons to the mix that don’t have a job or funds to live. More homeless and more problems for your community with fewer police to answer your 911 calls.

Good luck to you. Like Mayor Garcetti says after his news briefs on Covid-19… “Peace and love L.A.”

serving time are to be released prior to serving the full term they were given upon conviction.

So, the STUPIDITY of Mayor Eric Garcetti, who called Police Officers “KILLERS”, combined with the INSANITY of the majority of the L. A. City Council who voted to reduce $150 million dollars from the LAPD budget means fewer dollars to provide public safety for all the people of Los Angeles. That means each of you and your family members! Wake up! Are you understanding the seriousness of what is going on with your safety and that of your loved ones!

Release 18,000 convicted felons from prison with no job or opportunity to get a job due to the economy and impact of Covid-19 and cut the budget for the LAPD that is charged with ‘“protecting and serving” the people of Los Angeles. IF THIS IS NOT INSANITY, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS!

I have mentioned in previous RantZ and RaveZ that you should have a gun in your home to protect yourself and your family. The Sheriff of Los Angeles County

Calabasas resident and YouTube star Jake Paul’s large house party in Calabasas was one motivating factor for the city’s stricter mask laws.

Video from the 23-year-

olds’ July 11 “influencer” party showed dozens of young adults partying and drinking without masks or social distancing.

The city’s new mask ordinance went into effect

Monday with a $100 fine per violation. The city will also work with the Sheriffs Department to shut down any gatherings that violate city of county health orders.

The Rouse family, owners of Trailer Life Publications,

hired renowned architect Jerrold Lomax to build this glass house to showcase their view of the valley.

The Arthur Rouse residence, right, was built in 1973 and is the

only example of Lomax’s work using Glu-lam beams. It also has

long, uninterrupted glass walls. It’s an excellent example of the

International/Modern style of architect and the Mid-Century

Modern period of design.

Robert Benson met Frank Gehry when he worked at Loyola Law School. Gehry was designing the school, which was his first major commission. Gehry had gained recognition in the late 70’s for his Deconstructivisnm style of architecture and for experimenting with cheap inexpensive industrial material. The design of the Robert Benson house, left, began in 1979 and was complete in 1984. It is the only example of Gehry’s work in Calabasas.

James Bozjian, left, stands next to two of the city’s historical landmarks, The Bird Path and the Park Moderne Fountain at its entrance. The Bird path is part of the original Park Modern housing development of 1927, organized along narrow streets named for birds. It was envisioned as an artist colony featuring footpaths, pools, fountains and a pump house. The existing Bird Path is the only remaining footprint from the development, dating back to 1929.It runs between Bluebird Drive and Blackbird Lane and has been deliberately left as open space.

The Park Moderne Fountain, seen in the photo at left on the right side, is the only remaining fountain from the Park Moderne development. Many of the features of Park Moderne were designed by prominent architects including Rudolph Schindler and Jock Peters.

The William C. Masson Residence was built during the “homesteading days” in the early 1900’s. At this time, settlers rushed to file claims to acquire 160 acres of land by way of the Homestead Act. WIlliam Masson

received a land patent in 1904 for his 160 acres. The house, located on Old Topanga

Canyon, was strategically placed on the only route to Santa Monica, where the 1910 Port of Los Angeles was built, beneficial as goods were transported through this road. It is the only remaining homestead in the city

and one of the few remaining in Southern California.

From the 1700’s Calabasas had close proximity to El Camino Real and later Highway 101. It didn’t have until after U.S. statehood was access to the Pacific Ocean, which came in the form of a stage-coach trail linking the two in 1965 with the building of Old Topanga Canyon. It linked the Valley and Santa Monica’s wharf in 1893. Many homesteaders built along Old Topanga Cayyon Road (see story above.)

The Calabasas Schoolhouse Bell, at left, also shown on our cover, once hung in the Calabasas School at 24454 Calabasas Road. The original school was a one-room Victorian building with a bell tower, built in the early 1890’s. Around 1925 the old building was replaced by a Spanish Colonial Revival building, a portion of which remains today. It ran as a school until 1950. The bell was dedicated to the Las Virgenes School District and now sits at AE Wright on Las Virgenes.

Councilman’s Town Hall Addresses Homeless Crisis

The notorious Winnekta underpass.

Councilman Bob Blumenfield hosted a Tele-phone Town Hall on Wednesday to address the ongoing issues of homelessness in the west valley. His guests on the forum were Ken Craft of Hope of the Valley and Heidi Marsden of the L.A. Homeless Services Authority(LASA).

The councilman opened the forum by saying, “Like you, I am beyond frustrated. It kills me to see people living on the street. It presents a health crisis to our neighborhoods with needles and filth.” He went on to say the solution was not as easy as passing a law, as much of the tools are not in the “city’s tool box.”

“Getting services to the west valley is an uphill battle all the way,” he said. “We are always put at the bottom oft the list because our numbers are low compared to other districts.”

Part of the frustration, according to Blumenfield, is that mental health services are all under county purview. Another is that almost 30% of homeless have escaped domestic violence.

To address those two things the city has partnered

with Providence Tarzana Cedars Sinai in their joint program with Tarzana Treatment Center that put a patient navigator in the ER to help move some homeless to offsite housing with the treatment center offering services.

He has also partnered with Haven Hills domestic violence shelter to help get some victims off the street into transitional housing.

The real answer, he said, was getting more tiny homes, group homes and pallet shelters in the west valley. A survey conducted during the town hall revealed that 58% of attendees would have some version of homeless housing in their neighborhood. 42% said they wouldn’t welcome them.

There are currently two “Project Room Key” motels one in Canoga Park and one in Reseda,

that are housing h o m e l e s s . Westfield has agreed in their new Promenade d e v e l o p m e n t to allocate 5% to affordable housing and 5% to workforce housing.

To that end Marsden said COVID 19 actually allowed LASA to respond more to the crisis, as it got resources

from federal and state funds. “We got more than 6,000 people indoors in a six-month period,” she said. “We now need to get them rehoused. Some elderly just needed another $100 to $200 to afford rent. At the other end of the spectrum were those needing mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Craft said it was a “public private partnership.” Ordinary citizens can help with the problem at their shelters by cooking and distributing their 2,000 meals a day. They can help with office work, or mentor kids with homework or do job training and life skills classes.

He agreed that there has to be more creative solutions to move people into permanent housing - like the pallet homes.

can be developed quickly. Nonetheless, the FDA has sometimes been faulted for moving too fast in the campaign to prevent and treat the virus. Under fire, the FDA mandated stricter reviews.

A virus vaccine may seek approval from the FDA in one of two ways, either full approval or emergency authorization. Full approval would require the vaccine company to amass trial data and submit all details to an advisory committee of outside experts. That process typically takes months. Although an emergency authorization could happen more quickly, it is still incumbent upon the vaccine maker to show through a clinical study that the vaccine produced lower levels of disease.

We are not near this choice finality. There are numerous projects underway and pharmaceutical companies are keenly aware of the need to protect people in the U.S. and countries the world over.

Los Angeles” lawsuit currently before U.S. Judge David Carter has the potential to bring shelter beds and enforce anti-camping laws. Blumenfield actually brought the judge to the Winnetka underpass and other “hot spots” in the west valley to show him the severity of the problem.

Through mediation the county has agreed to fund services for more than 6,000 new beds, spending $300 million over five years to build shelters in each council district.

“Though we lifted 207 out of homeless daily, which is 70 more than last year, more people are falling into homeless everyday. So we need eviction protection and job creation,” said Marsden.

To help break the cycle Blumenfield has opened his parking lot into a safe parking location, where users have to be registered and there is on-site security.
