Five Non-Negotiable Issues, continued...
We continue from last week’s article looking at five non-negotiables of Catholic Social teaching. Last week’s bulletin we discussed abortion. This week we are highlighting Euthana-sia. In the introduction to this article last week it was mentioned that these five issues concern actions that are intrinsically evil and must never be promoted by law. This is not to say that the person committing these actions is himself evil; but rather, the action itself is considered to be an inherently evil act. As a reminder: Intrinsically evil actions are those that funda-mentally conflict with the moral law and can never be per-formed under any circumstances. It is a serious sin to deliber-ately endorse or promote any of these actions, an no person who really wants to advance the common good will support any action contrary to the non-negotiable principles involved in these issues. 2. Euthanasia (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2276 ff.)
Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as normal as possible. Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of the handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable. Thus, an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judg-ment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded. Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dan-gerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected out-come can be legitimate; it is the refusal of “over-zealous” treat-ment. Here one does not will to cause death; one’s inability to impede it is merely accepted. The decisions should be made by the patient if he is competent and able or, if not, by those legal-ly entitled to act for the patient, whose reasonable will and le-gitimate interests must always be respected. Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted. The use of pain-killers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable. Palliative care is a special form of disinterested charity. As such it should be encouraged. We will continue this article in next week’s bulletin!
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Who are the Knights?
We are Catholic men building a bridge back to faith. There is much work to be done in this world. Good work. Necessary work. And that’s what the Knights do. Every day. Assisting the sick and disabled. Protecting those who can’t protect themselves. Whether they are next door or halfway around the world. This is the journey we are on. Our path. We do it to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors and Catholic. We invest our time, our effort, and our resources into our values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriot-ism. We come from many places. And backgrounds. And stages in our lives. But we are all of one faith. A fraternity of men striving to better our-selves and our world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another to live it. To put your values into action. That’s what we do at the Knights of Columbus. That’s who we are.
