Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,15 May 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their really big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7. This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

This week at the zoo it's a long weekend, and the Humfreys head north again, this time to Nymboida in NSW for a short break. But any sort of holiday for Chris always involves animals - and this time it's turtles in the river, frogs in the toilet, and snakes in the living room. Arriving back at the zoo, with foxes still lurking, Chris needs to check on some newly laid emu eggs. But nesting emus are highly protective and one well-aimed emu kick can kill. Chris comes up with the crazy idea of crawling up to the nest hidden under a box and discovers six beautiful blue eggs, that later hatch into little emu chicks.

Gypsy gives birth to seven dingo pups but tragedy awaits, as one little pup doesn't make it through the night. To keep their animal handling skills honed, Chris decides it's time for some staff training. The team head off up a local mountain, on a treasure hunt with a difference. They split into two teams, and the competition is fierce. Whoever finds the most animals, will win the inaugural Wild Action Cup.

The Great Rift: Africa’s Wild HeartSunday,15 May 2011 New Series

Visible from space, the Great Rift runs for thousands of miles. It creates, connects and defines the wildest, most charismatic landscape in the world. From the majestic, snow-capped mountains of the Kilimanjaro to the hustle and bustle of the Red Sea's coral reefs; the dry open savannahs of the Serengeti to the rain-soaked forests of the Mountains of the Moon, the Great Rift displays remarkable wildlife and awe-inspiring landscapes.

In episode one, Ethiopia's Afar Depression is an alien landscape of volcanoes, huge salt pans and fierce temperatures. In the neighbouring highlands, 30 million years of activity, with half a million cubic kilometres of lava have created a volatile landscape. Animals have developed amazing survival strategies to live here. Gelada baboons use their extraordinary agility to find safety on the vertiginously steep cliffs, while rare Ethiopian wolves, unlike any of their counterparts, live as solitary hunters. Underlying some of the volcanic lava slopes are mysterious caves filled with extraordinary creatures. Travel west and the valley changes from grassland to true African jungle, including the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon which, shrouded in mist, are the last refuge for the world's largest primate, the mountain gorilla.

After The Great Rift: Africa's Wild Heart stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes look in Inside The Great Rift. The team head down into the volcanic crater of Mount Suswa in Kenya where they hope to film a troop of very unusual baboons. This particular troop have taken to sleeping inside a cave rather than on the forest floor and this behaviour has never been filmed before. But exactly how do you sneak into a cave containing 100 sleeping baboons?

Moby DickSunday,15 May 2011 Final

Starbuck (Ethan Hawke) fears the blind vindictiveness of Ahab (William Hurt), whose madness and manipulative tactics can mean death for the seamen. On the long and arduous journey across the Atlantic, which takes the Pequod around the Cape of Good Hope and to the South China Sea, the crew members are subjected to hunger and thirst, to the terrifying stillness of the doldrums and to naked fear. Yet Ahab unswervingly pursues his goal: the hunt for Moby Dick.

The harpooners of the Pequod have killed one of the white whale's companions and the seamen have an idea of the anger and power of their enemy. Yet their first encounter with Moby Dick is only a taste of the apocalyptic struggle between man and animal that is about to take place on the high seas, and in which not only Ahab and the white whale will meet their fates...

When Angry Boys continues tonight, another new character from Chris Lilley is revealed - S.mouse. S.mouse, the U.S. rap artist who became an overnight sensation with his child-friendly single 'Slap My Elbow' has found himself under house-arrest and under pressure from the record company over his self-penned YouTube released 'Poo On You'.

That very same song encouraged Nathan, half a world away, to make a tribute video that in turn has angered the local Dunt police. The authorities have been called and it seems Nathan is being sent away from the family to a deaf school in Adelaide. A new inmate arrives at Garingal. Gran takes Talib, the 'dog wanker', under her wing.

Outback KidsThursday,19 May 2011 New Series

This powerful three-part documentary series follows the work of the Brahminy Group, lead by Allan Brahminy, as they attempt to rehabilitate seven profoundly troubled young Aussie kids.

The Brahminy Group treat a wide variety of kids at their facility deep in isolated bush in the Northern Territory. It's a place of last-resort for chronic drug-abusers, juvenile offenders, petrol-sniffers, gang members, child prostitutes and the emotionally traumatised.

Aged between 12 and 16, the kids are a mixture of boys and girls, black and white, rich and poor; some are funded privately others by state government welfare departments. But what unites these kids is the severity of their problems: they are at the end of the line and this place, far from the toxic temptations and traumas of their usual lives, represents the kids' last chance of salvation. The Group takes its name from its founder, Allan Brahminy. Abandoned at birth, Allan was adopted by an Aboriginal family, with whom he is now reunited, having been taking into foster care aged seven. In the first episode, we meet Allan Brahminy, as he tries to push 15-year-old Zach to deal with his anger issues. Staff spend days locating local lad, Lee, but there's immediate friction between him and staff member, Roscoe. 16-year-old Tim is desperate to get out and 13-year-old Derryan goes head-to-head with staff member, Sam. As Bronte, the first female client arrives, the episode concludes with Roscoe assaulting Lee.

Thorne: SleepyheadFriday,20 May 2011

Tom Thorne (David Morrissey) is dragged back into the nightmares of his past, as he heads up the investigation into a series of horrifying attacks on young women by a killer as sadistic as he is terrifying.

Based on the best selling crime novels by author Mark Billingham - Thorne is a UK detective investigating a series of bizarre murders, whilst an old case seems to be playing on his mind. Could it be that this old case has a connection to the present day murders in a terrifyingly personal way for Tom Thorne?

As the investigation progresses, it becomes clear the killer's intention is not to kill but to put the victims in a locked-in state. The similarities between the victims and the old case surrounding the death of a man named Frank Calvert (Brian McCardie) have tensions rising within the team.

At the same time, Thorne forms a bond with Alison 'the locked-in victim' (Sara Lloyd Gregory) and tries to get her to communicate which in turn leads to a relationship with her doctor, Ann Coburn (Natascha McElhone). It becomes a race against time to figure out who is responsible for the killings once their witness is brutally murdered and Anne's daughter is kidnapped. Night, night, Sleepyhead...

Jennifer Byrne Presents: The Future Of The BookJennifer Byrne Presents is a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing. A panel of leading authors and expert celebrity guests join Jennifer for investigations into some of the most popular reading genres, they reveal the conventions, controversies, and titles that have helped shaped the literary landscape.

This week Jennifer and her guests discuss something very close to their hearts, not a genre, not a title, but the thing itself -- the old-fashioned book.

How we read it. How long we'll keep on reading it. And will it be our choice. Already, as Amazon told us last year, eBooks are outselling the paper version…. but that's just the beginning of the story. At least they're books. What about the truly horrible thought that the long-form book itself - with a beginning and an end, and some hours of concentration required in the middle - is in serious trouble. That our quick-twitch, highly-wired, text-twitter-ping-you have-mail culture is changing our tastes - and perhaps our brains - so that books will simply cease to be read. Or only, as Philip Roth has put it, by a cult minority. About as many as now read Latin poetry. And that's unlikely to keep the book world turning.

Now it's a new area - things are changing very quickly - so Jennifer asked her three guests not for rock-hard predictions, but for their informed take on the future of books and reading. Our three guests discussing the future of the book are: Richard Watson, Kate Eltham and Richard Flanagan.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors is keeping you safe and sound with an OH&S special. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, futurist and author Mark Pesce, and guest judge, OH&S consultant Hamish Murray.

Inventions featured on the program:

IC SAFETY SYSTEM - by inventor Andreas Mehringer from QLD

Over half of Australians use some form of vision correction, and nearly everyone will require vision correction at some time during their life. A lot of jobs, as well as hobbies like sports, involve hazards to the eyes where permanent damage or the loss of an eye can result. Sixty per cent of all eye injuries happen at work and most can be prevented. Safety glasses have been around for some time, but when combined with prescription glasses they are often uncomfortable and not effective.

The IC Safety System consists of two parts. The first is a bendable prescription lens insert, or 'foils', and the second is specially designed matching frames and glasses made to fit these foils. The foils clip into the frames and are easily removable. If the glass is scratched then the prescription foil is removed and simply clipped into another frame. This enables the worker to be back on the job very quickly instead of waiting for delivery of a new set of prescription safety glasses. The IC Safety System cuts the overall price of a pair of prescription safety glasses in half.

FLYAN CHAIR - by inventors Bryan and Ed Flemming from QLD

Bryan Flemming was a motocross rider for 32 years before an accident in 2009 when he broke his neck and became a quadriplegic. But Bryan didn't want to be held back just because he was in a wheelchair. He searched the internet for an all-terrain chair that would be light enough to lift into his car. When he couldn't find anything he teamed up with his brother Ed, a qualified electrician who works as a cameraman, visual technician and editor at the University of Southern Queensland, to design something better.

The Flyan Chair is a 4-wheel drive light weight power chair for on and off road uses. It allows the user to take the power chair in a car without the need for a costly van. Bryan and Ed have chosen not to patent their invention, hoping that someone with the knowledge and ability to manufacture the chair will make it available for the masses.

IC POLE – by inventor Duncan Hellmers from NSW

IV Poles can carry multiple bags and fluid pumps at any one time, yet despite their importance they are often unstable and can easily be pushed off balance.

The IC Pole is a new design of IV poles that is significantly safer. The invention features extra hooks, specially designed to avoid catching, as well as shielded wheels and a rotating base, greatly increasing manoeuvrability whilst reducing the risk of trips and tangled cords.

Faster Computing Recently IT researchers have questioned how long Moore's Law can stand true. They say that without the development of new technologies, like light or quantum computers, computing speeds cannot continue to double every two years. But, Dr Stuart Parkin, an experimental physicist at IBM in San Jose, California, shows Graham Phillips his solid state chips that are approximately a million times faster than disc drives - using conventional electronics!

Saving Acid WetlandsWhen Mark Horstman lived in Far North Queensland he was part of a campaign to restore a dilapidated mangrove system right on the doorstep of Cairns. The project became a globally unique experiment and Mark returned to the locale to see what difference the locals’ initiative has made.

Lashi Bandera - a maths tragicLashi Bandera is a PhD student and Fulbright Scholar studying to become a pure mathematician specialising in the field of harmonic analysis. A blackboard and piece of chalk are never far from his reach. Catalyst asks why he's so turned on by equations.

Caterpillar ProcessionThe larval stage of the bag shelter moth is a woolly caterpillar and its hirsute appearance plays a role in its unusual behaviour. When they emerge to feed, they form a procession, creeping along nose to tail in a caterpillar conga line. Researchers at La Trobe University managed to get to the bottom of this hairy caravan.

I, Spry: The Rise And Fall Of A Master SpyProduced by the makers of the documentaries The Prime Minister is Missing and Who Killed Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler?, I, Spry is the story of Charles Spry, ASIO’s first master spy.

With a nuclear arms race set to escalate the Cold War, Prime Minister Menzies appoints Colonel Charles Spry to take charge of the fledgling Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, ASIO. The staunchly anti-Communist, fifth-generation soldier recruits new officers to fight a covert war against a cunning enemy. Their primary task is to investigate Australians spying for the Soviets and infiltrate Communist Party branches with undercover agents.

The sensational 1954 defections of Soviet Embassy officials, Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, deliver Spry a great intelligence victory. But when a former ASIO officer appears in surveillance photographs and major counter-espionage cases begin to fail, Spry soon finds himself in a place spies call the ‘wilderness of mirrors’. Security threats appear to be everywhere – from the highest office in the land to within ASIO itself.

Based on newly declassified information, including Spry’s secret testimony at the 1974 Royal Commission into Intelligence and Security, I, Spry features ASIO surveillance footage and candid interviews with former intelligence officers. It delivers a fresh, critical eye to the spy agency’s early history, from its first fumbling counter-espionage operations to its evolution beyond government scrutiny and infiltration by the KGB.

From Spry’s brazen attempt to influence the 1958 federal election to his controversial investigation into Liberal Prime Minister John Gorton, Spry emerges as an enigmatic master spy who ultimately subverts the very democracy he is charged with protecting.
