This year we have seen our student learning, performance and achievement data shift with leaps and bounds. Overall we have results which show more students above the expected level, more students at the level and fewer students below the expected level. In all of our testing and assessment, we have higher numbers of students at or above the expected level from January through to December this year. This is remarkable and I am very proud of the efforts of every student and teacher and staff member along with the encouragement and support of every parent and carer. This growth, progress and improvement is largely because of three things: Things your children, our students, have done: In our classes each lesson our students and teachers are following our common model of instruction called IMPACT which is filled with high yield strategies: students have a learning goal for that lesson, then a hook (like the use of visuals, short clips) often connecting to their prior knowledge, followed by adding new understandings and or skills through saying, doing, making, reading, writing, creating, identifying similarities and differences, exploring, discovering (often with web-based applications), solving, questioning. 2016…a year for all of us to be proud of our students! Students then are supported with challenge, cultivating their understanding through practice, application, evaluating and analysing and to

conclude we have a short time for review and feedback to support the next steps in students’ learning. Students’ doing these things in every class

increases their depth of understanding and learning. Alongside this framework, students persist and their level of effort has increased. Think of all of the hours of work your children have done in 2016, their persistence, their level of focus and we can be proud of each and every child for their focus and effort this year.Things teachers and support staff have done: think about all of the learning goals teachers have created and then designed IMPACT lessons and practice activities and things for your children to do to help them achieve their learning goals. Our teachers and ES staff have supported your child’s learning through their positive comments and feedback and they have learned a lot professionally this year. Out staff work in teams each week to look at student performance data and then design the learning for next set of lessons. Thank you to all of our teachers. We are proud of their efforts. And thirdly the things you, our parents, have done to support the development of your children: the reassuring, the help with homework, the encouragement. The getting your children to school each day even when they may not feel like coming to school. The buying of their books and materials to have your children ready for learning and the laundering of uniforms that show we all belong to Laverton P-12 College.

ARTS AND INDUSTRIES FESTIVAL, SEAWORKSOn the 25th November, some of the year 6’s went to Seaworks in Williamstown and put on a shadow puppet show along with another school.

The puppet show was about 4 local industries and how they work. There were fireworks, acrobats, cars crashing and other fun activities at the festival. Aaron, Eh Ler Saw, Eh Moo and myself performed ‘Mobil and Qenos’. Bhishma and Rebecca did one about the ‘Truganina Explosives Reserve’ and Hanin, Wadad, Marcus, Meeyah and Cheyanne performed ‘Altona Water Treatment Plant’. It was a fun night.By Mark Greenwood.

Last Friday there was a festival happening at Seaworks in Williamstown. The grade 6’s were also participating in the show by making shadow puppets to show how 4 local industries work. Wadad Elmir, Bhishma Patel, Eh Moo Moo, Eh Ler Saw Htoo, Hanin Dannaoui, Mark Greenwood, Marcus Eggert, Rebecca Venema, Cheyanne Durieu, Aaron Lay and Meeyah Hemi did a fantastic job at their shadow puppets performance. I would like to say a big thank you to Emma who helped us with the performance. The night was spectacular, there were fireworks and everyone went crazy. There was also acrobatics and their tricks were amazing. There were cars crashing, singing, how to make rope and a lady who owned a truck and had all her memories in the truck. Also there was a museum about War and Immigration, and there were people painting signs by hand.To sum this all up all I’m trying to say is that it was a night that I will never forget.By Wadad Elmir.

YEAR 9 CITY EXPERIENCEOn Thursday 24th November all Year 9 students were involved in the City Experience. The day prior to the excursion, students were given their

own map and instructions on navigating their way around the city, working out which trams to use and identifying important city landmarks. On the day, students worked in small groups of 3-5 completing their workbooks by answering questions and finding important facts, figures and landmarks of the designated places they needed to visit. The first stop was to meet at Federation Square where they were given their workbooks. Their first task was to take in the scenery of the city skyline and answer questions about places at Federation Square before moving onto their other locations of the Bourke Street Mall and the Queen Victoria Market before making their way to Docklands. We then all enjoyed a wonderful ‘flight’ on the Melbourne Star (Wheel) taking in further views of Melbourne before making our way back to Southern Cross Station for the train ride together back to Laverton.Thankyou to Ms Di Mieri, Ms Spiteri (Joy), Ms Palumbo, Ms Sandhu, Ms Ludgrove, Ms Palazzolo, Mr Daborn, Mr Gallagher and Linda for attending the excursion and making it such a fantastic day. We hope that this experience continues for years to come!

RELAXATION TRAINING: PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATIONFind out about progressive muscle relaxation and why it is an important way of reducing stress and anxiety. Learn the steps involved in progressive muscle relaxation and get tips on what to do if you’re not getting the hang of it.

Why progressive muscle relaxation is usefulWhen people are stressed out, anxious or have an anxiety disorder, they often have really tense or tight muscles. This means that you can actually reduce the stress and anxiety you feel, if you learn to relax your muscles properly. Progressive muscle relaxation can help you with this – it’s one of the most common types of relaxation training, and it’s used by a lot of people. It involves tensing and relaxing different groups of muscles through your body. How to do it

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Page 4: €¦ · Web viewIt involves tensing and relaxing different groups of muscles through your body. How to do it Progressive muscle relaxation works best if it’s something that you

Progressive muscle relaxation works best if it’s something that you practice daily for at least eight weeks, as it does take time for your body to get used to it (just like if you were trying a new sport or exercising).Preparation Make sure before trying out progressive muscle relaxation training, that you do these things:› Find a comfortable quiet space. Make sure you’re in a place free of distractions. Switch off   your  phone,  go   into  a  quiet   room,  and avoid being around other people if you think they’re likely to be a distraction.› Make sure you’re comfortable. Wear comfy clothes,   take   off   your   shoes,   and   if   you’ve eaten recently, give your food some time to digest.› Sit on a chair in a comfortable position. You can  also   lie  down   if   you  prefer,  but   you’re more likely to fall asleep. The relaxation›  When   you’re   prepared   and   ready,   focus your mind on your right foot (you can start with your left side if you’re a leftie and it feels more normal).› Breathe in, and tense your foot muscles as hard as you can.› Count to ten, with your muscles still tense.›   Suddenly   and   quickly   release   your   foot muscles so that they’re completely relaxed. › Count to twenty.Now, repeat the process from the start and do it again, using the same foot. You should notice more sensations the second time. When you’ve tensed and relaxed the same muscle twice, it’s time to move on to another group of muscles.Do exactly the same thing – tense muscles for ten seconds, relax for twenty, repeat. The idea is to relax and tense all the muscles in your body, starting with your feet and working your way up.Recommended order of muscle tensing› Right foot› Right lower leg and foot› Entire right leg› Left foot› Left lower leg and foot› Entire left leg› Right hand› Right forearm and hand› Entire right arm› Left hand› Left forearm and hand› Entire left arm› Abdomen (tummy)

› Chest› Neck and shoulders› FaceDon’t forget, if you’re a leftie, you can start with your left side if it feels more comfortable. When you’ve completed this process, your muscles should be much more relaxed. The more you practice it, the more relaxed your muscles will be able to become over time:Finishing a sessionWhen you’ve finished your last tensing pattern,› Relax with your eyes closed› Count slowly backwards from 5 to 1.› Get up slowly. If you get up too quickly the drop in blood pressure could cause you to fall down again or feel dizzy.If you’re having troubleProgressive muscle relaxation training can be really hard, particularly at first. People have trouble staying focused. The main thing to remember is that the more you practice, the easier it will become. It can be really frustrating to get over the initial hurdle, but don’t be discouraged. You may also find it easier if you have someone to call out the steps to you, so that you don’t have to remember in your head which muscle group to move to next. Try and find a video or audio track which uses progressive muscle relaxation techniques if you think it might help.References and further information: www.reachout.com.au
