d. This is practice using the Enter/Return key. Very Important: Keep your right pointer finger lightly touching the J key when lifting the other fingers up just enough to press the Enter/Return key with your little finger!

e. At the end of the Home Row practice, click on the Start Typing button.

Step Six—If you already know how to type, take the Course Entry timing to check your speed and accuracy in wpm (words per minute). If you are just beginning to learn how to type, go to Step Seven.

a. You might need to scroll up to see it—Make sure the scroll bar is up at the top. Click with your mouse anywhere in the Course Entry icon (box) to begin.

b. When you start typing, if you happen to look down to see what you are typing you might notice that instead of seeing what you are typing you see the words “TIMING IN PROGRESS”. This is to help you keep your eyes on the copy and NOT look down at your fingers or the keyboard letters! WHEN YOU FINISH THE TIMING, WHAT YOU TYPED WILL SHOW!

c. Here is another feature to help you learn to keep your eyes on the copy and keep going at a steady pace. Your teacher may have set up a 2-second Timeout—if you stop for 2 seconds your practice timing will stop and you will have to start over. Click on the ‘x’ to start over. You can take any practice timing over and over as many times as you want to—an unlimited number of practices until you reach your goal. IF YOU WANT TO KEEP RETAKING IT, DOUBLE CLICK (CLICK TWICE FAST) ON THE TIME BUTTON.

Step Seven—To begin your regular lessons, click on Lessons in the Menu bar.

a. In Lesson: 01, click anywhere in the first orange 01 icon.

b. Before you begin, would you like to have your letters larger and easier to see?

They might look like this example:

You can increase the size of the font (letters) by clicking on the “TT” and moving the blue circle to the right:

WOULD YOU LIKE TO ENLARGE YOUR TOTAL KEYBOARDING WINDOW!

To enlarge your window (so you can read the top words easier), hold down the Ctrl key while you depress the + key a few times. If you enlarged it too much and want to make it smaller, hold down the Ctrl key while you depress the - key.

c. Because you were clicking around with the mouse (to make your letters larger), you will probably need to click in the rectangle under your letters to place the cursor there. With your fingers on the Home Row (ASDF JKL:) as shown in the picture below, key in the letters. Use your thumb for the Spacebar—use the same thumb always. (If you are right-handed, you will always want to use the right thumb.) Under Timing Requirements, notice what your goal is that the teacher set. Your timing will start when you depress the first key! At the end of the line (kkk), after the last letter—do not space, just depress the Enter/Return key—begin again and keep going for the full 15 Seconds! During a practice timing, if you feel you made too many mistakes and want to stop the timer and start over, just wait a few seconds and the “Don’t Stop Typing!” message will appear. Click on the “x” to close the message and begin again! CONTINUE READING BUT BEGIN PRACTICING IN STEP TEN .

Step Nine—As you type, you will see the letters TIMING IN PROGRESS in the rectangle below your copy. This is to help you keep your eyes on the text you are copying and not your fingers or the keyboard. Good typists learn to type fast and accurately by learning the key pattern—the same fingers always depress the same keys.

You can take an unlimited number of practice timings. Your BEST THREE scores will show here:Check to see your cursor is showing here

before entering your letters!

Another item to help you learn to keep your eyes on the copy, and keep going at a steady pace, is that your teacher may have set up a 2-second Timeout—if you stop for 2 seconds your practice timing will stop and you will have to start over. Click on the ‘x’ to start over.

Step Ten— GO AHEAD AND TRY IT AFTER READING THE SECOND PARAGRAPH OF THIS SECTION! Your timing will begin when you depress the first key! If your timing doesn’t record, it either didn’t meet the minimum wpm or had too many errors. In the dialog box that comes up, click on the TRY AGAIN button, and depress the Reset Timer button (or Time button if you have a small monitor). If you get a timing that records in the Best Scores (bottom right) but you want to take it again to improve your score, double click (click twice real fast) on the Reset Timer/Time button.

THE FIRST EXERCISES AND LESSONS ARE VERY EASY TO HELP YOUR FINGERS AND MIND LEARN TO TYPE FASTER WITH SPEED AND ACCURACY. CONTINUE PRACTICING ALL FOUR TIMED EXERCISES OF LESSON 01 UNTIL YOU REACH YOUR GOAL (SET BY YOUR TEACHER) UNDER TIMING REQUIREMENTS. TRY IT NOW!!!!

Step Eleven—See your best scores record! Click on Reports in the Menu bar.

Click on Progress Report:

Your Progress Report will show all your best scores for each exercise in the lessons. When you complete all 4 timed exercises in Lesson 01, it will show your Lesson Average in GREEN. If you want to improve a score, Right Click on that score and it will automatically take you to that exercise. Practice it again. If you increase your score, it will replace the old one. If you do less than your recorded score, it does nothing.

Step Twelve—You can check your Current Grade for all completed lessons and your Final Grade when you have completed all assigned lessons. Click on Reports in the Menu bar and click on Grade Report.

Look at the Grade Report on the next page. We see that “Lessons Completed” shows “1” lesson, the Lesson Average is “41 WPM (Words Per Minute), and your Current Standing is an “A” for the grade so far in the course. If your grade should ever be lower than you prefer, go back to your Progress Report and raise some of your scores by doing them again! (Right click on the low score and it will take you to the right exercise.) Your new timing score will record only if it is higher than the recorded score. Higher scores on your Progress Report usually translate into a higher grade.

NOTICE ON YOUR GRADE REPORT, THAT UNDER THE COLUMN LABELED “Weight %”, IT SHOWS THE PERCENT THAT EACH OF THE LESSONS ARE OF YOUR FINAL GRADE.

Lessons 1-23 50% of your gradeLessons 48-59 25% of your gradeLessons 60-64 25% of your grade

THE LESSONS UNDERLINED IN BLUE ARE THE LESSONS ASSIGNED FOR YOU TO DO.

Step Thirteen—this next section is for 5 th and 6 th graders that could have some longer paragraph timings.

a. Here is an example of a paragraph timing where you can’t see the whole timing. It needs to be made longer so you don’t have to stop and scroll. The first thing you need to do is drag the bottom margin down until you can view the entire timing. Place your mouse over the dots on the bottom right of your timing until you see the double arrow. Press the left mouse button and hold it down as you drag it down to lower the bottom margin until you can see the entire timing.

Keyboarding for Kids Syllabus Revised 2020 14

If you have time, you can do these other unassigned lessons to improve your speed and accuracy, but they are not required for a grade.

Page 15: support.keyboardingonline.com  · Web viewGreetings Keyboarding for Kids Students: (Teacher: This syllabus is in Microsoft Word. Make changes in yellow areas) Supervisor/Teacher:

Next is what the timing will look like after dragging the bottom margin down.

b. Before you begin the timing, look at the next picture showing the entire timing--notice the red arrow. (If you have clicked somewhere else previously, the cursor may not show—like when dragging the bottom margin down.) If necessary, click to enter the cursor in the rectangle below the text.

The lines will automatically “word wrap” (go to the next line), so you don’t need to depress the Enter/Return key when you get to the end of a line in a paragraph. If you get to the bottom during the timing, start over and keep going. The blue arrows show the symbol to depress the Enter/Return key and begin a new paragraph. With your hands on the Home Row, depress the Tab key on your keyboard with your “A” finger to indent before typing the first word “Living”. (It is OK if your other fingers raise slightly while your little finger depresses the Tab key—be sure to keep your “F” finger on the “F” key!)

NOW IS THE TIME TO TRY IT!!! YOU CAN PRACTICE AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT TO IN ORDER TO GET A GOOD SCORE. GOOD LUCK!!!
