Greetings Keyboard Short Course Students: (This syllabus is in Microsoft Word. Teacher: Make changes especially in yellow areas)

Supervisor/Teacher: Enter name and email.

General Information—You signed up for a web-based keyboarding class: Follow the syllabus directions on your computer beginning with Step One for a personal demo of this course. This is a great course not only for beginners but also for the experienced typist who wants to improve speed and accuracy quickly. The best way to improve speed and accuracy is to go over the basics again at a higher rate of speed than the first time—let your fingers fly. You will never need to turn anything in as I can see all your scores in my Teacher Manager. Add information about your course standards: (examples shown below)

Grading Scale: A= 30+wpm, B= (Enter your class grading scale.) How many lessons to complete per week: (3 lessons per week for 6-week class) Beginning and end date for course completion: (Begins 8/25/xx & Ends 12/23/xx)

Step One—Watch the Short Correct Technique Video

To be an excellent typist, you need to have good techniques:

Open a browser in either Firefox or Google Chrome and add in the URL www.keyboardingonline.com. Rest your pointer on the SUPPORT link, and click on “Popular Videos”

Click on:

You may need to scroll to see it all. Put your cursor on the diamond and it will turn red. Click on it to begin the Technique Video. After it starts, it continues to the end automatically—you do not need to depress the mouse button. Be sure the audio is turned on.

b. Enter your Password given to you by your Instructor and press Enter/Return or click Sign in.

c. Click on the picture of your course. It will take you right to your data file. It shows on top the Class name and your Student name.

Step Three—Follow along on your computer as you read these step-by-step directions. They will give you a demo of your course. DON’T START TYPING UNTIL YOU SEE THE RED “YOU CAN BEGIN TYPING NOW” (it’s all explanation up to that point).

a. The Course Entry Timing is a good place to start. (You may have to scroll up to the top to see it all.) It shows you what your current skill is in keyboarding, and shows you why you need to learn the keys “by touch” (learned by memory--not by looking at your keyboard and using whatever fingers to press the keys).

Click on the diamond to begin.

b. The Course Entry Timing is a 2-minute timing. It usually doesn’t show all the timing at first, and you don’t want to have to stop and scroll down to see the rest of it. The first

thing you need to do is drag the bottom margin down until you can view the entire timing. Place your mouse over the dots on the bottom right of your timing until you see the double arrow. Press the left mouse button and hold it down as you drag it down to lower the bottom margin until you can see the entire timing.

This is what the entire 2-min. timing looks like. Before you begin the Course Entry timing, notice the red arrows. (If you have clicked somewhere else previously, the cursor may not show.) Click to enter the cursor in the rectangle below the text. The lines will automatically word wrap (go to the next line), so you don’t need to depress the Enter/Return key when you get to the end of a line. If you get to the bottom during the timing, start over and keep going. The blue arrows show the symbol to depress the Enter/Return key and begin a new paragraph. Depress the Tab key on your keyboard to indent before typing the first word “Make”. READ THE NEXT PART BEFORE BEGINNING.

When you start typing, if you happen to look down to see what you are typing, you might notice that instead of seeing what you are typing you see the words “TIMING IN PROGRESS”. To become an excellent typist, you have to learn the correct key pattern. To help you learn to keep your eyes on the copy, and keep going at a steady pace, your teacher may have set up a 2-second Timeout—if you pause for 2 seconds your practice timing will stop and you will have to start over. You will have longer paragraphs like this later in the course . When you pause for 2 seconds, this next picture is what you will see—click on the “x” to start over. Take the timing a few times. You are allowed 2 or less errors in order for it to record. (Check with your instructor to see if a Course Entry Timing score is required.)

TAKE THE COURSE ENTRY TIMING NOW SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH YOUR SCORE! THEN PROCEED TO STEP FOUR!

Step Four— You are now ready to begin practicing your lessons . The first 11 lessons are very easy for a reason. This is where you learn your speed and accuracy . Take them seriously and repeat each one until you reach your goal or higher— there is NO limit to the number of times you can repeat a practice timing and the higher the score the better!

If you have a small monitor: In the dark strip on top of your window, if necessary, click the Expand button to see the course options:

a. Click Lessons to begin.

b. Lesson 01 is Learning the Home Row. There are 10 timed exercises. Your highest scores on each exercise are shown so you can decide if you want to repeat the practice to obtain a higher score. You also know at a glance where you left off and where to begin your next practice. Click on the orange 01, or anywhere on that icon, to open your first 15-second practice exercise.

Before you begin, would you like to have your letters larger and easier to see?

They might look like this example:

You can increase the size of the font (letters) by clicking on the “TT” and moving the blue circle to the right:

Click on the “x” in the upper right corner to remove the Adjust Font icon. After adjusting the font size, this is what your letters could look like:

WOULD YOU LIKE TO ENLARGE YOUR TOTAL KEYBOARDING WINDOW!

To enlarge your window (so you can read the top words easier), hold down the Ctrl key while you depress the + key a few times. If you enlarged it too much and want to make it smaller, hold down the Ctrl key while you depress the - key. (See the next illustration.)

Because you were clicking around with the mouse (to make your letters larger), you will probably need to click in the rectangle under your letters to place the cursor there. With your fingers on the Home Row (ASDF JKL:) as shown below, key in the letters. Use your thumb for the Spacebar—use the same thumb always. (If you are right-handed, you will always want to use the right thumb.) Under Timing Requirements, notice what your goal is that the teacher set. Your timing will start when you depress the first key! At the end of the line (kkk), after the last letter—do not space, just depress the Enter/Return key—begin again and keep going for the full 15 Seconds! During a practice timing, if you feel you made too many mistakes and want to stop the timer and start over, just wait a few seconds and the “Don’t Stop Typing!” message will appear. Click on the “x” to close the message, and begin again. GO AHEAD AND TRY IT NOW! TAKE IT SEVERAL TIMES IF NECESSARY TO REACH YOUR GOAL.

Did you reach your goal? You can repeat the timed exercise as many times as you want to--UNLIMITED. If your timing wasn’t satisfactory and you want to repeat it:

If your score was less than the minimum, or you made too many errors, it won’t record and the drop-down box may ask you to TRY IT AGAIN.

Click on Progress Report. It will show all your best scores for each exercise. When you complete all 10 timing exercises in the lesson, it will show your Lesson Average in green. If you want to improve a score, Right Click on that score and take it again. If you score is higher, the new score will record. If it is not higher, the original score remains.

Step Six—You can check your Current Grade for all completed lessons and your Final Grade when you have completed all assigned lessons. Click on Reports in the menu bar and click on Grade Report.

(If you are a college/adult student and don’t have an Access Code yet, the Reports heading is covered up with the red Access Code Required box. Go back to the lessons and continue practicing. After entering the Access Code, you will be able to see the Reports.)

Your “Lessons Completed” shows “1” lesson so far. For the completed lesson with an Average of 50 wpm, your current grade so far is an “A”. If you want to improve your grade at any time, go back to your Progress Report and raise some of your scores! Your new timing score will record only if it is higher than the previously recorded score. Higher scores on your Progress Report usually translate into a higher grade!

CONTINUE PRACTICING IN THE CLASS ACCORDING TO YOUR SCHEDULE.
