TuesdayMaths: Operations continued.
Today we are looking at how to work with brackets and without brackets. Remember that the best way to get good at operations is plenty of practice!
With Brackets When you see a sum and it has brackets, you should start inside the bracket.
16
Example: 12 – (4 + 3) = _____Do the bracket first…… 4 + 3 = 7Now that we know the answer to the bit inside the bracket, we can rewrite the sum as 12 – 7 = ___The answer is 5.
Now complete Activity A belowTip: Remember to always complete inside the brackets first.
Without Brackets
17
Note: Remember that when a question has both addition and subtraction and there are no brackets, start at the left and work your way across.
For example: 7 – 1 + 2 = 6 + 2 = 8
Complete activity B below
Extra activity: Can you solve the 2 Cross Number Nets below? Check example before you try.
