Eagle Scout Samuel Alan Bitzer was born on September 7, 1997 in Hartford, Connecticut. Currently, he is a freshman at Merrimack College, majoring in Computer Science. When he is home from college, he lives in Simsbury with his father, Alan and mother, Roberta.

Sam first joined scouting as a Wolf Cub Scout at Latimer Lane Elementary School. He earned his Arrow of Light, the highest award for a Cub Scout, and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 174 in 2008. From his early days in Troop 174, Sam knew he wanted to be an Eagle Scout. While working towards this goal, he also wanted to participate in as many hiking and camping trips as possible.

Sam has always loved how Troop 174 encouraged its members to join in and be very active. Shortly after joining Troop 174, he was appointed Bugler although he was just in fifth grade and had been taking trumpet lessons for less than one year. He served in this capacity for more than five years and performed Taps at numerous important events in front of the whole troop and many people in the community. In addition to Bugler, Sam has also been the Troop Librarian, and an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. These three leadership positions taught Sam the importance of leading by example and about the responsibilities associated with these roles. As Troop Librarian, Sam designed a system to organize the books needed for Merit Badge University. He especially loved his time as an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader helping other scouts achieve rank advancement and complete the requirements needed in order to earn merit badges. He always had a deep sense of fulfillment after working with the troop cleaning up the grounds of the Simsbury United Methodist Church or distributing American Flags throughout town prior to the Memorial Day Parade. Sam is very grateful for the friendships he has made with scouts, parents and Scout Masters through his scouting experience.

The Kevin Hanley Award is given annually to two Scouts (one a first year Scout, the other an experienced Scout) who have most exemplified the Spirit of Scouting during the most recent Scouting year. This award is in memory of Kevin Hanley who as a first year Scout died of a rare childhood disease. Kevin was an exemplary Scout who made a lasting impression on those who knew him during the very short time he was with the troop. He personified the true meaning of Scout Spirit.

Sam attended Camp Workcoeman for a total of five years, and enjoyed his

adventures so much that he composed a theme song about the campsite that is still sung today. He also has many fond memories from participating in the annual bike trips to Block Island, as well as hiking and camping outdoors at Tuckerman’s Ravine, West Point and Purgatory Chasm.

In addition to his many years as an active Scout, Sam has participated in a variety of other activities. While at Simsbury High School, he became a member of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. During this time, he was also actively involved in the Honors Pep Band, Jazz Big Band, Band Leadership Team, Pit Orchestra and Spanish Club. He especially enjoyed the volunteer service he performed with Mrs. Abel and other band students at the Ovarian Cancer Walk and the McLean Home. Through St. Mary’s Church, he performed community outreach activities at Foodshare and the Immaculate Conception Shelter. At Merrimack College, Sam is a part of the Pep Band and Comedy Club. He recently participated in Mack Gives Back, a community service event performed with other students from his college. In addition to camping and hiking, Sam loves to ski. He credits Troop 174 with inspiring him at an early age to always be active and give back to the community.

For his Eagle Scout project, Sam led the design, construction and installation of four signs on the Cider Hill Road Trail at the 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm in Bloomfield, CT. He also provided trail maps for the new road trail. He met with Jack Hasagawa, Executive Director and Marlene Mayes from the Board of Directors to determine the purpose of the signs and obtain guidelines about the kinds of information that should appear on them. These resources are made of thick, waterproof dibond material digital printed matte lamination.

Sam would like to thank all of his family members, his fellow scouts and their

families, and The Home Depot, New Hartford, CT for graciously donating to his project and for all of their support during its completion. He would also like to thank the following individuals for their assistance: Kyle, Nick and Bob Beckius, Carson and Tim Boswell, William Bonnell, Jay and John Burrows, Dade and Ed Crofton, Regina, Jonathan, Jacob, Joachim and Jared Gatmaitin, Joseph Lepak, Andrew and Tom Mylander, his parents, Oliver Nigro, Don and Cynthia Reichler and Duane Royce. A special thank you to Nancy Antonucci who provided detailed CAD diagrams of the final sign designs.

In addition to the signs, Sam was able to make a donation to the 4-H Education

Center at Auerfarm following the sign installation in August 2015, thanks to the generosity of all who donated towards this project.

Sam would encourage all to visit the 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm and

walk the new Cider Hill Road Trail to read his signs and take in the magnificent view
