P.E. Lesson 3

What we are working on today:

Travelling Moves – Agility, Balance and Co-ordination

What we are learning about:

Demonstrate different ways of travelling with control of your body using simple and complex moves

How do I know what I have achieved? Bronze Level – I can travel using simple moves with control

of my body (Giant steps, tip toe, sidestep, jump, hop)

Silver Level – I can travel using complex moves with control of my body (i.e. moves using 2 to 4 point contact on the floor – hands and feet)

Gold Level – I can observe a teammate and feedback how they can improve their travelling movement.

Premier League Primary Stars Value:

Be Inspiring: Be a great example to others. Try the difficult moves and share how you achieved them with others. Can you help a classmate or

family member improve in our travelling moves this week?

What do you need to play?

You A classmate or family member Movement cards provided Cones or jumpers to mark out your playing area

P.E. Lesson 3

Game 1 – Basic Moves and Animal Moves

What you need – Cones and floor markers but if you don’t have cones, use jumpers or a safe object to mark out your playing area.

Safety First! Make sure you have a big and safe area to play on by asking an adult to move any furniture, anything that could break, or anything you could hurt yourself on. Please ensure you only play this game on a soft or cushioned surface like grass, a P.E. mat or a thick carpet. Please only do a few of the animal movements at a time and only for a few minutes to avoid poorly tummies.

How to Play

Make a playing area by placing two cones or jumpers 2-3 meters apart. You can make the distance between the cones further if you would like to challenge yourself. See video demonstrations below for how to perform each skill.

Starting at one cone, perform each of the moves below to the second cone. Make sure you get the travelling move correct before you move onto the next one.

Basic Moves:

Running – Swinging and pumping your arms. keeping your knees high. Skipping – Hop off one foot, land on same foot and switch to do the same on other

foot. Hopping – stand like a stork, with one foot up trying to touch your back, hop upwards

with your standing foot and land on same foot. Switch feet on way back. Jumping – Keep your knees and feet together and jump up from both feet as high as

you can, use your arms to help you jump high and long. Try to jump sideways to make it harder.

Galloping – put one leg straight out in front of you and one leg straight behind. Move forwards keeping the same legs in front and behind. Try to keep your arms straight.

P.E. Lesson 3

Side Stepping – Move left to right but stay facing the same way. Stay low with your knees slightly bent and keep a straight back, stay on your toes

Leaping – Jump off one foot and land on the other.

Animal Moves (pick 3 or 4 to do a day):

Bear walk – Walking on hands and feet, with one side going up and forward at a time. Puppy – Walking on hands and feet Poorly puppy – walking on two hands and only one foot Crab walk – lying face towards sky, lift body using arms and legs, so your straight Crocodile – In a press up position, keeping arms and legs straight, shuffle forward. Bunny – crouched with hands between knees, lunge forward with arms and jump in

towards arms with feet. Frog – Same as bunny but jumping high and forward. Elephant – Walking on two feet, hands clenched together, swinging arms side to side Kangaroo – feet and knees together, arms together in the middle and jumping with

bent knees forward. Giraffe – Arms up high and tall with hands together pointing palms down. Legs nice and

straight and walking one foot in front of other. Donkey – Crouch with hands place in front of you. Balancing on your hands make a big

high kick behind you. Snake – lying on belly using legs and arms to pull you forward (similar to a soldier

crawl) Caterpillar – starting on hands and feet, walk arms out till you have a straight back,

then walk feet in, repeat.

P.E. Lesson 3

Game 2 – Out of this World

What you need – Movement Cards provided and a timer. Feel free to play some music during this game to say when to start and stop the game.

Safety first! Make sure you have a big and safe area to play by asking an adult to move any furniture, anything that could break, or you could hurt yourself on. Please ensure you only play this game on a soft or cushioned surface like grass, a P.E. mat or a thick carpet.

How to play!

Print and cut out the movement cards attached. If you don’t have a printer, write them on pieces of paper. Spread them all around your playing area.

Imagine you are from another planet. Set a time for 3 minutes and on the word GO! Space run to collect one of the movement cards and perform the movement on the card for 5 seconds. Put your completed cards in a safe area so you can keep count of how many you completed. Keep picking up and performing the movements on the cards until the timer stops.

Movements:

Walking on tip toes Side steps Giant steps Walking on hands and feet Moon walk slowly with giant steps Space race (running very fast) Rocket rewind (travelling backwards on tiptoes or on both hands and feet).

Challenges

Change the amount of time you have – more or less minutes to play Add a partner – who can get the most completed cards Add a referee – only moves performed correctly can count Make up your own travelling moves. Put them on a card and add them to the game.

Don’t forget to use or make your own movement cards.

Game 3 – Travelling Stardust

What you need – Movement card from the worksheet provided and a partner. You also need the star marks cards or video demonstrations of movements provided.

Safety first! Make sure you have a big and safe area to play by asking an adult to move any furniture, anything that could break, or you could hurt yourself on. Please ensure you only play this game on a soft or cushioned surface like grass, a P.E. mat or a thick carpet.

How to play!

In pairs, one pupil is the space traveller (Major Tom) and the other is ground control. Ground control picks up a card from the playing area and tells the space traveller/major tom which move to do. Major Tom performs the movement and ground control have to provide feedback on how they can improve it. Swap roles every few minutes. David Bowie music optional.

P.E. Lesson 3

Be observant and look at each part of the travelling movement. Be specific and tell them what you think they can improve. Do they need to move a

body part better? How? Can you show them? Describe the body movement rather than the name – can they guess what it is an

perform it?

Coaching Tips

Really focus on the technique of each move to get it correct as per the demonstrations before you move on.

Take it slow and when you have the traveling move correct, speed it up. Use the videos to help you. Look back to see if you need to add or change your move to match. Ask an adult to video you performing the travelling move. Does it look like the one on the

professional P.E. videos? Do I need to change anything, so it looks the same?Questions to discuss what we have learned today:

Picking an easy and a difficult travelling movement – Describe what you had to do with you body to perform that travelling move?

Which moves were harder than others? Why? And how would you make it better next time? What advice did you give your partner to help them improve in their travelling moves? Did it

help? What is the difference between a 2, 3 or 4 point floor contact travelling move? Can you show

me an example of each oneResources:
