difficult world of chronic pain? Have you tried multiple ways to relieve the pain, such as injections, physical therapy, implants or surgery? Are you using pain medications you would like to get off of? Are you frustrated or in despair?

This manual was designed to help you! “Mind-Body-Spirit: Natural Alternatives to Opioids for Chronic Pain Management” is a newly-released compilation of some of the best-known natural methods to help those who struggle to cope with chronic pain. Even if the pain you have is short-term, and especially if the pain is severe, the techniques described here may be useful if practiced faithfully.

Part I, Overview of Chronic Pain, is designed to help the reader develop an understanding of the chronic pain process. Chapter 1 covers a simplified view of the anatomy of pain, as well as typical behaviors, emotions and beliefs of chronic pain sufferers. Some of the most common chronic pain disorders are listed. This chapter is presented first to establish a deeper appreciation of the complexity of chronic pain. Chapter 2 describes the most common medications prescribed for the myriad of problems encountered in pain disorders, as well as common medical procedures used to diagnose and treat pain disorders by the medical providers.

Part II, Natural Chronic Pain Management, takes the reader through a sequential program of “working with” different parts of the whole person, so that natural pain management becomes a cooperative effort to create healing in a holistic manner.

Chapter 1, “Working with Your Mind” helps identify dysfunctional belief systems, in the hopes that more constructive and positive beliefs can be developed. Addressing acceptance, attitude and motivation is vitally important.

Chapter 2, “Working with Your Emotions” looks at depression, anxiety, anger, and grief and loss issues that are very common in people with chronic pain. It presents the emotion of happiness as a goal that can be reached through simple and practical techniques.

Chapter 3, “Working with Your Body” addresses basic self-care: sleep, nutrition, weight control, elimination of harmful substances, stretching, exercise, pacing daily activities, antioxidant foods and supplements. Some common complementary approaches to pain relief are included, such as physical therapy, psychotherapy, aromatherapy, and chiropractic.

Chapter 4, “Working with Your Spirit” encourages the chronic pain sufferer to lift the internal spirit by mindfulness, meditation, prayer, gratitude, encouragement of self and others.

Chapter 5, “Working with Others” invites the reader to be an advocate for positive and holistic care for self, enjoining chronic pain sufferers to be respectfully assertive with others and to set appropriate boundaries that are self-caring when appropriate, as well as finding positive support from family, friends, community or church/synagogue.
