IB History Course Description IB History of the Americas is part one of a two-year history course. This course will look at the creation and development of the United States socially, economically and politically. At the end of this course students will complete the United States History End of Course Test. Those students who score an 85 or better in the course will have the opportunity to take the AP United States History exam at the end of the year. IB 20 th Century is part two of a two-year history course. This course will look at the case studies of Genghis Khan and Richard I. The course will also include the study Authoritarian leaders and the Cold War. At the end of the course, students will take three IB exams that align with the content in the two aforementioned courses. Student Expectations It is the responsibility of the student to find out about missing work when their absent. Make-up work (tests, quizzes, classwork, homework, etc.) is due within five days of the student returning to school. Papers and projects due during an absence MUST be turned in the day the student returns. Failure to turn them in upon returning will result in grade deduction. IB History

Course DescriptionIB History of the Americas is part one of a two-year history course. Internal AssessmentsStudents who take IB History are required to complete an internal assessment for the IB program. The history internal assessment is an historical investigation. Students will begin this document in their junior year and complete it for final submission in their senior year. The investigation is written on a student chosen topic and can not exceed 2,200 words.

External Assessments

The material taught during the junior year will be the content assessed in Paper 3 (Exam 3) at the end of the student's senior year. The exam will consist of three essay questions in which the student will have 45 minutes to answer each essay question. The material taught during the senior year will be the content assessed in Paper 1 and 2 ( Exam 1 and 2) at the end of the senior year.

Student Behavior, Classroom Rules and Expectations

In this class, I expect the following:

· Adherence to the class rules

· Completion of all assignments in the time allotted

· The restricted use of electronic devices unless otherwise stated by the teacher.

· Application of time and effort to achieving the goals and expectations of the class to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to fulfill the aims of the IB as expressed in the organization’s mission statement and the learner profile.

In this class, you can expect from me:

· Fair and honest assessments.

· Assignments to be returned in a timely manner.

· A new lens through which to view history.

G 6 Partially animated film in which a person has become a fish and helps the United States fight U-boat attacks by the Nazis.

The Hunt for Red October

PG 13 A film concerning submarine warfare during the Cold War.

The Sound of Music NR 6 A film about a family of Austrians and their escape from Nazi controlled Austria.

Lawrence of Arabia PG 13 A film about the atmosphere of Arab nations during World War I.

VALUE AND LIMITATIONS EXERCISE

Read each description and then briefly explain both the value and the limitations of the source.

1. You are a historian writing about the 1776 meeting of the 2nd Continental Congress as they debated the Declaration of Independence. One of the items you have found is a transcript of an interview done with Thomas Jefferson on the 25 th anniversary of the Declaration’s adoption.

2. You are investigating the efforts of the Nixon administration to bring peace with honor in Vietnam. You have been given access to tape recordings secretly made in the White House Oval Office as Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and other top government officials discusshow to bring the war to an end.

3. In a present day reinvestigation of the sinking of the Lusitania, you interview 3 elderlyAmerican women, Abigail von Whippersnapper, age 90, Mrs. William Joseph Robert Mann,age 93, and Maude Mildred Millicent Mason, age 89 ½. They were all on board the Lusitania and were rescued.

4. You are trying to determine the mood of Hitler’s Germany about his leadership in themid-1930s and you find a photograph of a group of female school children all dressed in white, lining a parade route, and smilingly saluting Hitler as his motorcade passes by.

5. In investigating the tactics of the 2000 Presidential campaign, you are told by a member of the Gore campaign staff that Gore said, “I can only win if I completely repudiate Bill Clinton’s actions.”

6. In trying to determine how many enemy soldiers were killed in combat in Vietnam, you consult the official U.S. Army “body count” lists made available to you by the Defense Dept.

7. In writing a biography of Eva Peron, you find a 1948 Buenos Aires newspaper which details Eva’s generous personal financial contributions to the poor people of Argentina.

8. You are investigating treatment of POWs in Korea and while researching in North Koreayou find eight confessions by U.S. POWs stating that they were well-treated, and werein no circumstances tortured even though they were guilty of crimes against the Korean people.

Assessment

The work completed over the summer will be counted as multiple grades for the first nine weeks. The Film Analysis and Political Cartoon Analysis assignments will count as the first two class work grades. The Source Analysis will count as the first quiz grade.

Due Dates: The film analysis, Political Cartoon Analysis and Source Analysis assignments are due on the first day of school.
