सदियों पहले अमृता नाम की एक ऐसी बहादुर लड़की थी, जिसने पुरे समाज को, पेड़ों की हिफाजत करने और उनसे प्रेम करने का संदेश दिया। अमृता जंगल के एक छोर पर स्थित एक गाँव में रहती थी। जंगल का एक पेड़ उसे बहुत प्रिय था। वह रोज जंगल में अपने प्रिय पेड़ के पास पहुँच जाती और उसके चारों ओर अपनी बाँहें डालकर खड़ी खड़ी हो जाती। वह जीवन में पेड़ों का महत्त्व समझती थी। एक दिन उस राज्य के राजा ने अपने सिपाहियों को एक नया किला बनाने के लिए उस जंगल से कुछ लकड़ियाँ काटने के लिए भेजा। जब अमृता को यह पता चला तो वह जंगल को ओर दौड़ी और सिपाहियों से उन पेड़ों को न काटने की प्रार्थना करने लगी। लेकिन सिपाहियों ने उसकी एक न सुनी। जल्द ही चारों ओर एक-एक करके पेड़ कटकर गिरने लगे। अमृता ने अपने पेड़ को भी गिरते हुए देखा। वह भागकर दूसरे पेड़ों से चिपककर खड़ी हो गई। सिपाहियों ने उसे हटाने का प्रयास किया परंतु वह न हटी। तब तक सभी गाँव वाले भी पहुँच गए। सभी ने मिलकर बचे हुए पेड़ों के आगे घेरा बना लिया। आखिर हारकर सिपाहियों को वहाँ से जाना पड़ा। इस प्रकार अमृता के साहस से जंगल तबाह होने से बच गया।
