1Eternal Father, strong to save,

whose arm has bound the restless wave,

who bade the mighty ocean deep

its own appointed limits keep:

oh, hear us when we cry to thee

for those in peril on the sea.

2O Savior, whose almighty word

the winds and waves submissive heard,

who walked upon the foaming deep,

and calm amid the storm didst sleep:

oh, hear us when we cry to thee

for those in peril on the sea.

3O Holy Spirit, who didst brood

upon the chaos dark and rude,

and bid its angry tumult cease,

and give, for wild confusion, peace:

oh, hear us when we cry to thee

for those in peril on the sea.

Greeting

PThe grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ; the love of God;

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

CAnd also with you.

Prayer of the Day

God, your Son prayed often, and both showed and taught his disciples how to pray. Help us to pray, that your love and your Spirit may enter and empower all that we do. Amen!

The Lesson – Luke 11:1-4

1He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.3     Give us each day our daily bread.4     And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.    And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

Sermon

Song of the Day: #785, When Peace Like a River

When peace like a river attendeth my way,

when sorrows like sea billows roll,

whatever my lot, you have taught me to say,

it is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain

It is well . . .

with my soul . . .

it is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

let this blest assurance control,

that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

and has shed his own blood for my soul. Refrain

My sin - oh, the bliss of this glorious thought;

my sin, not in part, but the whole,

is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Refrain

Lord, hasten the day when our faith shall be sight,

the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,

the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;

even so it is well with my soul. Refrain

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers [The congregation responds to each petition with the words ‘Hear our prayer.’]

Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need.

Lord our rock, you are our foundation in Jesus Christ, your Son, whom we confess as the living God. Prepare your church for its mission in bearing witness to Christ, both here at home and throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy,

You call forth praises from the far reaches of the universe to the smallest of creatures. Join our songs to theirs, that a spirit of praise and thanksgiving will arouse us to cherish this wondrous home you give us. Lord, in your mercy,

All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord. Direct the leaders of countries, legislators and magistrates, mayors and councils, to walk in your ways. Help leaders regard those in need with mercy and fulfill your loving purposes in the governance of peoples. Lord, in your mercy,

Though we walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve us, deliver us, and fulfill your purpose for us. According to your steadfast love, grant healing and wholeness to those who are bereaved, in trouble or adversity, or sick and in need of care. Lord, in your mercy,

You call us into this community, in which we, though many, are one in Christ. May we recognize in ourselves and in one another the unique gifts you have given us for the building up of the church for the sake of the world. Lord, in your mercy,

You are the everlasting Rock from which we were hewn, and you restore your people to joy and gladness. In memory and hope, we thank you for the lives of those we have known who now rest in you. May we celebrate with them at your feast. Lord, in your mercy,

PIn the sure and certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love,

we offer these prayers.

CAmen.

The Peace

PMay the peace of the Lord be with you always.

CAnd also with you.

Offering Prayer

God of goodness and growth, all creation is yours, and your faithfulness is firm.

Water and word, wine and bread: these are signs of your abundant grace.

Nourish us through these gifts, that we might proclaim your steadfast love

in our communities and in the world, through Jesus Christ, our strength and song. Amen.

The Meal

P The Lord be with you.C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.C It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Words of Institution

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Communion Blessing and Prayer

God of the welcome table, in this meal we have feasted on your goodness

and have been united by your presence among us. Empower us to go forth

sustained by these gifts so that we may share your neighborly love with all. Amen.

Benediction

Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come,

nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,

will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

God, the creator, ☩ Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the comforter,

bless you and keep you. Amen!

Sending Song: Bring Forth the Kingdom

You are salt for the earth, O people:

salt for the Kingdom of God!

Share the flavor of life, O people;

live in the kingdom of God!

Refrain Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,

bring forth the kingdom of peace;

bring forth the kingdom of justice,

You are a light on the hill, O people:

light for the city of God!

Shine so holy and bright, O people:

Announcements

As a celebration of “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday, on September 13th there will be three service activities that anyone in the congregation is encouraged to participate in!

· putting landscaping stone around the peace garden

· trash pickup in our sponsored area by the exit from Route 309

· a deep cleaning of the pews, woodwork, and railings in the sanctuary

More details will be released as we get closer, but all activities will require masks and physical distancing.

We will be holding our annual pet blessing this year (again, with masks and distancing, and outside); it will be on Saturday, October 3rd at noon with a rain date of Sunday the 4th at noon.

Work on the kitchen has finally (!) been completed – two French drains are in place, as well as a sump pump; a new counter has been installed; there is a dehumidifier; and the utility sink as well as a 3-bowl sink (for washing and sanitizing dishes) are hooked up and working. It’s been a long time, but the kitchen is again ready for use whenever we are ready and able to use it.

This year’s synod assembly, postponed from June, has become an online assembly, now scheduled to take place in October. It’s particularly important this year as the synod will be electing a new bishop, and the congregation is supposed to have two representatives (in addition to the pastor). If you are interested in serving in this way – and it’s a great way to get a sense of the larger church – the sessions are as follows:

· Friday, Oct 16, worship (6-6:40) and session (7-9:30)

· Sunday, Oct 18, (2-4)

· Friday, Oct 23 (7-9:30)

· Saturday, Oct 24 (9:30-11:45) and (1:30-3:50)

Please let Pastor Metzloff know if you are interested. Thanks!
