North Korea: UN Security Council strongly disapproves of
ballistic missile launch and warns of further action

The UN Security Council has strongly disapproved North Korea's
ballistic missile launches and warned of "further significant
measures" if Pyongyang military base does not stop nuclear and
missile testing.
A council statement late on Monday (local time of USA) followed
a strong condemnation by secretary-general Antonio of the latest
launch and a decision by US President Donald Trump to deal with
North Korea.
The Security Council condemned the Saturday launch and a
previous launch on October 19, saying North Korea's activities to
develop its nuclear weapons missile system violate UN approval
resolutions and increase tensions.
It called on all UN members to use the six approval resolutions
considered by the council since 2006.
North Korea confirmed on Monday it had successfully tested
a new type of medium- to long-range nuclear missile the
previous day, claiming further advancement in a weapons program it
is acquiring in violation of United Nations resolutions.
The North Korea news agency said leader Kim Jong-un supervised
the test of the PGS-2, a new type of weapon capable of carrying a
nuclear warhead.
North Korea fired the nuclear missile into the sea early on
Sunday, the first test of US President Donald Trump's vow to
get tough on the isolated North Korean state that tested
nuclear and ballistic missiles last year at an uncommon rate.
China condemned North Korea for its latest missile test, but
would not say if it would work with the new US President to put
pressure on Pyongyang base.
It was the last of North Korea's near neighbors to condemn the
launch, saying it opposed North Korean missile tests that violate
UN resolutions.
Analysts noted the timing was tricky for Beijing, which had been
putting pressure on South Korea to abandon plans for a new US
anti-missile radar it said was needed to protect it from its
northern neighbor.
This latest North Korean test would, according to researchers,
help South Korea further judge its plans for the new missile
shield.
Sunday's ballistic missile test appeared to show North Korea
making progress on its eventual aim to have a nuclear weapon.
"The Sunday test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile by
the North Korean regime is in clear violation of past United
Nations Security Council resolutions and recent warning from the
US,”, Said Mr George Lopez, an expert in economic sanctions and
nuclear disarmament and a professor emeritus of peace studies at
the University of Notre Dame.
"As such, it is a significant challenge to the Trump
Administration because it has yet to develop its policies toward
the region, toward North Korea, or its role in the UN and its use
of economic sanctions. So, we may learn a lot about Mr Trump's
crisis diplomacy in the coming days."
