Unit: Transportation

Topic- What kind of Transportation do I use and why?

Student outcome- I use transportation to get to school and other places.

Yesterday we learned about the yellow school bus today we will discuss the city bus. People use a MetroCard when they enter a bus. The bus driver drives the bus and takes people to their destination. In NYC we use public, shared transportation including buses. Have you taken a city bus? There are many seats on a bus because it can carry lots of people. Look at images of a city bus and read a book about a boy traveling on a city bus in the book: Last Stop on Market Street https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk6CWvW_5-s

Letters of the week - k, yNumber of the week- 20Math concepts - Patterns, classifying objects

WritingAsk students to copy the letters and draw a MetroCard after looking at it

ArtMake a ground transportation collage, using cut outs from a car magazine.

LiteracyStudents will identify the letters on the track, and discuss the sound that each letter makes.

Dramatic Play/ KitchenDrivers need a map to find an address, use a map to determine where you are going, and pretend to have passengers in your vehicle with you.

Music/ MovementRed Light, Green Light: Ask children what a green light means and what a red light means. Invite them to practice following traffic lights. Model first, then let children take turns being a traffic light. Have children make a sign with “GO” in green on one side and “STOP” in red on the other. Children can dance or move when the light is “green” and should stop on “red.”

BlocksEgg Carton Trains: Collect empty egg cartons and invite children to use them as subway or other passenger trains. Provide writing utensils and invite children to label the trains with the letters, numbers and/or names of trains with which they are familiar. Encourage them to build tracks for the trains and create signs to add to the tracks.

Fine motorMake wheels with playdough and shapes to make a vehicle

Unit: Transportation

Topic- What kind of Transportation do I use and why?

Student outcome- I use transportation to get to school and other places.

Today we will talk about trains and NYC subways. Trains are a part of ground transportation. What sound does the train make? Choo, choo. Trains can carry lots of people and anyone can ride the train. People use metro cards to enter a subway station. Look at visuals of trains and MetroCard’s. Trains travel on rails. Trains can carry people and transport items like food and other things. Look at images of railroad and train tracks.

Letters of the week - k, yNumber of the week- 20Math concepts - Patterns, classifying objects

WritingAttach a crayon to a small toy car and write the word CAR

ArtTrain Tracks: Cover the table with large paper and draw train tracks. Invite children to create trains using a variety of materials and place them on the tracks. Supply pictures of trains for children to reference. As children work, talk about what they know about passenger and freight trains.

LiteracyStudents will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with that letter and discuss its sound. (or) Students will fish for specific magnetic alphabet letters using fishing rods.MathParking Lot: Use a piece of cardboard to create a parking lot for vehicles. Number the parking spots as well as an assortment of small vehicles, and invite children to park the vehicles in the correct parking space

ScienceCreate roads and maps using paper plates or tape. Use magnet wands and metal pieces to follow the path to locate the place where we can find vehicles in our community. Ex. Hospital, fire station, airport, etc.

Fine MotorCut a car out of a magazine and paste it to construction paper along with a toilet paper roll. Fill the roll with beads and to signify filling a gas tank.

Outdoors- Use sidewalk chalk to name a letter (or number, or symbol) and invite children to pretend to fly, swim, walk, drive, etc., to it.

Unit: Transportation

Topic- What kind of Transportation do I use and why?How are various modes similar and different?Student outcome- I use transportation to get to school and other places.

Today we will talk about ground vehicles and name them including a car, and taxis. A car has four wheels and we can travel long or short distances in a car. Some people travel by taxi. NYC has many types of taxis, some taxis are yellow and black. We tell the driver an address and pay them to take us to our destination/ where we are going. Look at images of cabs, ask if they have ever taken a cab, and where to.

Letters of the week - k, yNumber of the week- 20Math concepts - Patterns, classifying objects

WritingMake lines on a road using white chalk on black construction paper

ArtVehicle Shapes: Supply an assortment of shape cutouts and small vehicles or pictures of vehicles. Invite children to reference the vehicles and/or pictures of vehicles to create their own vehicles. Before children begin working, encourage them to look critically at the vehicles provided and to think about what shapes they will need in order to make their own.

LiteracyFind letters around the classroom/ home that start with the letter of the week. Draw pictures of the item and discuss the item and letter sound.

Dramatic Play/ KitchenBuild a subway station using cardboard for the train. Let students name the train and the subway station. Invite them to create subway signs and add metro cards, subway maps to the center.

MathPattern Block Vehicles: Invite children to use pattern blocks to create vehicles. As you work with them, ask what type of vehicles they are making, what the vehicles transport, who operates the vehicles, how the vehicles move, etc.

ScienceMagnet Maps: Draw roads or a simple map on a paper plate. Supply a magnetic wand and a small car that has some metal pieces. Invite children to explore how to place the wand under the paper plate and use it to move the car around the roads. Discuss why the car moves.

BlocksTrain Station- Invite children to consider building a train station. They may want to make a familiar station, look at pictures of train stations for inspiration, or use their imaginations to build. After building, children may want to add train tracks, and/or trains to their stations. Children could make trains or tracks out of classroom materials (i.e. small building materials or recycled materials) in the math/manipulatives center or the art center and add them to their train stations.

Topic- What kind of Transportation do I use and why?How are various modes similar and different?Student outcome- I use transportation to get to school and other places.

Today we will discuss other ground vehicles including a bike and a motorcycle. Some people travel by bike and motorcycle. Unlike a car that has four wheels, a bike and motorcycle have two wheels. Usually, one person can ride on a bike and motorcycle. It cannot hold lots of people. A motorcycle can travel really fast.

Letters of the week - k, yNumber of the week- 20Math concepts - Patterns, classifying objects

WritingWriting foldersArtTransportation on the ground: Invite students to create their favorite ground transportation. They can create their own unique cars, trucks, train, motorcycle, bikeLiteracyAlphabet soup- students will identify magnet letters and phoneme/sounds in a plastic bowl of “pretend soup”.

Dramatic PlayPretend to go to a drive-in movie theater, draw pictures of your favorite character from the movie.

Math18 Wheelers: Create cutouts of large semi-trucks without wheels as well as a large number of cutout wheels. Add a number and/or dots on each truck and invite children to put the correct number of wheels on each truck.

Computer TechnologyUse computer programs to review Patterns/ counting numbers

Fine MotorAsk the student to hole punch train tickets before boarding a train
