Hello Year3! Welcome to week 2 of the second half of the Summer term. We hope you have enjoyed getting back into schoolwork again and enjoyed being scientists with magnets (as well as enjoying the weather)! Thank you for all of your emails and pictures. It is lovely to see what you have been getting up to and also helps us feel more connected to you too. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can see you again in the flesh! On this theme we have a little challenge for you to complete. We would love as many of you as possible to take part in our ‘pass it on’ challenge, like many of the other year groups in school have been doing. Please send your short video clips via email to [email protected] by Wednesday 10th June

We also hope you have been enjoying watching Mrs Seagrave’s caterpillars grow. Videos of their daily progress are being added to the Year 3 section of the website.

This week, we are continuing our science theme and are beginning to look at plants and flowers for the rest of the term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

This week’s learning tasks:

Maths:

This week we will be focusing on recapping our learning of subtracting money, multiplying and dividing. First, have a look at the work you completed last week and recap what you have already learned. This week, we would like you to focus on ‘Summer Term Week 3 w/c 4th May’- lessons 3 and 4. Also ‘Summer Term Week 4 w/c 11th May’- lessons 1, 2 and 3. Please note that the dates do not correspond with this week’s dates!

Please watch the video and complete the activities. If you are feeling extra confident you could have a go at the ‘Friday Maths Challenge’ found at the bottom of the page.

P.E:

Notts School Games Organisers are publishing weekly PE ideas which we would like all the children to have a go at. We hope you enjoyed last week’s activities and virtual competition. Follow the link to see what this week’s activity is and enjoy taking part. https://www.abbeyroadprimary.co.uk/weekly-pe-skills-physical-activity-and-competitions/

Forest School:

We hope you are enjoying taking part in the 30 days wild event. We would love to know how you are getting on and if you have had any different or exciting ideas. So far Mrs Seagrave has been on a woodland walk, made a picture with items from the forest floor, made a daisy chain, had a picnic in the woodland and made a den out of sticks.

Please don’t forget to fill in your wild activities on your calendar and send pictures to Mrs Horton. Remember on the website, we have included some ideas and inspiration for the activities as well as the calendar for you to print out and fill in. Aim to do something ‘wild’ every day in June.

Reading Comprehension:

Answers from last week:

Magnet Mania comprehension question answers:

1. What is a magnet?

A magnet is an object that attracts metal such as iron.

2. Tick the correct answer:Magnets have two poles, these are called…

North Pole and South Pole.

3. ‘When the same poles face each other, such as a north pole and another north pole they will repel’. What does the word repel mean?

The word ‘repel’ means to move away from.

4. ‘The bigger the magnet the more powerful it is’.

Is this statement True or False? How do you know?

False because in the text it says ‘the size of the magnet does not always correspond to the power of the magnet. Some large magnets are not as strong as smaller ones.’

5. List at least three places you might find magnets in your home.

Your answers could be items such as; televisions, washing machines, telephones or hovers.

6. Which direction will a compass always point?

A compass will always point north.

Please now read ‘All about Magnets’.

7. ‘The Earth is a Magnet’- carefully read the information under this heading. In two sentences summaries what you have found out.

Your answer could be any key information from this heading as long as it is a summary that is only two sentences long.

8. What is a ‘temporary magnet’?

Temporary magnets lose their magnetism after a short amount of time.

9. Use the box below to draw your own diagram of two magnets attracting. Remember to label the poles.

10. Use the box below to draw your own diagram of two magnets repelling. Remember to label the poles.

This week we would like you to read about beans and how they grow. This will help you as we move through our plants and flowers topic over the next few weeks.

Read the following passages and answer the questions afterwards. Try and write in full sentences using parts of the question in your answer.

Science

To start off our topic, we would like you to recap what you already know about plant parts and then find out a bit more about the function of each part of a plant.

Start by completing this easy diagram:

Now, please read the powerpoint – Parts of a plant. This will be uploaded separately to the website as it is too large to add in here.

Then read the pages of the following e-book using the link to find out a bit more about plant and flower parts. Stick to the first page and click on the links to find out each part and its function. We will read the rest of the e-book over the following weeks.

Once you have read and understood the information see if you can label the following diagram and complete the sentences below:

If you have any daisies or dandelions growing in your garden / nearby parks, look carefully at them, have a go at cutting into them with scissors and see what you can see inside. You may have some flowers (check they are not poisonous!) growing in your garden that your parents will allow you to look at and possibly dissect. Only do this if you have permission and never take flowers from other people’s gardens or council owned gardens. Remember

to wash your hands carefully afterwards. Look carefully at the parts and see if you can use the correct scientific names.

Art

As a creative task this week, we would like you to watch the attached youtube clip and have a go at drawing and colouring the hibiscus flower. We would love to see your results!

Writing – This week we would like you take a photo of your garden / park / public open space. Write some sentences to describe what you can see. Alternatively, use the picture provided below. We would like you try to use:

prepositions (where it is e.g. under, below, beside, nearby) powerful adjectives (such as pale, cloudy pink or dark, green and bushy) similes (a deep red like the setting sun, or the stick that is twisted and as gnarled as an old

tree trunk) add details in a subordinate clause using commas (The red flower, which is in front of the

shed, is a beautiful poppy. Or Near the sunflowers, that turn to face the sun, there are some sweet smelling purple flowers.)

Conjunctions (because, so, while, and, but, however)

Hopefully this all makes sense. Please enjoy these activities. Try setting yourself the target of finishing a maths and at least one another activity each day. If you have any questions or photos please do send them to us!

Work hard, play hard and most of all stay happy and safe!
