Beachcombers – Year 2/3Week 1
Art/DT
Make a miniature seashore garden, using natural
materials such as pebbles, twigs, sand and shells.
Science
Find out about the micro-climate of a rock pool. Draw a rock pool with labels and captions to show what lives and grows there. Find out
about who eats who!

Write a story. Imagine you are a creature that lives in a rockpool. Think about what
might happen to you and draw out a simple story map
to plan before you write.
Week 2
Art/DT
Make a 3-D sea animal. You could use any material your like – perhaps papier-
mache, fabric, plastic bottles, clay, dough or Lego
pieces.
Science
Look at real shells or pictures of shells. Sketch the shapes and patterns
putting those that are similar together. Investigate which
animals originally lived in each shell and write about
these.
English
Make a word search with all the names of the living things you have learnt
about. Ask your family to try to solve it!
Week 3
Art/DT
Design, draw and paint a picture of a beach hut. Think
about what it would be made from and what you
would have in it to improve your stay.
Science
Find out about crustaceans: the Tasmanian giant crab, the Japanese spider crab,
thee mantis shrimp, the coconut crab and the white-clawed crayfish. Find out about what they look like,
what they eat and how they respond to their habitat.
Make a presentation or fact-file about what you have
learnt.
English
Plan a non-fiction book or fact-file about the seashore.
Think about what each chapter will contact and the
illustration that will accompany the writing.
Include a “fun facts” page.
