Then

I saw on the wallA cockroach pregnant with egg,In the loins of labour,Bringing forth new life.

2.Read the poem below and then answer the questions that follow.

When with prophetic eye I peer into the future

I see that I shall perish upon this road

Driving men that I do not know

This metallic monster that I now dictate,

This docile elaborate horse,

That in silence seems to simmer and strain,

Shall surely revolt some tempting day.

Thus I shall die; not that I care

For any man’s journey,

Nor for proprietor’s gain

Nor yet for love of my own

Nor for these do I attempt the forbidden limits

For these defy the traffic-man and the cold cell

Risking everything for the little little more.

They shall say, I know who pick up my bones,

(Poor chap another victim to the ruthless machine-

Concealing my blood under the metal

You recall the day you came upon himAnd were startled by his silent presenceIntruding into your preoccupation:You hurled a coinWhich missed the markAnd rolled into the gutterWhere he groped for itWith a chilling grotesque gratitudeThat followed you down the street. You dived into the nearest shopTo escape the stareOf the scandalized crowdThat found you guilty Of recalling attentionTo the impenetrable patienceThey had learnt not to see.

Read the narrative below and answer the questions that follow:

This thing happened long time ago when people first appeared on earth. One day, the people were told that if they didn’t want to die, they should send Chameleon with a fat piece of meat to take to the moon who would pass it to God. They were also told to give Lizard a hoe to take to the moon. Then, if Chameleon reached the moon with the fat piece of meat before Lizard with the hoe, the people would not die, but would live forever.

That day, the people never slept a wink. They stayed awake throughout the night and early the next morning. They sent Chameleon far ahead of Lizard. However, on the way, the temptation to taste the succulent appetizing piece of meat proved too great, so Chameleon stopped to taste a little meat. The meat proved to be tender and juicy and Chameleon ended up eating a chunk of it. The remaining piece that was to be taken to the moon became dirty, covered with soil. Once Chameleon realized that he was late, he lowered the meat down from his back and began to hurry, dragging it along. As Chameleon hurried along, all the other animals stared at him, sniggered and hid away. But of course, most of them have been envious of Chameleon for the important errand on which he had been sent. So they were happy to see that he had failed. By the time Chameleon reached the moon, with the dirty piece of meat, Lizard had already handed over to the moon and man thus lost the golden opportunity to acquire immorality. The moon chased away the Chameleon, and threw the dirty piece of meat after him. The hoe which Lizard carried was used by the Luo to dig graves and bury their dead. Death had been born.

Since that time Chameleon messed up the Moon’s gift meat, the type of death from which an individual would die is fixed right on the day of his or her birth! And initially death didn’t come secretly to human beings. Death just sent word to whoever he wanted to take away to get ready on a particular day. But since no one liked to die, people used to give death a hard time. He always had to chase one person for days, before he overpowered and caught him. People used all sorts of tricks to evade death, so he decided to come secretly and catch them unawares. That’s why human beings never know the date they die.

Read the story below and then answer the questions that follow (20 marks)

Once upon a time, the Hare and Cock were great friends. They did everything together including living in one house. They would every morning leave for the forest and plains to look for food to feed their family members. And every evening they would arrive home, each with their spoil, if they had been lucky and at times with nothing at all.

Whichever the case, each one them would be exhausted at the end of the hunt. At home, their wives would make the meal and soon each one of them would be sound asleep.

However, on one night the hare woke up in the middle of the night so as to attend to the call of nature. When he looked at the Cock, he saw it standing on one leg, with his head invisible. This disturbed him a bit and for the next three nights, he woke up at the same hour to ascertain whether what he had seen was true or a hoax. But on each night he woke up, he found the Cock on one foot and presumably without his head. He then decided, the next morning on their way to the forest to ask his friend what happened to him every night because he always appeared transformed into a new image.

“I usually cut off my head and leg before going to sleep.” said the Cock. “Can you make me sleep like you? Without your head and leg?” inquired the Hare.“Sure, sure,” replied the excited CockIt was therefore agreed that the Cock would cut the hares head and legs the following night.

11

All day long, the hare waited with anticipation for night to arrive so that he could be transformed into a new being like his friend, the Cock. The clock to him was not moving. After hours of waiting, evening arrived finding the hare in a very jovial

mood. He hurriedly ate the evening meal that Mrs. Hare served, so that he could experience sleeping without his legs and head. In the meantime, the Cock was sharpening a big matchet ready to chop off the hare’s head and legs. After his hearty meal, he came over and said to the Cock, “Here I am, ready to sleep without my head and

legs”Within minutes all was over. Mrs. Hare tried to wake up her husband to no avail. There was blood all over

the place and no heart beat. When she realized what had actually happened to her husband, she wailed in the darkness. On looking up at the Cock, she saw that he had raised his matchet to cut off her head and decided to run for her dear life never to be seen again.

The Cock was very happy and called Hen to chop the pieces which were cooked and the whole family happily feasted on for days. And that is why the saying goes “Curiosity killed the cat.”

ONCE UPON A TIME

Once upon a time dear son

They used to laugh with their hearts

And laugh with their eyes, but now they only

Laugh with their teeth

While their ice-cold-block-eyes

Search behind my shadow

There was a time indeed

They used to shake hands with their hearts

But that’s gone son

Now they shake hands without hearts

As their hands search my empty pockets

‘feel at home’, ‘come again’

They say but when I come

Again and feel at home, once, twice

There will be no thrice

For then I find the doors shut on me.

So I have learned many things, son

I have learned to wear many faces

Like dresses, home face, office face,

Cocktail face

With all their conforming smiles

Like a fixed portrait smile

And I have learned too

To laugh with only my teeth

And shake hands without my heart

I have also learned to say ‘Goodbye”

When I mean ‘Good riddance’

To say ‘Glad to meet you’

Without being glad: and to say ‘it has been

Nice talking to you’ after being bored

But believe me son I want to be what I used to be when I was like you

I want to unlearn these muting things

How to laugh, show me how

I used to laugh and smile

Once upon a time when I was like you
