R

Ingredients350 g blanched whole almonds300 g unsalted butter300 g caster sugar3 whole free-range eggs500 g shortcrust pastry6-7 plums, halved and destoned3 tablespoons vanilla sugar

MethodLine a 28cm/11 inch loose-bottomed flan tin with the pastry and bake it blind.

In a food processor, blitz the whole almonds to a fine powder and put into a bowl. Then blitz the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add this to the almonds with the lightly beaten eggs and fold in until completely mixed and nice and smooth. Then place in the fridge to firm up slightly. Once the mixture has chilled, pour it into your tart case about three-quarters full. You don’t want to overfill it otherwise it will spill over the edge when you add the plums.

Toss the plums in the vanilla sugar, let them sit for 10 minutes, then push them into the tart mixture. Bake the tart on a tray at 180°C for about 1 hour, or until the almond mix has become firm and golden on the outside but is still soft in the middle. Allow to cool for about ½ an hour and serve with ice cream or crème fraîche.

Enjoy!

Imagine having a gourmet meal prepared for you by Auckland’s top restaurants and chefs? Well that is what happened at

One of the things I love doing in my leisure time, is riding. Both

mountain biking and more recently road cycling. I tend to head out really early in the morning before the traffic hits the road. After the initial expense of purchasing the bike and gear, I find it’s a relatively cheap form of exercise but gives me a great deal of pleasure.

What isn’t so pleasurable of course is having an accident, and then the fall out afterwards. Sadly I recently came off my bike riding through the Wynyard Quarter in the wee dark hours. As I was lying on the ground in a huge amount of pain, all sorts of things started to running through my head. Apart from the obvious things like letting staff know I wouldn’t be in the office that day. Others that raced through were; need to let the travel agent know I need to cancel my holiday to Vietnam, monthly accounts needed to be paid by the 20th, my

dog was locked inside the house, and the car registration is due. Well you get the point, and I am sure you have had these moments yourself.

Most of my issues were relatively minor concerns and things that could be dealt with easily, but the message for me was bigger than that. It made me realise how traumatic it could be for friends and family had the accident been worse than just a broken collarbone. Because I spend a lot of my

leisure time traveling overseas I do have a power of attorney, who knows me pretty well, he does know which banks I bank with, and where my will is, and many of what seems like minor details, but become really important in an emergency.

However this was a wakeup call for me, and as soon as I am able I will be completing a treasure map outlying all of my assets, bank

account numbers, other investments, alarm codes, and most important - insurance policy details. In this case I was lucky and able to deal with it myself, but this isn’t always the case. I had a situation some years ago, where clients were critically ill in hospital from a tragic accident, and family members had no idea who their income protection policies were with. I was able to locate their policy numbers and assist with getting the claim started.

If you are in an accident do your family know what insurance policies you have and who your broker is? Do you have a power

of attorney that can deal with your bank and finances for you? My family live overseas, but we are all close. They know the names of my friends but in most cases have never met any of them. Fortunately with Facebook and other social media they could actually get a message to them, but it’s not a particularly personal way of hearing about an accident.

When life goes to plan and we live each day as we hope, it’s all fine, but every now and then a curve ball is thrown our way. Are you prepared for it financially and have you got your treasure map in place so that others can step in and minimise any fall out?

In case of emergency Have you got a treasure map in place?

Provisional Tax and GST were due for payment to Inland Revenue on 07 May

2014.

Many business owners may have waited until 07 May to post a cheque for taxes due. Others may have dropped off their returns and cheque payments at their local Westpac Bank. If this is you, then you need to read this.

Inland Revenue has recently announced that from 01 October 2014, the way payments are made to Inland Revenue is going to change.

What are the changes?

1. Currently, taxpayers are able to make payments and drop off returns and forms at any branch of Westpac Bank. From 01 October, Westpac will only be able to accept payments from taxpayers and will not be accepting returns or forms on behalf of Inland Revenue.

Westpac will still be able to accept cash and Eftpos payments and you will still be able to continue to make payments using online banking, credit and debit cards and international money transfers.

2. Payments posted to Inland Revenue must be

received by them, on or before the due date to avoid any

penalties or interest. Previously, Inland Revenue had accepted that payment had been received as from the date postmarked on the envelope.

What does this mean for you?

If you like to make tax payments by cheque, you will need to ensure that all payments are received by Inland Revenue before the due date. To ensure this happens, you may need to post the cheque up to 3 days before the due date to guarantee that it will be delivered on time.

These changes may mean that you will also

have to ensure your returns are received by the Inland Revenue before the due date if you wish to continue to use cheques for payment of any tax liability.

So why the change?

The main reason for the change is that the Inland Revenue is trying to encourage more taxpayers to pay taxes and file returns electronically. To quote the Inland Revenue “over 70% of our payments are currently made online and we want to encourage more customers to pay electronically”.

They also believe that those who post cheque payments on the due date had an unintended advantage. They believe this change will allow all customers to be treated equally, regardless of their payment method.

These changes will affect a large number of taxpayers and business owners. If you are going to be affected by these changes, it is probably now time to start considering what changes you will need to make to your processes to ensure compliance and to avoid any late payment penalties and interest. You will then be ready for when the changes come into place.

If you have any questions regarding the changes to IRD tax payments, please do not hesitate to contact the team at Withers Tsang & Co.

Tucked away off of Pt Chevalier Road, near Walker Park and Eric

Armishaw Reserve is a beautifully renovated two storey character home. The street appeal is evident with the pristine white picket fence and newly painted fascade.

Downstairs are two bedrooms, one adjacent to the entryway and internal garage access could be used as a home office. The other three bedrooms are upstairs, with the very spacious master bedroom featuring a walk in wardrobe. The upstairs is fully carpeted lending a very warm feel. One of the bathrooms is upstairs, and very nicely appointed with a shower. The other bathroom downstairs has a shower and bathtub for washing the littlies or relaxing in.

To the left of the entrance is the formal lounge, spacious, yet cosy with a bay window seat that looks out to the street. Further along is the open plan kitchen, dining and living area. The kitchen is set into the corner and is light and bright, complete with a breakfast bar. The colours are all neutral and work in well with the beautifully restored wooden floors that shine in the sunlight.

All of this space flows seamlessly out onto a large covered deck that’s perfect for alfresco entertaining. But wait that’s not all, just over the expanse of green back garden is an in ground pool, which will delight the entire family. So, if a large family home is what you’re looking for, this one hard to beat!

Located on a sunny corner section of tree lined Castle Street and Richmond Road, this is the quintessential West Lynn location. Currently housing a production company, and previously an artistic space, this site could also easily be converted for residential use. The eye of an architect and some inspiration by the new owners could turn this building into the highly coveted and seldom found four bedroom / two living area home that are currently in so much demand.
