UON’s Role in the Upper Hunter The University of Newcastle (UON) has a major role to play in the Hunter’s economic transition into a knowledge-based econo-my. This is achieved by working with government and industry partners to create innovation that delivers enhanced opportuni-ty, industrial expansion and economic growth. In partnership with Muswellbrook Shire Council, the University has established a research and education facility in the Hunter called UON Upper Hunter, located within the Tertiary Education Centre in what is known as the Hunter Region Innovation Pre-cinct – a precinct which also houses TAFE NSW and the Library. The structure of UON Upper Hunter is based on the Newcastle Institute for Energy & Resources (NIER) model and focuses on the delivery of regionally relevant research and engagement activ-ities that help shape the future of the region. UON Upper Hunter supports the area’s diversification goals of becoming an innovation intensive region. It provides a flexible framework for postgraduate students to access opportunities to develop applied research skills and enhance employment opportunities across a wide range of industries, whilst providing a supporting platform for existing research excel-lence and innovation and enabling the expansion of critical research to benefit the region. It provides a space for UON staff and students to work with local industry and community to create, develop and produce ideas and products which generate ongoing social and economic benefits. UON Upper Hunter is an integral part of the UON’s Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) and facilitates the delivery of events and projects through the Council’s I2N Upper Hunter Hub. The Upper Hunter Hub will give innovative startups and SMEs located in the Upper Hunter access to the wider I2N programs.

Webinar: When is it right to outsource?
Today’s dynamic business world has led to many different models employed by companies to maximise efficiency, minimise waste and boost productivity and outsourcing is one of the most effective ways to do so. Some companies choose to keep everything in-house while others engage external consultants or freelancers to perform niche tasks that they specialise in. There is also a third model which is proving to be gaining in popularity and this is outsourcing entire departments to other companies that are experts in the field.
Five key reasons you should attend this webinar:
• Your team is already not in the same place. If your team is already working from different places, it shows that your business is already setup to deal with outsourced help in areas such as IT, digital marketing, traditional marketing, bookkeeping and accounting functions.
• You are growing and don’t have the internal resources to support it. • You want to make sure you are utilising the cloud and latest technologies.
• You want to save on expenses. • You want to work with industry experts

TV campaign highlights thousands of mining-related jobs across the state. Mining is good for jobs, good for communities and good for New South Wales. That’s the key message of a new campaign recently launched by the NSW Minerals Council to highlight the tens of thousands jobs created by, or related to, the New South Wales mining industry. NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said it takes a lot of people in a lot of jobs to keep mines going in New South Wales – thousands of people in thousands of jobs right across the state, includ-ing thousands of people working in Sydney.
