Dear Weatherhead Community,

Looking back over my first year as dean, I’m excited about what we have accomplished as a school. I want to thank you on behalf of the entire Weatherhead School for the support you’ve given us, both financially and with your time and resources. We would not be where we are today without your commitment.

Fiscal Year 2008 Highlights

The Annual Fund closed at $506,692.05, a 16% increase over last year. Overall, we raised $3,328,898.88, the second consecutive year we’ve exceeded $3 million in funds raised.

We awarded six professorships to six outstanding professors. All of these professors had an opportunity to present their work to the Weatherhead Community and we had a chance to once again thank the donors.

The School achieved high rankings in several publications. Here are just a few – Financial Times, #1 Ohio Management School, #2 Organizational Behavior Program in the world, Business Week, #13 Undergraduate Accountancy Program, #41 Undergraduate Business Program. Visit http://weatherhead.case.edu/about/glance/ for a complete list of Weatherhead’s rankings and distinctions

Our revised website is up and running. Please visit the site when you get a chance (http://weatherhead.case.edu/).

We hosted alumni events in six US cities, Japan and India. Keep abreast of alumni events in your area on our calendar (http://weatherhead.case.edu/about/events/).

We finalized our arrangement with ESADE to offer the MS in Positive Organizational Development and Change (MPOD) program in Barcelona.

Looking Ahead

We currently have alumni events scheduled throughout the country and world including Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and New York. We will continue to add new events so don’t forget to visit http://weatherhead.

case.edu/about/events/ regularly.

We expect to finalize a partnership in India by the end of the fiscal year to offer our MSM in Finance.

We completed the construction of a new flat multi-purpose classroom on the second floor that will be used for special classes/sessions.

We will complete the redesigns of the MBA, Executive MBA and Executive Doctor of Management curriculums.

The Weatherhead School of Management is a dynamic learning environment that is constantly changing. We invite you to visit and see the exciting changes we have made in the building. We also invite you to visit our web site to keep up with the changes within the School.

Warmest regards,

N. Mohan Reddy

Dean and Albert J. Weatherhead, III Professor of Management

Annual Fund Chair’s Message

Dear fellow alumni and friends,

Your gift matters. This is the one thought you should take away from the ongoing communication you receive from Weatherhead. As the Weatherhead Annual Fund Chair, I am delighted to honor the remarkable donors listed in this publication, both supporters of the Annual Fund and major gift benefactors. Our contributions directly impact the educational pursuits of our students by provid-ing the necessary support for the financial aid program – tuition only covers 80 percent of the cost of a Weatherhead education – and lay a strong financial foundation for generations to come. Every single gift, no matter the amount, has an immediate impact on the School because the alumni par-ticipation percentage affects our rankings. Thank you to all of our Annual Fund supporters.

In prior communication I have spoken of Weatherhead’s upward trajectory and the need for sup-port from all corners of the Weatherhead community. Many of you answered that call and joined behind Dean Reddy, the faculty, staff, and students in support of their efforts. As a direct re-sult, over 1,300 donors gave $506,692 to the Weatherhead Annual Fund, Moving Forward Fund, Dean’s Discretionary Fund, and EDM Advancement Fund from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. This dollar amount represents a 16 percent increase in attainment from the previous fiscal year. This is a shared success.

For those who needed to see a demonstration that there already exists a depth and breadth of commitment before making or increasing a contribution, I encourage you to reflect upon the extent of our success this past fiscal year. And, I hope you too find inspiration in those who have decided to be counted as supporters of the Weatherhead School of Management and its legacy.

Sincerely,

William H. Lewis, M.B.A./J.D. 1996Weatherhead Annual Fund Chair

About these listings

These lists recognize all the individuals, corporations and foun-dations that made a contribution (cash and cash equivalents) in support of the Weatherhead School of Management during fis-cal year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008).

Corporate matching gifts

For individuals whose companies provide a corporate match, the Weatherhead School gives recognition of the combined amount of personal and corporate matching gift, provided the matching gift was received within the same fiscal year.

The Weatherhead School of Management wishes to thank all of its donors for their thoughtfulness and generosity in supporting the Weatherhead School. Gifts to one of Weatherhead’s Annual Funds are distinguished from other sources of giving to the Weatherhead School because these contributions are unrestricted, made on an annual basis, and expended in the year they are received. By supplying a significant pool of unrestricted dollars, annual giving has enabled the Weatherhead School to initiate and pursue those opportunities that have earned the School its reputation as an innovator. Without alumni, corporate partners, parents, and friends, we could not maintain our high level of distinction. Our success is largely dependent upon your generosity. Thank you.

Weatherhead Faculty and Staff Annual Fund Donors

“I contribute to the Weatherhead School because in many ways it is my home. It is important to know that many of us who have found a home at Weatherhead manifest our support to our School’s success through our commitment to its intangible and impressive “business as a noble profession” aspiration. Contributing large or small financially to the School demonstrates that we are also willing to give from our pockets for the greater good as well as from our hearts. In my view, that combination is the honor.”Retta HoldorfDepartment AdministratorWeatherhead School of Management

Inter-Disciplinary Teaching - A Part of the Core

The Weatherhead School of Management is home to a number of multidisciplinary centers of learning which bring together diverse viewpoints to broaden our research, teaching, and service to the community surrounding some of the most challenging issues in business today. These initiatives invite participation and embody key philosophies of the School. They also evolve and grow in a manner different from the academic programs, reaching out across Weatherhead and bringing together expanded trans-departmental resources to create new courses, new majors and minors, and broadened research funding. Two themes will be present throughout the curriculum for years to come – Sustainability and World Betterment, and Manage by Designing.

Sustainability and World Betterment Manage by Designing

We recognize that society is entering a new era of creative capi-talism in which sustainable value creation is emerging as the business opportunity of the 21st Century. While corporations surge ahead with plans to become more socially conscious, Weatherhead is at the forefront of teaching methods for achiev-ing measureable results that positively affect society, the envi-ronment, and a company’s bottom line. Two crucial concepts -- social entrepreneurship and sustainable value – help advance business priorities, spur innovation, and create unique sources of competitive advantage. Social entrepreneurship seeks to im-prove societal conditions by addressing and solving problems through entrepreneurial skills and business models, while sus-tainable value involves capturing new opportunities by integrat-ing eco-innovation and social entrepreneurship into industry supply chains and the core individual business strategy.

Weatherhead has embedded these concepts into its curriculum and is putting them into practice. Weatherhead’s sustainable value approach has helped put more than 20 large business-es on the sustainability map including Fairmount Minerals, Wal-Mart, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, among others.

Weatherhead recognizes that the art of design is increasing-ly important to the practice of management. Our world needs leaders who observe with fresh eyes, conceive and model new possibilities, experiment with alternatives, implement and re-fine best ideas, and continue to question existing conditions in search of betterment for individuals, organizations, and society. As a result, Weatherhead is spearheading the concept Man-age by Designing -- the integration of design thinking, design skills, and design experiences -- into its MBA curriculum. Our students learn to sketch new alternatives, see through problem situations, overcome traditional boundaries, prototype ideas, and iterate in productive ways.

Design skills and methods enable managers to respond to com-plex situations creatively, holistically, and productively. Weath-erhead graduates approach problems with the belief that they can do better than what has been done before. We teach that “best practices” are not good enough, and that it is possible to improve on familiar solutions in surprising and valuable ways. Our graduates blend critical and creative skills. They are able to recognize and avoid default solutions, and replace the trap of “either...or” thinking with the possibility of “both...and” thinking. It is this unique design attitude that distinguishes Weatherhead graduates, enabling them to create value.

tion, visit our web site at http://weatherhead.case.edu/initiatives/.

Endowed Scholarships (continued)

“Thank you for your tremendous generosity and support of the Donald Wolfe Scholarship Fund in the Ph.D. Program in Organizational Behavior. The last phases of a Ph.D. program are very demanding both financially and emotionally, and it is, in a great part, because of this gift, that I felt supported, and recognized and allowed to not worry about financial day to day matters and focus on my data collection and analysis work, and be able to do good quality academic work of value for the field of organizational behavior.”

Harry Cashy (MACC ‘86) his wife, Dr. Maria Misthos established The Cashy Family Schol-arship as a tribute to the transformative impact of a Weatherhead experience. Harry credits his success on his chosen path to the great education he received; he credits his realization that he could create his own path to the caring interest of his professors in the Master of Accountancy program. “They taught me how to look toward the future and develop my personal vision,” he says. “They taught not only accounting, business, and finance, but also how to develop a life.” As Harry’s success increased, setting up the Scholarship was a very personal way to thank the people, the institution, and the pro-gram he feels gave him his start. He remains personally involved, taking the time to meet the scholarship recipients and hear what they would like to do with their lives. He says,

“I always come away from these meetings with a renewed sense of excitement for what it is like to be young and have the whole world in front of you. And also, that this gift was absolutely the right thing to do.”

“The Cashy family’s contributions have given me a tremendous opportunity to take advantage of the academic strength of Case Western Reserve University. I am extremely appreciative of his commitment to students who wish to pursue an accounting education at The Weatherhead School of Management.” Danielle BlyStudentWeatherhead School of Management
