ACADEMY SUMMER HOURS ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN OLSCA EIGHTH GRADER?

By Brother Michael Renna, OFS—Chairperson

Recently, OLS held a blood drive to which many parishioners generously donated. When giving blood, you may also be told what type you are. Many people already know their blood type (A, B, O or AB) but how many are aware of how blood type is inherited? This problem will test that knowledge.

A young couple believes that their newborn infant may have accidentally been switched at the hospital. They think this because the mother is blood type A and the father is blood type B but the baby is blood type O. Is this situation possible or has the wrong baby been sent home with the couple? Explain your answer.

(Answer will be provided next week)

Blood type in humans is determined by two genes, one inherited from each parent. There are in fact three different genes called alleles which govern blood type. They are designated as follows:

IA which determines blood type A IB which determines blood type B and i which determines blood type O

The first two genes (A and B) are dominant over O and co-dominant to each other. The gene for type O is recessive—it is not expressed when either dominant gene is present. This means that if a person inherits an A gene from each parent, that person is type A OR if the person inherits an A gene from one parent and an O gene from the other, the person is still type A because A is dominant over O. The same exact thing applies to blood type B. If a person however, inherits an A gene from one parent and a B gene from the other, the person is type AB (codominance). So how does one inherit type O? Simple, you must inherit an O gene from each parent. In other words, to show the recessive trait (O), you must inherit BOTH recessive genes. So in this particular case, it is perfectly possible for a couple with types A and B to have a child with type O blood. Each parent has the dominant gene for their type as well as the recessive O gene which is NOT expressed. The child simply by random chance inherited both O genes from its parents. Just for the record, the probability of this occurring is 25%. The mother in this situation has the following genes: IAi and the father has the following genes: IBi. The baby has this gene makeup (genotype): ii. A little more biological jargon is in order. When the two genes for a trait are the same, that genotype is called homozygous. When the two genes for a trait are NOT the same, that genotype is called heterozygous. Here the mother and father are both heterozygous for blood type, but the baby is homozygous. Of course, nowadays, with all the medical technology available and the proper supervision, it is virtually impossible to go home with the wrong baby!!! (We would hope).

WARM WELCOME. If you are new to our parish

please feel free to introduce yourself to one of the

priests or deacons after Mass today. We kindly invite

you to come to the Parish Office and register as a

member of Our Lady of the Snows. Registration is

important for all parishioners because then we are able

to issue sponsor letters for

Baptism, Confirmation and Matrimony. We can also

give end of the year statements of your contributions

to the church through regular use of the envelopes.

We can also help you with letters of recommendation

for employment, school, etc. Your registration will

also help us with our parish census in knowing the

number of Catholics in Floral Park and surrounding

areas. Thank you and welcome!

THE TABLET. Any parishioner wishing to receive a

copy of our diocesan newspaper each

week is invited to contact the Parish

Office. Just leave your name and

address and you will be added to the

mailing list.

WELCOME!

seating in the church for the disabled and their

caregivers. Thank you for your consideration.

TD BANK PARISH FUNDRAISER. If you are

CLOTHING DRIVE. The St. Vincent de Paul truck

will be at Our Lady of the Snows on Saturday,

September 15th from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon. Now is

the time to search the drawers and closets for clothing

items, clean and in good shape,

to help those less fortunate.

We kindly ask you to bring the

clothing on that day only and

the St. Vincent de Paul Society

in the parish thanks you for

your donations.
