Pastoral Letter

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Just the other day, June 25th to be exact, I received an e-mail from my Dad wishing me a Happy Leon Day. My first thought was “Who is Leon, and why are we celebrating him?” Later that night (after allowing the e-mail to sink deep down in my inbox) I went over to his house to have dinner with him and my Mom. To my surprise, there was a string of Christmas lights around his door. So with the biggest eye roll I could muster, I walked in and asked him what on earth was with the Christmas Lights and who is Leon? So let me help you better digest this. Leon day might look better if I type it as leoN, or maybe if I change the order: Noel! I was as shocked as you to learn the Leon Day is exactly half way to Christmas and it’s Noel spelled backwards. Now if you’re as appalled as I am, you are now scratching your head wondering why I am writing to you about Christmas in a Pastoral letter dated July 7, 2019. As crazy as it sounds, the whole “Leon Day” celebration that my Dad had jumped on the bandwagon with, made me truly think. Once again, as it is every year, we are halfway to Christmas and there is much work to do. In today’s gospel (Luke 10) it says “The Harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” In the coming months, and of course throughout advent, there are many great gifts revealed to us. HIS harvest is certainly abundant among us, but are there enough of us to gather up that harvest and spread the good news? Take a moment and think about how you can help receive the abundance through prayer, stewardship, and discipleship. How can we as Catholics go out and find more laborers so that the abundance can be received by many. As we move through the summer months, take time to experience the many gifts that summer affords us including our freedom, thanks to those who have served our Country with great honor. Also take time to reflect how you can be a laborer and prayerfully reflect on how the Holy Spirit calls upon you to help spread the message of Jesus Christ!

The Meaning of Patriotism Authentic love of country demands that we recognize God as the source of our

liberties and seek what is good By Archbishop William E. Lori (Supreme Chaplain)

On July 4, Independence Day, the United States celebrates the anniversary of its birth and Americans recall the ringing words of the Declaration of Independence, penned by Thomas Jefferson: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These are words that have inspired generations of Americans and kindled the aspirations of freedom-loving people everywhere in the world. This year, the Fourth of July again marks the completion of the Fortnight for Freedom, a two-week period designated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for Catholic citizens to reflect on the importance of religious freedom and to work toward preserving it not only in the United States, but also in so many parts of the world where people suffer persecution for their faith. LOVE OF COUNTRY Independence Day and the Fortnight of Freedom have special meaning for the Knights of Columbus. One of the Order’s core principles — in addition to charity, unity and fraternity — is patriotism, or love of one’s country. While all Knights are called to love their native land, the principle of patriotism is associated in a special way with the Fourth Degree. Every time I am blessed to have an honor guard at Mass or the chance to take part in activities organized by a Fourth Degree assembly, I am reminded of how many Knights and their families have fought and worked to defend freedom. The Knights of Columbus contributes to the good of society by fostering authentic patriotism, which does not mean that we love our country regardless of right or wrong. Rather, it means that we love our country so much that we want it to embrace what is true and good. We want our country to be a place where human dignity is recognized and respected from conception until natural death, a place where religious freedom is robustly fostered, not just tolerated. Out of love for country we are vigilant, lest our freedoms be unduly curtailed for political reasons. We likewise work to defend marriage and the family because we recognize how these institutions strengthen civil society. This same love of country also prompts us to reach out to those in need and to welcome those who come to our shores seeking a better life, much as our ancestors did.
