But motherRhian Hughes of Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England, founda way to stay close to her son Harry. She secretly took up figureskating, something Harry loves to do. While training with aninstructor was grueling, Rhian soon was able to perform a routine, which she tricked Harry into seeing. He was very impressed, and now Harry, Rhian, and the rest of the family go skatingtogether regularly, cementing the parent-child bond.Say “Yes” to the dress: A woman from Adelaide,Australia, is tired of consumerism. After visiting India, TammyHall came home and decided stop buying new clothes and tobe happy with what she had for at least a year. She didn’thave any trouble doing that, but she did have trouble with thethought of spending a large sum of money for her weddingdress, which she would wear for only a day. To avoid thiswasteful practice, she started wearing the dress everywhereafter her wedding day. That includes hiking trails, basketballcourts, the gym, and even the voting station. She plans tocontinue saying “Yes” to the dress!Garden solution: If you want to get rid of a nest of bugs inyour backyard, don’t use gasoline and a match. That’s whatCesar Schmitz discovered. His wife didn’t want the bugs to eather lovely garden on their property in Enéas Marques, insouthern Brazil. So, with an audience of two pet dogs, Schmitzpoured gas into the bug nest and tried unsuccessfully to light itwith a match. Finally, on the third try, the gas ignited. Sod fleweverywhere and the dogs took off on a run. Luckily, Schmitzwas in a safe place, but he had to replant the garden!Nose for golf balls: The elderly Barry Gell of Dunfermline,Fife, Scotland, loves playing golf, and he never has to buy golfballs. That’s because he trained his collie, Jess, to sniff out lostballs on the golf courses in the area. Over a 12-year period,Jess has found more than 50,000 balls, some even buried inmud. The smart pooch never nabs one that’s in play, only lostones. Gell uses some of the balls and gives some away, but hestill has so many that he doesn’t know what to do with themall. Jess has even discovered antique golf balls lost decadesago by golfers.

Your Weekly Horoscope
Lucky numbers this week: This week’s odds favor Aries winners
with the luckiest number being 8.
Did You Know...Olive origins: The scientific name for olive trees is Olea
europea. These trees can live for hundreds of years. The olive
fruit is not eaten right off the tree, as it is too bitter. Olives are
eaten after being cured.Accidental toy: The Slinky toy was invented by Richard
James in 1943. A naval engineer, James was trying to use
springs to find a way to keep fragile devices steady during use
on ships. When he accidentally knocked over a spring, he saw
its potential as a toy.Painting in blue: When Spanish artist Pablo Picasso
(1881-1973) was in his early twenties, he went through his
“Blue Period” of painting. During this time, he used various
shades of blue as the dominant color in his work. Sled dog: The Chinook dog breed originated in the state of
New Hampshire (US) in the early 1900s. A cross between a
farm dog and a husky, Chinooks are gentle and intelligent,
and were originally bred to pull sleds.Standing tall: The highest mountain in the Western
Hemisphere is Cerro Aconcagua, or “Rock Sentinel.” Part of
the Andes Mountain Range in the Province of Mendoza
(Argentina), Aconcagua stands approximately 6,960 meters
(22,835 feet) above sea level.
On the Lighter SideMiddle age is when the narrow waist and the broad mind
begin to change places. Judge: “I’ll have order in this court! Order in this court!”Plaintiff: “I’ll have a hamburger with onions.”How do you milk an ant? First you get a very low stool….His trouble is too much bone in the head and not enough in
the back.Hard: an easy word that means difficult.

Everybody’s Talking!Eat and read: A café in the Zona Rosa district of Mexico Cityis not just a place to go for a meal. It is also a great location toread a book or to enjoy some greenery. Called Cafebrería elPéndulo, the café’s two levels offer a plethora of plants, as wellas many high shelves and piles of books. Also available are CDsand DVDs for music and movie-loving patrons. On the mainfloor, guests can dine at tables, while the second floor containscouches for reading and snacking. The café/bookstore is namedafter a giant pendulum that hangs from the ceiling. Visitors cangive it a push as they come and go.Honest woman: A bride-to-be in Birmingham, England, chose ethics over her fiancé when she found out about a robberyhe had committed. The thief, Steven Reid, along with anaccomplice, had broken into an elderly woman’s home, stealingseveral pieces of jewelry in the process. The loot included a ringthat Reid gave his girlfriend when he asked her to marry him.Unfortunately for Reid, his girlfriend was honest. She had seenmedia reports of the crime, including pictures of the ring, andturned him in. The thief ended up with jail time.White sand: In Australia, Whitehaven Beach is located onWhitsunday Island in the Coral Sea, off the coast ofQueensland. Like its name, this beach is very white. That’sbecause the sand is made of almost pure silica, which is whiterand of finer texture than the sand found on other beaches. When walking on this seven-kilometer (4.3-mile) stretch ofshoreline in bare feet, the sand is said to feel like velvet. Andbeachgoers don’t have to worry about the sand being too hot;silica does not retain heat as well as other beach sands. To keepthe beach pristine, dogs and cigarettes are not allowed.Brothers by birth: Playing together as children and growing upto be best friends for life, two men in Hawaii (US) were amazed tofind out, after knowing each other for more than 60 years, thatthey are biological brothers. The two are Alan Robinson, who wasadopted, and Walter Macfarlane, who was raised by his mother butdidn’t know his father. Unbeknownst to each other, the brothersstarted searching for answers to their ancestry, and they coinciden-tally used the same specialized website. Turns out they have thesame biological mother. Both were overwhelmed, but happy toannounce the news to family and friends.
