February is a very important time for the residents of Heritage Pines. It is when we, the residents, have the opportunity to contribute to the future of this community by voting in the upcoming HPCA Board of Directors election at our annual meeting on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. This year we have five candidates vying for three open positions. It is essential for every resident to obtain as much information on each candidate as possible in order to make an informed decision at election time. The second optional Candidate’s Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Both are scheduled at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Remember it is the responsibility of ALL of us as voting residents and members of this community to contribute to the future of this community. We only have this chance once a year.

Following this message, are the resumes of the five candidates: Joseph Bratt, Jim Kelley, Linda McCann, Ken Nelson, and Val Page.

Board Updates

Messages From The Management

The Board is moving forward with our search for a new General Manager. Val Page and Linda McCann are co-chairing the committee with a total of thirteen residents participating. Sub-committees were established to review resumes, create interview questions, check references, run background checks, and more. We want to take our time and make sure it is done correctly. We also have been looking into selecting an Interim GM.

Workshops are being planned in several areas such as the kitchen expansion, golf course renovation, road renovation, and recycled water long-range planning.

The Golf Advisory Committee has met with Kevin Burnsworth and associates of Ron Garl. Ron Garl was the original designer of our golf course, but he was never allowed to complete the course as proposed. After touring the course, the company is making recommendations to the Golf Committee and to the Board about where they believe improvements should be made. This will be a multi-year plan.

The committee for the use of recycled water is looking into the feasibility of using the recycled water for some or all of Heritage Pines. We have met with Pam Wright of the Pasco County Water Department who has applied for a grant which is available to us through Swiftmud to pursue the use of recycled water in Heritage Pines. This will be an intensive study with long-range plans exploring all of our options. The results of this study probably will not be seen until 2013 based upon the Pasco County plans.

Linda McCann, Board Secretary

Can You Hear Me Now?As part of a new initiative to provide residents with complimentary services here at HP, management is now working with a local business, Affordable Hearing Solutions, to provide the following complimentary services for residents:

• Video Otoscopy examination to check for Ear Wax• Ear Wax Removal• Hearing Screenings• Clean and Check hearing aids• One Complimentary Pack of Hearing Aid Batteries

(In-home Hearing Evaluations available at no chargeby appointment only)

thThe first session will be held on Monday, February 20 beginning at 1:00 p.m. and running until 3:00 p.m. The clinic will be held in the Conference Room. A sign-up sheet will be at the front desk for appointments in 10 minute intervals. We anticipate a great response from this service, and have made preparations to make it a monthly service! Again, if you wish to take advantage of this complimentary service, you must sign up in advance through the front desk.

Notes From The Architectural Review Committee

We are going to talk about paint this month. There has been a lot of talk about house paint

colors. And I mean a lot of talk, emails, etc. We, as a committee, are not out to make enemies.

When you decide to paint your house, the first thing you do is go to the front desk and pick up the paint

color book. The colors in the book are Sherwin Williams and the colors in the brochure in the front pocket are Scott paint colors. Do the very best you can to pick a color pallet from these colors. You can go to outside vendors for colors too, but just remember that they must be the same or very similar to the colors in the book. But what if the color you want isn't there, what do you do? What you can do is present your color choices to the committee and the committee will go through the book and brochure and try to find very similar colors. If the colors you pick are just a shade lighter or darker, there is a chance the committee will approve. No promises, but we will try. If the colors you chose are way off from the colors in the book, they will not be approved.

Please keep in mind; even though we live in a deed-restricted community you might not care for the color your neighbor has picked for his house. At least here in Heritage Pines we will stay with the earth tone colors. You won't see any shocking pink, purple, or neon green houses here which is something to be thankful for.

Here are the items we recycle:Cardboard

NewspaperCooking Oil

Fluorescent Light bulbsHousehold Batteries

Aluminum Cans(Please break down boxes before putting into container)

If the containers are full, do not leave items on ground by containers, as this turns into a mess, and can be blown around the area by wind. If Blue newspaper container is full you can use green cardboard container as well. If you are recycling shredded paper, it needs to be bagged when put into container. Again, this is because of the mess that can be created down there. Please do not leave items in recycling area that we do not recycle. Containers in fenced area are for Clubhouse use only. Additional cardboard and newspaper containers are located in front of RV Lot on Stable Gate Drive.

Is your Gazebo Park brick color-damaged?

Many of the bricks purchased by residents and placed in the walkways at Gazebo Park have become color-damaged, probably due to the use of reclaimed water and sprays as well as not being properly sealed. If your brick has become unreadable, you may get it replaced from our new brick vendor who will guarantee the work. Here is the procedure:

1. Come to Gazebo Park Thursday, February 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. OR Tuesday, February 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to identify your brick and fill out a new form. Your replacement brick must have the same wording as your original brick.

2. Bring a check (no cash, credit cards or club cards) for $20 made out to HPCA. Write “Environmental Solutions Fund” on the memo line.

3. If you wish to change the wording on your replacement brick, the charge will be $25 as this will be considered a new brick.

4. Be advised that your replacement brick may not be placed in the spot where it is now located.

Did you use your Blue Bag?

In January the Environmental Issues Committee teamed up with Pasco County to distribute to our residents information about our county recycling program and a blue bag. Heritage Pines has welcomed a number of new residents in recent months and we hope the information was helpful to you.

Remember to place in the blue bags rinsed metal cans, rinsed glass containers, and plastic containers with #1 and #2 on the bottom. You can also recycle household and hearing aid batteries at the cart barn in a blue container. No car or golf cart batteries, please. There is a container for cooking oil that the county will recycle into fuel for their fleet of vehicles. Place aluminum soda and beer cans in the trailer. We also take all newsprint, paper and cardboard. So, you can recycle all your cardboard boxes, but it is very important to crush them as flat as possible. This is very simple if you cut the tape on the bottom of the box. It will fold down to make it more manageable. This item is so popular that we now have a new recycling area open by the back gate inside the RV storage yard on Heritage Point Drive. Currently the site is taking only paper and cardboard but we are hoping by the time this is published we will have another container for newsprint.

Keep up the good work. We have all benefited from your recycling efforts. Just look around our community and see all the good works we have done with recycling funds. We have purchased the green benches located thru out the community; we helped to developed Paleo Park; and check out our new rain barrel behind the gazebo in Gazebo Park. Look around and you will see the difference a few can make for the betterment of all. Let us know if you have any new suggestions for our committee. COME TO OUR NEXT MEETING OR SEND AN EMAIL. WE ARE HAPPY TO LISTEN TO EVERYONE.

Community/Memorial Tree ProgramThe Community/Memorial Tree Program provides the opportunity for our residents to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or friend. Trees may also be purchased to honor a person or because you wish to donate one in your name to beautify our community. Prices vary according to the type and size of tree. Residents may choose a general location for a donated tree which can be on the golf course, along the main boulevard or in other areas of the community. The final placement of each tree will be approved by our golf course superintendent, Tommy Land. Trees will be planted during the months of March/April and October/November. Please plan your purchase during the preceding months.

A map showing the location of all donated trees is located in the hallway by the Magnolia Room. The Community/Memorial Tree Program is headed by Linda O'Leary. Please contact Linda at 819-9207 for pricing information.

A book is being kept at the front desk of the Clubhouse in which residents can look through for the many trees planted throughout the community. Each page includes the name of the honoree(s), sponsor(s), tree location, and type of tree. This book will remain at the front desk for all of the community to view.

Sponsored by the Golf Advisory Committee.

Beverly, Ann and Stan Ely wish to thank the two Bridge Clubs, Bible Studies and friends for their contributions to the Community/Memorial Tree Program. A tree will be planted in our Mother, Elizabeth Vigil's, memory

Happening at the House

Beer OfThe Month!

UNCOMPROMISED & UNFILTERED

Meet the beer that started it all. Our naturally cloudy flagship brew

starts with the highest quality wheat. It's bold, clean flavor and pronounced citrus and floral aromas are what define American-style Hefeweizen. So pour yourself a cool, cloudy glass, finish with a lemon and enjoy the original.

Appearance: Orange-ish, yellow straw in color. Cloudy (as it should be). Nice thick creamy white head.

Smell: Very light. Yeasty (slightly bready). No hops.

Taste: Wheat; grainy. Yeast, but not so much. Like a good light wheaty bread; has that creamy wheaty flavor that (to me) marks it as the "American hefe." Not fruity (like a traditional hefe would be) but grainy. Hops are so mild as to blend into the background. Bitterish, but no aftertaste. Very clean tasting.

Mouthfeel: Thirst-quenching, nice body that rolls around the mouth. Creamy texture from the yeast.

Spring Community Garage Saleth Saturday, March 24 • 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

$15.00 per home(with a catch!)

It’s that time of year to clean out your closets, and quit being such a pack rat! We are once again putting together the Heritage Pines Community Spring Garage Sale. This is always a big event for this community, with nearly 175 homes participating the past two years. This event is heavily publicized in local media outlets, including newspapers and radio ads. Because of the influx of outsiders and traffic, additional guards are put at the guardhouse, as well as roaming patrols all day. Every home participating is indicated on a community map which is handed out to every vehicle that enters, and are also available to residents the day before. Our goal, is to get as much exposure to every home participating that we can. Hence the cost.

One complaint we have always received year after year, was the pesky balloons and having to come up so early in the morning to get them. Well, we are doing away with the balloons, and opting for a more simple approach. We are having very simple “Heritage Pines Community Garage Sale, Registered Home” signs made this year. As part of the $15.00 fee, each home participating will be “renting” the signs for the day. When the signs are returned to the Clubhouse, each participant will be credited back $5.00.

Signs will be given out the week prior to the garage sale, and returned after the sale is over (both Saturday & Sunday). This is going to be a much more efficient way for residents to participate without having to leave their homes the morning of the sale. Yes the fee has increased, but we will be going above and beyond to make sure you get that back many times over.

Q: I am a Verizon FIOS customer with a MSN email address. I received an email telling me that

my MSN Premium subscription is being terminated effective March1,

2012. The email states that I can keep this service by paying an additional fee to MSN to keep my email address. Is this necessary?

A: You do not have to pay an additional fee to retain your email address unless you also want to continue using the MSN Premium service. This includes an Antivirus subscrip-tion and the MSN software sometimes referred to as the Butterfly software. Your FIOS Internet charge will continue to provide you with Internet connectivity and access to your MSN email. There is no need to pay a fee if all you need is email.

You will need to follow the instructions included in the notification email regarding transitioning your Favorite Web sites. You should also check your MSN screen for a “Folders on My Computer” section. If this section exists you will need to move the emails you want to retain to the “Folders on MSN” section. If you don't do this you will lose these messages when you MSN Premium subscription

stexpires on March 1 .

After completing the transfer you may begin accessing your email account via the Hotmail website. I'd suggest verify-ing that your INBOX and SENT folders contain the same email messages you see when viewing your email via the MSN software. You should also check for the email folders moved using the previous instructions. Finally, verify that your address book is complete.

If you were using the MSN provided antivirus software, you will need to install a replacement. I'd suggest Microsoft Security Essentials which is free and can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site.

If you don't plan to pay for the MSN Premium service, you should make the switch to Hotmail as soon as possible in case you need support from MSN.

Q: I received a new Cable Box from my provider and the new remote only has two device buttons instead of the 4 on my old remote. I currently use this remote to control my TV and DVD player. How can I make the new remote control these two devices?

A: The new remotes can only control two devices, your TV and the Cable Set Top Box. There is nothing you can do to make the new remote control your DVD player.

The good news is that if you haven't already sent back your old remote, you will find that it should continue to operate the new Cable Box, TV and DVD player. If you've already sent back the remote, you will need to use the remote that originally came with the DVD player to control it. I have solved this problem, for my clients, with a remote that controls up to 5 devices..

Everyone is Welcome to Attend Our Trips

Angels in the PinesMeets Sundays at 1 p.m. in the craft room. The first and third Sundays are our knitters and crochetters and the second and fourth Sunday are our sewers.

What a great year we had last year. Nearly 400 children received hats, scarfs and gloves, our baby shower overwhelmed the Domestic Violence Shelter with joy, the clothing drive in the spring time filled the shelter to point the they couldn't find room for everything right away. The women there never had such lovely items in their lives before. Our good efforts have helped the shelter obtain matching grants for the sum of over $23,000 .

But let's not forget our special Angels at the Angelus home. Our sewers worked on making them bibs for the residents and we were happy to help give them 250 new bibs and wipe cloths for their daily use. We also supplied them with hats and scarves.

If you want to join a great group, relearn an old skill or a new one or help in any way come on down any Sunday and join Our Angels. Every year our wings keep getting larger so watch out for flying feathers.

There is a great need for skeins of yarn and cash donations so we can continue our good works. If you can help out, please call Kathy Hendrickson at 862-2394.

Book ClubthThe Heritage Pines Book Club meets on the 4

Wednesday of each month. On Wednesday, February nd22 we'll convene in the Magnolia Room at 10:30 a.m.

Francine Raggi-Collins will lead us in discussion of Beloved by Toni Morrison – Historical Fiction –Mythic in scope, Beloved is “an attempt to grapple with the legacy of slavery. Morrison based her novel on a real-life incident, in which an escaped slave woman who faced recapture made a heartbreaking sacrifice rather than allow her children to be taken back into slavery. “The novel powerfully portrays the meaning of what it is like to be owned by another, and the difficulty of owning oneself.” Winner of both Nobel and Pulitzer prizes.

Following the discussion, members will adjourn to the Dining Room for lunch and more “book talk”.

The reading schedule for the next two months is:

March 28, 2012- Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay - Barbara Sachs

April 25, 2012 - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Astrid Elliott

Everyone in the community is welcome, so please come and join our fascinating discussions. If anyone has any questions about the Book Club, please call Judith Chase at 862-4545. Happy reading!

A Very Special WAG OutingOn Friday, February 24, at 11:30, Kevin Howe, Chef at Dukes and former owner of County Line Cafe will provide a gourmet lunch and demonstration at Dukes. Cost is $23.00 which includes lunch, cooking demo, tax, tip and WAG dues. Spouses and friends are welcome.

Kevin will prepare his pork recipe which he entered in a contest on the Regis Philbin show in NYC. We will have sesame lime ginger pork, potatoes, vegetables and salad. He will demonstrate and serve his Key Lime Pie for dessert with coffee or tea. He will give us the recipes. Kevin will speak about food and his experiences and show a film clip of his appearance on the Regis TV show. Sign up and leave a check in the WAG book in the Library.

The History of WAG and Hope Ranch

WAG was started about 10 years ago as an alternative to golf for all women at HP. Since then we opened our membership to anyone who is not on the golf course the day of the meeting. We have traveled the state and eaten in dozens of wonderful restaurants and have had great speakers. Our dues and money raised for more then 7 years goes to help the 14 girls who live at Hope Ranch.

Hope Ranch, a non profit organization, was started 8 years ago to fill a need for a home for teenage girls who could no longer live at home. They range in age from 11 to 16 years old. They receive love, education, care and training to prepare them for adulthood. WAG supplies them with specially decorated birthday cakes, Christmas presents, theme park passes, and other social activities. WAG has them to lunch at HP and then Kevin teaches them how to hit golf balls at the driving range. HP residents have given Hope Ranch furniture, golf clubs and a golf cart.

A group of us is trying to save WAG and continue our support for Hope Ranch. Please help us by joining us February 24 and on our other outings.

Thank you. Doreen Engle, 819-9012.

What are we doing about the record number of homeless people in Pasco County??

Homelessness is the highest it has been since the Great Depression. There are thousands of homeless people in Pasco County, and they are just like you and me but for a few circumstances. They lost their job and then their home to foreclosure and were put out on the street (most Floridians have less than a month's cost of living expenses in savings.). Many are families with school age children. As recently featured on 60 Minutes, Florida leads the nation in the number of homeless children.

Please join us on Thursday, February 16, when we welcome guest speaker Kim Bogart, candidate for Pasco County Sheriff. Mr. Bogart is a leader in helping our homeless citizens of Pasco. He will discuss the response to homelessness in Pasco County and his work with the Florida Coalition for the Homeless.

Our Club membership drive continues, and we welcome new people who are interested in making a difference, or just want to exchange ideas with like-minded folks. We encourage all HP Democrats to attend, and see what we're all about!

For information, call any of our officers: Dr. Lynn Lindeman, President – 697-3052; Dr. Larry Schmitt, Vice-President –869-2493; Judith Chase – Secretary – 862-4545; Oma Spain, Treasurer – 863-3962.“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has” ~ Margaret Mead

Library NewsOur library is maintained by volunteers from the H.P. Book Club. Any one interested in volunteering can call Jocelyn at 869-9461. We gratefully accept donations of POPULAR hard back books and GENTLY USED paperbacks. Fiction books are on the right hand wall in alphabetical order by author. Non-fiction books are on the left hand wall by subject category. Paperbacks are found in the lower four corners in alphabetical order by author. Large Print books are on the left hand wall of the library. Leave donations and returns on the book cart. Since space is of a premium, we can only keep books of wide appeal. Paperbacks do not need to be returned. We are getting requests for books on tapes for use in cars. Please donate them if you have extras. The library does not accept magazines, games, puzzles, technical books, movies or other non-book items.

Heritage Pines Sportsman's Club The next meeting of the Heritage Pines Sportsman's Club, which is always held on the second Thursday of each month will be on February 9th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Magnolia Room. All interested residents are invited to join us at the meeting and to learn about our many Club outdoor activities. We are an active and growing club.

The club had a very successful and enjoyable Christmas Party held at the Clubhouse. The HP staff did a great job. The decorations were very nice and the meal was excellent. Many thanks to members Mary Ward, Larry Pearlman and Susan for a fine job of collection, coordination and presentation of prizes.

The Sportsman's Club has run a very successful series of fishing trips. Call Roger Keplinger, (379-6571) or send email to: [email protected]) if interested in a fun fishing trip.

The Sportsman's Club, goes trap and skeet shooting on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Silver Dollar Shooting Club in Odessa, FL. Once in a while we go north to Crystal River and shoot at the Robinson's Ranch range. We carpool and gather at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot across from the clubhouse to organize the rides. If you don't own a gun and would like to try this sport, you can rent a gun at Silver Dollar for the day at a very reasonable rate. Along with our members we also have about 5 people from Timber Pines attending. As previously reported lessons are still being given at the Silver Dollar for Trap shooters for $40.00 per person. There are 2 instructors for each group of 5 shooters. One of the nice things that this group does is to enjoy a meal together after each shooting session. We delight in trying new restaurants and the latest find is the Grand Plaza Café on Little Rd and Rt 54.

We also have six members that are shooting Skeet. Skeet is a different game than Trap and requires a different set of shooting skills. The Sportsman's Club Coordinator for Trap and Skeet shooting is John Scarfi at 868-0640. You may find John a little quiet and hard to get talking, but he will gladly help you with your shooting needs if you prod him a little.

Pistol and Rifle Shooters are going as a group to the Phoenix Gun Club north of Brooksville. You should contact Harry Koerner at 378-5667 to find out more about this. Members are organizing in the parking lot once a month at 9 am to arrange carpools. You must be a member of the Phoenix gun club to shoot there. Costs are reasonable with a $25.00 annual fee with an additional $10.00 per day to shoot. There is a family plan for $200.00 a year with no additional charge to shoot. If you have any questions please contact Harry. He will give you more information than you will ever need.

Organized Bocce Ball and horseshoes is currently inactive, but will resume again as soon as interest picks up.

Kayaking is closed due to the cold weather. It will resume once the weather warms up.

Questions or more information----call Howard or Lorna at 819-8059. We meet at the parking lot across from the Clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. Hope you can join us for some good

exercise and a day of fun in the sun. Beginners or experienced, all are welcome.

We also very pleased to announce our new officers for 2012. The competition for offices was fierce, but after the struggle was over, the winners were:

President Harry KoernerVice President Roger KeplingerTreasurer Joann KoernerOfficial Secretary Howard Stringer

Please join us at our next meeting of the Heritage Pines Sportsman's Club and find out about all the outdoor fun we are enjoying. After each monthly meeting many of us get together for food and good conversation at a local restaurant. For more information on the club, contact our President, Harry Koerner at 378-5667.

Republican ClubThe next meeting of the Heritage Pines Republican Club will be held on Tuesday February 28, 2012. The guest speaker will be the always informative, Pasco County Superintendent of Schools, Heather Fiorentino. All Republicans need to be informed and involved in this most important election year. Please bring a friend or two.

Also, a reminder that if you have not paid your annual $10.00 dues, please do so at the meeting. Hope to see you all there.

Mah Jongg Club

If you are not a member of the Mah Jongg club and want to join, contact Lorna Colton at 819-8059 for membership. The dues are $5.00 a year. Make checks out to Lorna Colton and put your checks in the envelope in the Mah Jongg book.

Tuesday Ladies Bible Study

We invite all women interested in learning more about the life of David to join our Bible study on Tuesday mornings in the Magnolia Room of the Clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. We are half way through the Beth Moore study on David's life titled "David - Seeking a Heart Like His." This study includes a video presentation every other week, as well as having a workbook to use as a study guide.

We love having our discussions and learning something new each week. We encourage anyone that would enjoy the fellowship of other women to join us.

ATTENTION ALL CAT LOVERS - Please Join!

The membership of Kitty Coalition of Heritage Pines consists of residents who love cats. Most of us have cats who live with us indoors, but we all share a special love for the homeless cats who have never experienced human love, a warm bed, and regular meals. A stray cat is one who may have previously been a pet, but has become lost or abandoned. Pet abandonment is illegal, by the way. A feral cat is one who has never been socialized to humans.

Kitty Coalition of HP formed in March 2010 in order to humanely trap and neuter the strays and ferals who reside inside our gates. This will reduce the feral cat population by preventing births. We are an HP Club but we are now also a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Here is our ongoing 'need' list:

1. Donations: Your tax-deductible donations will cover vet bills and help with equipment purchases. We participate in the Spay Pasco program for feral and stray cats. Donations may be made at the Front Desk or directly to Kitty Coalition Board Members: Sherry Churchill, Lee Gebhardt, Marcia Letterer or Jackie Ruth. Food and supplies donations are quickly passed on to feral/stray cat adopters.

2. Foster Homes: We need loving temporary homes for kittens to become socialized. Right now we only have one foster home. This requires a cat lover who will work with the kittens to help them become used to human touch, in preparation for their permanent home. Fostering may be for a few days or for several weeks. Frequent travelers or snowbirds might be ideal foster homes when in residence at HP.

Pet Lovers’ Club

Programs for Future 2012 Pet Lovers' Club Meetings:

Monday, February 20, 201211:00 a.m., Heritage Pines Arts & Craft Room

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Stacy Wempe*, a local veterinarian, will discuss the growing need for preventive health care in our pets at our February 20 meeting. She, along with her husband, Dr. David Wempe, owns the Spring Hill Animal Clinic on Anderson Snow Road.

In her practice, she finds that, due to economic difficulties in families, many pet owners search for "cheap" vaccine clinics, which, in turn, cause some owners to forget the importance of health exams for their animal friends. These pets typically do not get the routine physicals and preventative care from these types of places.

Please join us for her informative and educational power-point presentation on a Health Wellness Plan for all of our loving pets. This will be followed by an informal round table of questions and answers.

* Dr. Stacy is the mother of four and the daughter of Heritage Pines residents, Dennis and Margo Driscoll.

My name is Cherie Burch and I want to tell you about a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier my husband Steve and I own. Rugby was born outside of Sheboygan, WI in 1998 and came to us as a baby. Rugby was a pile of fur and looked like a mahogany colored teddy bear. He was and still is a big boy for his breed. After all of the other dogs we have owned, his breed was just what we were looking for. Wheatens or Wheaties as their owners call them, are medium sized, well-muscled dogs that don't shed. They are loyal to their families and Rugby gets along with every person and animal he meets. If you have read anything about Terriers, you know they are bred to be independent and really need training starting at a young age. Rugby opened up a whole new world of dog ownership for us. He began obedience training at 10 weeks which led to agility training and showing in obedience, agility and rally. He indirectly led us to showing in conformation dog shows and breeding Wheatens. And he is a Canine Good Citizen and a retired certified therapy dog.

While we lived in Wisconsin, Rugby's favorite pastimes were "helping" me mow the lawn by running next to the tractor, walking by Lake Michigan and going to the dog training club each day for a workout. His main claim to fame is his tongue. All Wheatens want to taste your breath but Rugby will lick your face off given half a chance. Now that he is 13 1/2 years old, he likes to have help getting on our bed and lounging on our pillows.

As far as Rugby is concerned, any other dog in the family should just go back where it came from. They are irrelevant to him unless, of course, he wants to play. Steve and I belong to him, just ask him. He had a great agility career with me, completing 7 titles and at one time had a streak of 14 agility qualifying runs. If you ever want to know about agility, just ask either Steve or myself.

With his wonderful personality, Rugby has been a great ambassador for his breed and a loved member of our family. After all, even at his age he is still my "baby dog".

Valentine Doggie TreatsA perfect snack for all of our 4-legged friends.

Ingredients: ½ cup unsweetened applesauce; 1 egg; ½ cup natural peanut butter; 1 tsp. vanilla; 1 ¼ cups water; 4 cups whole-wheat flour; ½ cup cornmeal; ½ cup quick-cook oats; ¼ cup chopped peanuts

Instructions: 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2) In a large mixing bowl, combine applesauce, egg, peanut butter, vanilla and water. 3) In a second bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, oats and peanuts. 4) Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well. 5) Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until thoroughly mixed together. Roll out dough to ¼ -inch thick and cut out shapes. 6) Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes. Cool on a rack before serving. 7) Store in a sealed container. Makes 30 delicious doggie delights!
