Mr. Mueller is an author. Ourpupil made an interview withhim. He gave us informationabout his book with the titleLivin`in the past. It is notpublished until yet.We shorten

    the interview.

.1971 I was on a trip toBerlin with a group of youngboys and girls of our parish. We want to fly from Hanoverto Berlin. If the young blondgirl sitting next to me crossedmy eyes , I had this kind offeeling again and again. It wasthe first time I want to attractmy Pretty girl. But the loud-speaker always gave us im-

portant information about theBoeing 727 and why our Ger-man Lufthansa was not al-lowed to go to Berlin. Prettygirl was more important than

..West-Berlin our sting in thecommunist world.. The loud-speaker was really annoying.I was sixteen.Suddenly a bigbang. Air crash -???

Everybody was terrified.Pretty woman was crying. The loudspeaker starts itsexplanation: Dont be fright-ened, the Reds (communists)wants to say hello, that is ourcountry and West-Berlin be-longs to us. We had to passcold basements as charmingas slaughterhouses. Big sol-diers with machine guns anddogs monitored every move-ment with their stony faces.Do they hate us? One guy

had a question but he got noanswer. Only one big womanbarked: Hurry up, hurry upWe were forced to change 25West Marks/per day (todays

value 25 Euros) into theircurrency and got back 25East Marks (todays value 8Euros). A good bargain forthem. Suddenly two big po-licemen jumped to the youngmen just in front of me. Asoldier with a machine guncame very close to us. Theypulled the man behind a greycurtain. We couldnt see himanymore. What happened? Iasked a man just behind me.But he only whispered: Bequiet dont care, that hap-pens several times aday. (continued page 3)

Position and course of the Berlin Wall and its border control checkpoints (1989)

The houses contained between the fences were razed and the inhabitantsrelocated, thus establishing the No Man's Land that la became known as

. The No Man's Land was covered with raked gravel, rendering footprintseasy to notice thus enabling officers to see which guards had neglected their task;[45]

it offered no cover; most important, it offered clear s of fire for the wall guards.Through the years, the Berlin Wall evolved through four versions:

    1. Wire fence (1961)2. Improved wire fence (19621965)3. Concrete wall (19651975)4. (Border Wall 75) (19751989)The "fourth-generation wall", known officially as "Sttzwandelement UL12.11" (retaining wall element UL 12.11), was the final and most sophisticated ver-

sion of the Wall. Begun in 1975 and completed about 1980,

The top of the wall was lined with a smooth pipe, intended to make it more difficult to scale. It was reinforced by mesh fencing, signalfencing, anti-vehicle trenches, barbed wire, dogs on long lines, "beds of nails" underbalconies hanging over the "death strip", over 116 watchtowers, and 20 bunkers. This version of the Wall is the one most com-monly seen in photographs, and surviving fragments of in Berlin and elsewhere around the world are generally piecesof the fourth-generation Wall. The layout came to resemble the inner-German border in most technical aspects, except the Ber-lin Wall had no landmines and no Spring-guns.German team

The Berlin Wall was more than 140 kilometers (87 mi) long. In June 1962, a s ec -
