& Accessie as the editor of a magazine devoted to blooms for your big day, i get sent many of your weddings to look at for inspiration, and my team and i love nothing more than to pour over the ideas you have. i’m a huge fan of the trend for styling a wedding like a photo shoot, whether your venue provides its own

decorative ceremony backdrop, or you source eclectic pieces of furniture from local hire companies, there are always so many wonderful photo opportunities – especially when flowers are added. Turn to our real-life weddings section (starting on page 35), where you can learn how to recreate these ideas for yourself with our get-the-look shopping pages. Wedding flowers have come a long way since the 1920s and ’30s – turn to our Retro Star Style feature (page 22) to see how bridal bouquet trends have changed over the years. Work out your floral spend in Blooming Budgets (page 26), make selections according to the time of year in The Four Seasons (page 28) and finally, decide on your favourite flower type in Classic Vs. If you’ve chosen a venue which has gardens with bountiful flora, this is perfect for making the most of your outdoor setting. Layered with rich berry hues and contrasting pastels, the wild floral arrangements are what really bring this look to life. “Hartley Botanica Nursery, with its lush vines and tall, wispy trees provided a whimsical, dream-like setting for this styled shoot,” says florist Adrienne of The Bloom Of Time. “The flowers we chose to complement this were a play on colour and texture – pairing romantic peonies, dahlias and garden roses with more textured and unusual bouvardia, smokebush, viburnum berries and deep purple artichokes, and displaying them in hanging vintage frames.” Mismatched wooden furniture, brass candlesticks and coloured glass goblets will all contrast with the natural setting, giving your day an eclectic, modern-vintage feel. Create a similar-looking dessert table to the one pictured with an antique cabinet. Brush with chalk paint and showcase cakes and cookies, and retro floral-inspired cocktails served in vintage coups. The wildflower west

Ensure your flowers pop against dark green foliage

and, of course, nothing says ‘western’ quite like a few feathers.

It’s not for wallflowers, but a barn venue set on a working farm is the perfect opportunity to wow your guests with a vibrant western theme. Draw inspiration from this styled reception concept and combine wooden furnishings and natural materials with colourful, seasonal flora. The top table in this shoot – built using an old wooden door fixed onto sawhorses – is not only adorned with a wild and unruly tablecentre, but mismatched china, gold candlesticks, lace doilies and turquoise linens. “I picked out pink ‘Akito’ roses, yellow ‘Sun City’ spray roses, orange tulips and small white chrysanthemums, which I combined with spiky thistles and seeded eucalyptus for added texture,” says florist Ashlie of Bud & Bloom. Ensure your flowers pop against a backdrop of dark green foliage and, of course, nothing says ‘western’ quite like a few feathers. Use these arrangements to decorate everything from chair-backs to your cake table, and keep your bouquet style unstructured and loose. Add even more colour to your décor with a cool aztec print – work this into your cake design, table linen and on the ribbons used to tie your cutlery together. Finally, in a nod to your theme, we love these quirky Kate Aspen cowboy boot place card holders – yee-haw!

Fall in love with the modern-rustic styling of this shoot, which took place on a private Californian ranch. In particular, especially if you’re planning a marquee or tipi reception, the vibrant colour palette and seasonal blooms work perfectly for late summer celebrations. Gold footed vases overflowing with bouquets of king protea, dahlias, roses, peonies, succulents, veronica, asters and seeded eucalyptus help create bright and bold centrepieces, and make the most of the giant dahlias by using the heads to top your cake and place settings. Keep your table styling simple – a few cut-glass votives set upon plain white linen is the perfect accompaniment to your metallic details; gold charger plates and brass goblets topped with succulents. Old wooden or wrought-iron furnishings can be used to showcase focal points such as your cake table. Turn it into a real feature with the addition of colourful vintage books and a few fresh peaches in a nod to the season and colour scheme. Here comes the sun, indeed!

WHY NOT TRY...

1. cut each stem to about 9cm long, ensuring you remove any

unwanted leaves. each stem will need to be wired to strengthen; position a wire behind the stem, about a third of the way up, and bend the wire ends together – with one shorter than the other. 2. Holding the shorter length of wire parallel to the stem, wrap the long wire leg around both the

stem and the other wire leg. Finish by straightening the long part. Repeat this with each stem.

3. Wrap a piece of floral tape around the top of the wire and flower stem, ensuring it is tight and no gaps can be seen. Repeat this process for each flower stem. 4. To complete, place all of your flowers together. Starting with your focal flower, add each one by taping the stems together, ensuring they’re all facing the same way. how to make the most of your money

£500-£1,000not everyone can (or would want to) Kim and Kanye it-up by spending £90,000 on a wall of flowers, so if you have a small budget for your floral requirements, what is the most economical way of spending without forfeiting the look of your day? “Seasonal flowers are key,” says florist Karen Morgan of Passion

For Flowers (passionforflowers.net). “and if the bridal party is small, that helps as well. couples understand that a larger guest list will increase the food and drink budget, but they may not realise that the more people there are in the wedding party, the higher the spend will be for flowers.” The star of the show is, of course, the bridal bouquet, and a simple hand-tied arrangement can start from around £75. Then while the groom, best man, ushers and dads will all require buttonholes – usually starting at £7.50 each – the bridesmaids and flowergirls will need bouquets at around £65 a piece in the lower price range. The option

of fresh-cut blooms displayed in jam-jars is one of the most cost-effective options when it comes to table decorations, as a selection of three per table would come to around £40. if you fancy something more substantial, a jug or vase will cost around £60, while a more elaborate arrangement for your ceremony and top table costs from £95. if you’re comparing these prices to the flowers you’d buy from a supermarket and they come as something of a surprise, it’s worth remembering that you’re not just paying for the flowers themselves, but for the delivery, and for the florist’s time and expertise.

Precious metal: Try a luxury bowl of blooms at around £100 per table

Many of ours are driven over from Holland, but they can come from all around the world. With this budget, we can start bringing in other varieties of roses and more specialist blooms.” at this price range, the bouquets and buttonholes can all be enhanced to create fuller or more detailed arrangements, and there’s lots more scope with décor. a pair of large vases to flank the focal point of your ceremony will cost around £150 a piece, and the floral flourishes at the reception can be stepped up a notch as well. “There’s enough in the budget to do something a bit more ‘wow’ here,” adds Karen. “Try a footed bowl of flowers for each table, incorporating a touch of gold for a bit more luxe.” This would come to around £100 per table, and for an extra £10 a table, a handful of tealights in decorative holders or a pair of candlesticks can be added. get more blooms for your buck by re-using your ceremony flowers at the reception, but remember that if the florist needs to transport them, they will need to be paid for their time. The top table can also be enhanced with posies in vases, candlesticks or tealights for another £100.

Bold blooms: With this budget, it’s possible to look at more statement centrepieces

£3,000-£5,000it is within this price range that most couples are currently spending. a big white wedding with floral displays at the ends of each pew, statement centrepieces at the reception, a troupe of bridesmaids, and touches such as a floral arch will all bring the budget up. Flowers will play a key part in the day, but even then, money will still be an object and you want to make sure you’re spending wisely. Remember that every single floral touch will add to the cost. in this price bracket, the bridal bouquet could cost around £150, with each bridesmaid bouquet costing around £85 and buttonholes from £10 each. corsages for the mums come in at £15 each, and flowergirl pomanders around £65 each. Meanwhile, flower crowns are still very popular with modern brides and cost around £100, and archway flowers start at £400. “With this budget it’s also possible to look at larger urns for your ceremony décor, floral chair-backs, striking centrepieces at the reception, and a garland of flowers to decorate the top table,” adds Karen. Tall candelabra cost around £250 each, and it’s also possible to look at decorating the cake with fresh blooms. While a simple cake-topping posy would cost around £30, there is scope for more intricate displays to create more of a statement dessert table.

£5,000 +if the wedding you’ve been dreaming of is a banquet of blooms, you’ll need to allocate a hefty chunk of your budget to flowers, flowers and more flowers! Whether they’re blossoming fragrantly throughout the church like an enchanted wonderland, lavishly adorning you and your bridal party, or running rampant throughout your reception, there’s not one part of your day that will not be touched with petals. Flower walls are perfect as a backdrop to formal pictures or for framing the top table, and they start at around £1,500, while blooms set in assorted tiny bud vases along the top table will cost around £550. To add wow to the high space of a marquee ceiling, floral chandeliers or suspended pomanders start at around £250 each. Tables at the reception could be flowered-up with not only large statement centrepieces, but embellished with smaller vases of blooms and candles to create a whole show-stopping scene. Meanwhile, place settings for guests could be marked with hand-tied sprigs of roses tied with ribbon for £5 per head. “another way to add a wow factor would be to place trees along the aisle of the church,” says Karen. “These cost around £100 each, and for a large church you would probably need 10 on each side.” The Royal wedding back in 2011 was one of the first high-profile weddings to feature potted trees indoors, but while William and Kate opted for maples and hornbeams, less-statuesque alternatives such as olive trees might better suit anything smaller than Westminster abbey. The atmosphere... We knew we wanted to get married in San Juan capistrano because we love the Spanish feel of the city and its buildings. My favourite colour is yellow, so we incorporated this into our décor with grey tones and natural materials, including wood and linen, to soften the look. We enhanced the Spanish vibe by incorporating vintage church pews already at the venue and old doors we had hired, while bistro lights and crystal chandeliers were hung in the courtyard

to create a romantic glow for the reception. The look... My strapless gown featured a lace overlay and small train. i teamed my dress with a sparkly hairpiece from LoBoheme, which added just the right amount of glitz, while my bridesmaids wore grey dresses from dessy with statement coral necklaces. Mike looked dapper in his grey Hugo Boss suit, which he paired with a yellow bow tie and pocketsquare. The details... We had guests coming from all over the country and wanted everyone to feel like family, so we seated them at long tables to make it easier for them to mingle. We lined the centre of the tables with wooden boxes filled with yellow flowers and californian foliage, while clusters of candles and fresh pomegranates were interspersed

between. Table numbers were etched onto empty wine bottles, and we used natural linen napkins to complement the stationery.

We had a three-tiered cake, finished with buttercream and adorned with fresh blooms.My favourite moment... i loved our first dance. We had lessons beforehand so we could surprise everyone with our moves! My tip for brides-to-be... Hiring a wedding coordinator was one of the best decisions we made. They helped us with all of the details, which made putting our perfect day together a really fun process. W

The glam plan

The atmosphere... We love getting dressed up and having fun, so we wanted a glamorous day which would reflect us as a couple. While much of the flowers and décor was inspired by the grounds of our venue, which boasted a rustic vineyard and carriage house, i’d also fallen in love with our linen swatch – a gold and white sequined chevron pattern – and so many of the glitzy details were inspired by that! The look... i’d first seen my Vera Wang dress back in 2011, so when Matt proposed,

i was keen to track it down. i eventually found myself in nordstrom’s bridal boutique, looking at a similar style. When i explained what i was looking for to the assistant, much to my surprise, she informed me that they were going to receive a sample of my dream dress the following week! it was the only gown i tried on and it fitted perfectly. Our bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses in a palette of blush, peach and mint-green, complete with statement gold necklaces, and Matthew wore a classic black tux. The details... i wanted my late grandmother to be a part of our day, so we used some tulle and lace from her wedding dress to create a floral arch for us to marry beneath – it was beautiful. Later, we held our reception out on the patio; we had long tables dressed in white linen with sequin

runners, and each table featured crystal chandeliers adorned with flowers. There were also smaller arrangements displayed on gold trays and vintage books in mercury

glass vases and crystal decanters. cake- and pie-pops were dotted around the setting to complement our whimsical styling. My favourite moment... i loved having all of our family, who had come from all over the country, together in one place. My tip for brides-to-be... Research your suppliers carefully to build a dream team. and don’t forget to put your husband first – make sure he feels part of the process. W

A tipi for two

The atmosphere... Having grown up on a farm, i loved the idea of a relaxed, country-fête-style celebration. We love the rustic, festival feel of tipis, so hired these as the setting for our day. The décor was centred around my love for Liberty print fabrics; we lined the tipi with floral bunting and worked the colours used in the prints into our flowers. after the ceremony, our drinks reception was held outside in the sunshine, where guests enjoyed rose lemonade and gin.

The look... For the ceremony, i wore a Lusan Mandongus gown, featuring a scalloped lace neckline and capped sleeves. i was lucky enough to have a second dress for the evening – a backless satin gown from Belle & Bunty which was much easier to dance in! i teamed my dresses with a floral hair circlet. Our bridesmaids looked chic in their ’50s-style dresses from Ted Baker, while Myrddin wore a blue suit with brown brogues and a Liberty print bow tie. His bright buttonhole comprised craspedia, hydrangeas and delphiniums tied together with twine. The details... We had floral arrangements in large milk churns displayed outside the church, and these were later transported to the farm. Upcycled furniture was dotted around, showcasing focal points such as the guest book, card station and desserts. We

decorated the tables with jam-jars and glass bottles filled with flowers, and our tableplan was made using vintage porcelain plates on an old wooden door, displayed on an easel.

My favourite moment... The speeches were a very special moment – at the end of Myrddin’s, he and three friends took to the stage to sing a Welsh version of With A Little Help From My Friends by the Beatles. My tip for brides-to-be... don’t be afraid to ask for help. i am a bit of a control freak and i struggled to delegate tasks, but in hindsight, this is definitely something i should have done more of! W

Blossoming love Ruth and James filled their classic country wedding with pink blooms and vintage décor

The atmosphere... We tied the knot in May and were extremely lucky with the weather, so we held our drinks reception outside on the terrace of Brympton House, overlooking the extensive lake and grounds. For our wedding breakfast, we filled the beautiful ballroom with flowers and antique silverware. We wanted the overall look to be relaxed yet elegant. The look... i found my lace and tulle Lusan Mandongus gown in Teokath of London – i’d tried on a few dresses prior to going there

but knew i preferred slimmer-fitting styles. i wanted to wear a veil for our church ceremony, but the more traditional designs detracted from the back detail on my dress. in the end, i opted for a hair comb and a short birdcage veil, and completed my look with a pair of patent peeptoes embellished with floral shoe clips, and pearl earrings. The details... We decorated the tables with lace doilies and silver candelabra, and mercury silver votives filled with pale pink and cream flowers. Our stationery was made using brown paper – we cut it into the shape of luggage tags and tied it with twine to a vintage ladder to create our tableplan, and our menus and order of service cards followed suit. We set up a table in the entrance hall as a focal point for our guests as they arrived – this featured recycled cardboard letters of our

initials wrapped in pink and grey wool, and a wicker basket for guests to leave their cards in.

My favourite moment... The love you feel from your friends and family is what makes the day so special; i felt it the moment i walked into the church and saw the sea of beaming faces before me. My tip for brides-to-be... i loved pulling together all the diY touches. if you’re heading down that route, ensure you plan well and everything is finished at least a month before the wedding so you get time to relax and enjoy the build-up. W

The great outdoors Quirky props and garden roses set the scene for nicole and Josh’s alfresco day

The atmosphere... as i’m american and Josh is from the UK, i was keen to make the most of the beautiful english countryside. We wanted our wedding to be fun and relaxed for everyone, where guests could play lawn games and lounge around in the sunshine. We chose narborough Hall for its stunning landscaped gardens, but it also had a rustic barn which provided more than enough indoor space in the event of rain. The look... i found my Justin alexander

gown online, but bought it in the US so i could have the shopping experience with my mum and sister. My maids wore silk-chiffon dresses from J. crew – i wanted them to be comfortable but coordinating, so they picked out different styles in a light pink palette.

The details... We hung festoon lights and lanterns outside and had candles on the tables so we could dine with our guests during sunset, it was really romantic. We brought the indoors out with antique furniture and created a garden party vibe with fruit punch served in old-fashioned glass jar dispensers. Our table numbers were showcased on vintage books,

and glass bowls filled with English roses made for pretty tablecentres. We had a decorative wheelbarrow filled with roses and gypsophila, and smaller arrangements tied to the chairs as pew ends. as a personal touch, we displayed old family photographs alongside a vintage suitcase which we used to hold all our cards. My favourite moment... The day before the wedding our family went to the wrong venue – then there was a downpour so the reception furniture couldn’t be set up until the morning of the wedding. Josh and i even had to do a rehearsal in our wellies. as i skipped off to get ready, i knew from that moment on everything had to be fine!My tip for brides-to-be... Have a Plan B! Luckily, we had gorgeous weather on the day – but i would have been really stressed had we not prepared for the worst. W

Floral letters1 Begin by hollowing out the cardboard

letters. Do this using a scalpel or craft knife. Carefully slice around the edge of each letter until the front comes away.

2 Cover each letter with two coats of white spray paint. once the paint is dry, cut blocks

of Oasis foam into pieces small enough to fit inside the letters. Pack them fairly densely – you want them to be wedged firmly into place.

3 Cut fresh flowers, such as roses, in a colour to match the rest of your décor, leaving

a few centimetres of stem on each head. Carefully push the flowers into the Oasis, using the stems to pierce it. Continue to add them in until the letters are completely filled with brightly coloured blooms.

1 Clean each jar thoroughly then apply the tape in the pattern you’d like to create.

any non-taped areas will be painted, so cover everything you want to stay clear, including the rim and base. apply two coats of metallic spray paint to the jars, then leave to dry.

2 without removing the masking tape, apply a coat of glitter spray paint to your jar.

once it is dry, pull away the tape. Cut a 40cm length of wire and wrap it around the rim of the jar. twist the ends together to secure it.

3 Cut two 40cm lengths of chain using pliers. snip open the last link in each, and slip

them through the wire around the rim of the jar. Close the chain links tightly – both should now be securely attached. Finally, cut a further length of chain (this will be used to hang your jars), again snipping open the last links. slip both shorter chains onto this one and close.

✓ CheCklist One year tO gO... Compile a scrapbook of flower varieties and colour schemes you like by tearing pages from Wedding Flowers & Accessories and Wedding. Find out if your venue has its own in-house florist you can use.

NiNe moNths to go... Once you’ve picked your dress and the attendants’ outfits, add a swatch of both fabrics to your scrapbook to refer to when you’re looking at colours for your flowers. If you’re not using the florist promoted by your venue, start looking for potential florists close to where you’re getting married. Ask for recommendations, or search the online supplier directory at weddingmagazine.co.uk. Compile a florist shortlist. Make appointments to see each one and take your scrapbook with you to each meeting. Book your favourite, the earlier the better. Make sure you get the booking confirmed in writing, together with an estimated breakdown of costs. You may also be expected to pay a deposit.

six moNths to go...

If your florist isn’t familiar with your venue, ask them to join you on a visit so they can advise on the best way to decorate each room. Now’s the time to finalise your flower order, together with the number of arrangements needed.

three mOnths tO gO... If you’re wearing flowers in your hair, order a trial set and have a run-through with your hairdresser.

oNe moNth to go... Hold a final meeting with your florist to reconfirm the number of arrangements.

Provide details of all delivery addresses. Most florists will set up three hours before the ceremony, so plan a suitable schedule. Double check with your venue that the florist will be able to set up at your pre-arranged time. Find out when the florist expects the bill to be settled – normally 10 days in advance – then arrange receipt of payment.

three days to go... Check with your florist that all the flowers you’ve ordered are available. If your florist has to order any alternatives, arrange to view them if necessary. Discuss any last-minute arrangements. Make sure your florist has a list of emergency contact numbers in case of any unforeseen problems.

the big day... Ask your florist to check all the blooms to make sure none have been damaged in transit. Hand over buttonholes for the groom’s side of the wedding party to the best man. Store any other buttonholes and corsages somewhere cool and dry. Place hand-tied bouquets in water. Wired arrangements should be spritzed regularly with water. Make sure you dry off the stems of your bouquets at least half an hour before you leave for the ceremony, so there is no danger of them staining your dresses.

5 Will the florist you’ve consulted with be the person doing your flowers, or will it be another member of the team?

6 Is there a consultation fee? If so, can this be redeemed against your flower order?

7 Will they be prepared to make a mock-up of your bouquet and/or table flowers so you can view them before the day? Is there a charge for this?

8 Is there a maximum distance they will travel to decorate your venue, and do they charge for delivery? If so, how much?

9 When will you be expected to pay for your flowers, and by what method? Will they ask for a deposit to confirm your booking?

10 How far in advance of your wedding day do you need to confirm your order?

12 How long do they need to set up? Will they be bringing assistants?
