Wickets, Googlies & RunsCricket, like any sport, has its own language! A googly is a type of delivery that can be achieved by spin bowl-ers. The difference with a googly is that the expected spin is reversed to fool the opposing batsman.

The concept of a googly portrays a reality familiar to all of us. Life is full of times when we are unsus-pectingly bowled a googly and we find ourselves overwhelmed. When batsmen face googlies, they do whatever they can to not get bowled out. What about you? What do you do when things get too much? The following

Our Daily Bread Bible reading notes will help you think about Someone who is always there during the pains of life; Someone who loves you more than you can possibly imagine; and Someone who gave every-thing in order to offer you a secure place in heaven.Just like googlies in cricket, trials in life are to be expected. It’s what we do about them that counts. Should we scrabble about behind the crease desper-ately trying to bat away problems? Or should we put our faith in Jesus Christ, the One who claims He has “overcome the world” (John 16:33)?

If you enjoy the readings in this leaflet, use the sign-up form to request regular copies of Our Daily Bread to be sent to your home address.

One Day Internationals (ODI) and Test matches.

These two types of cricket couldn’t be more different! It would be disastrous for a team to approach the fast paced, hard hitting ODI with a care-ful and sometimes painstaking Test match mind-set. If teams used that game plan in an ODI, they probably wouldn’t get many runs! ODI players choose to ignore the Test match attitude to concentrate on the game at hand. All of us must choose between options in life, but one choice in particular is universal. Jesus explained, “Anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life” (John 3:36). We must decide on the choice Jesus presents: will we trust Him or not?

Christians are people who have “[believed] in God’s Son” and therefore please God. They have put their trust in Christ, giving their lives to Him. Because of this they have a secure future in heaven. The truth is that living for ourselves and living for God are complete opposites. They won’t fit into the same life. It’s like trying to play an ODI with a Test match game plan; it simply won’t work! We must make a choice between the two. —Chris WaleThank You, Father, for sending Your Son to die in my place. I choose to give my life to You today. Thank You for the assurance of my place in heaven. Help me live my life in a way that pleases You. Amen.

Everyone must choose— Christ or condemnation.

The Real ChRisTmas

Every year at Christmas, James Baxter watches people rip apart his product and throw it away. However, as the president of a large Christmas wrapping paper com-pany, this gives him no regrets.Every Christmas we seek to surprise friends and family with presents in eye-catching gift wrap designs. But when God sent Jesus into the world, it wasn’t to give us an appealing package of Himself to gaze on. Jesus willingly left His glorious appearance in heaven and came to earth clothed with our humanity, knowing that His purpose was to die for our sins.

While today’s earthly rulers ride about in expensive limousines with armed escorts, God’s visit to earth was in stark contrast. Instead of coming in great power, pomp and majesty, God emerged in Bethlehem as a baby, dependent upon a teenager for shelter, food and love. Born in a shelter for animals, without royal atten-dants, there was nowhere to lay the newborn King other than a feeding trough. As Phillips Brooks put it:How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven. This gift speaks of God’s profound love for you. That is what makes Christmas such a joyful time: we celebrate God’s greatest gift to us—Jesus the Messiah. As you read this selection of articles from Our Daily Bread, we trust that you will discover the wonder of God’s gift—and receive Him as your own.

The glitter of bright decora-tions, the sound of joyous

Christmas carols, happy chil-dren and the cheerful “Merry Christmas” greetings sometimes give the impression that every-body is glad that Jesus came to our planet. However, that isn’t true today, and it never was.

The news of Jesus’ birth evoked a mixed reaction. The wise men joyfully welcomed and worshipped the Saviour (Matthew 2:10-11). King Herod, on the other hand, was so trou-bled when he heard about it that he tried to find and kill the baby Jesus (vv.3-4,16). Most people, however, were unaware of the significance of what had happened.

Still today, multitudes honour Jesus and rejoice in their salvation. But many others hate Him. They grumble about the singing of Christmas carols in shop-ping centres and the display of nativity scenes in public places. Others are apathetic. They go along with the celebration of the season. They may join in singing Christmas carols, but they never ask themselves who Jesus is or why He came. They don’t think of their need to believe on Him and receive Him as their Saviour. Are you among the indifferent? To ignore Him and His claims is to reject Him. Christmas demands a decision about Christ. The choice is yours. — Herbert Vander LugtWhat will you do with Jesus?

Neutral you cannot be;Someday your heart will be asking,

“What will He do with me?” —Simpson

If you make room for Jesus in your heart, He will make room for you in heaven.

Christmas ChoiCeread:Matthew 2:1-12

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. —Matthew 2:10

Day 5

AG760

It’s important that we keep Christmas in perspective.Peter Larson wrote: “The life of Jesus is bracketed by two impossibilities: a virgin’s womb and an empty tomb.” The stable in Bethlehem and the cross of Calvary remind us that we are dealing with God: the God of miracles; the God of mercy; the God of grace; the God of life. Christmas and Easter are celebrated at different times and in very different ways, but they are integral parts of God’s grand plan of salvation.

Jesus Himself tells us that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God wants us to accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour and enter into a secure and everlasting relationship with Him. Christmas demands a decision about Christ. If you want to have a personal relationship with God, then it begins with an honest prayer. You may want to use your own words, or use a prayer like this:God, I’m sorry that I have so often rejected and ignored You in my life. I thank You with my whole heart that Jesus died to pay the price for my sins. Thank you that through Him I can know You. I accept Your offer of full forgiveness and eternal life. Please help me to trust Jesus with my whole life from this day on.If this is an honest expression of your heart, then be assured that you have entered into a personal relation-ship with God!We encourage you to start attending a church and to let a pastor know of your decision.

Few sounds are as exciting as that of a baby’s first cry. Few moments are as thrilling as holding your newborn for the first time. And few challenges are more intimidating than taking responsibility for a new life entrusted to your care. These are just a few of the things that make childbirth an overwhelming experi-ence. Months of long waiting are now absorbed into the emotions of holding a new life in your arms. The blend of joy and anxiety, of excitement and apprehension, of wonder and relief enrich this experience like no other. Now the real challenge begins—parenting! Moving into an uncertain future can carry its own set of con-cerns. Where can you go for help? To the wisdom of the God who creates life. In the pages of the Bible we find direction, hope, strength and encouragement. These selections from Our Daily Bread are intended to encourage and instruct you in your new role as a par-ent. A young mother sent these lines to a magazine: “I wish

I could wrap my children in bub-ble wrap to protect them from the big, bad world outside.” Author Stormie Omartian understands how that mother feels. In her book The Power of a Praying Parent, she writes, “One day I cried out to God, saying, ‘Lord, this is too much for me. I can’t keep a 24 hours a day, moment-by-moment watch on my son. How can I ever have peace?’ ” God responded by lead-ing Stormie and her husband to become praying parents. They began to intercede for their son daily, mentioning the details of his life in prayer.

The desire to wrap our children in bubble wrap to protect them is rooted in fear, a common tendency, especially among mothers. Wrapping them in prayer, as Jesus did (Matthew 19:13-15), is a powerful alter-native. He cares more about our children than we do, so we can release them into His hands by praying for them. He doesn’t promise us that nothing bad will happen to them. But as we pray, He will give us the peace we long for (Philippians 4:6-7). This challenge is for all parents—even those whose children have grown up. Don’t ever stop wrapping your children in prayer! —Joanie Yoder

Day 5 Jackson, our new grandson, had soft blemish-free skin,

fine features and 10 tiny fingers and toes on two little hands and feet. How could any proud Gran-dad not see him as a ‘perfect’ baby? He certainly was a mira-cle of divine formation (Psalm 139:13-14). The apostle Paul gave us a broader view of such ‘perfect’ little infants when he wrote, “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin . . . Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam” (Romans 5:12-14). In other words, every child is born with a tendency to sin. But that’s not Paul’s final word. He also wrote about Jesus, the “last Adam”, who became a “life giving spirit” (1 Corinthians 15:45). Long after man’s first sin, a baby was born who was God incarnate (John 1:14). God made Christ “who knew no sin to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we trust Jesus as our Saviour, the Holy Spirit creates within us a new desire to do what is pleasing to God. The flesh still has its pull, but the pull of the Spirit is stronger.

More Than a Game“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”

Bill Shankly was one of Britain’s most respected football managers. He’s remembered best for his time at Liverpool between 1959 and 1974 where he won five domestic trophies and one UEFA Cup. He also said the famous words above. Football was much more than just a game for Shankly. However, players like Linvoy Primus, a fans’ favourite when he was at Portsmouth, have a dif-ferent perspective. He said, “If you make football your life, then when you finish you’ll be disap-pointed.” For Primus there was something more important than his career. After a fellow player at Fratton Park shared with him about Jesus Christ, his life changed.A few weeks later I had heard enough and wanted to give my life to the Lord . . . From the Bible I was able to get all the answers I needed. At last, for instance, I knew how to be a proper husband to my wife, and father to my children . . . after studying Scripture for guidance I had a significant change of atti-tude to football and resolved to do my very best for God, based on honouring God in all I did, serving God with all my heart and doing everything for him.

Meeting Jesus changed Linvoy Primus’ life. There are plenty of other footballers who have had simi-lar experiences. Read on to see the impact Jesus had on Nicola Legrottaglie, Oscar Ewolo, Zoltán Gera, Sylvinho, Lee Young-Pyo, and others.

Many people, making even the smallest of donations, enable RBC Ministries to reach others with the life-changing wisdom of the Bible. We are not funded or endowed by any group or denomination.

Will You Take Up Sylvinho’s Challenge? He is not the only footballer to give His life to Jesus. Amongst many others are Jermain Defoe, Brian McBride, Edmilson, Kaka, Marcos Senna, Rory Fallon, Lucio, Geovanni, and Juan Carlos Valeron. These players keep football as just a game and realise that the real life and death issue is the choice about Jesus.

If you’re convinced by what you have read you can start a relationship with God right away by simply talking to Him. You can use your own words, or a prayer like this: God, I’m sorry that I have rejected and ignored You in my life. I thank You with my whole heart that Jesus died to pay the price for my sin. Thank You that through Him I can know You. I accept Your offer of full forgive-ness and eternal life. Please help me to trust Jesus with my whole life from this day on.If you know you are genuine then be assured that you have entered into a personal relationship with God! The Bible promises that “He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12). We encourage you to start attending a church and to let a pastor know of your decision.

“When I started my career all I wanted to do was to play football, but now I know there is more to life; and now I want to show other people how great it is to be a Chris-tian.” —Rory Fallon, New Zealand“Without God there is nothing.” —Jermaine Defoe, England

MORE THAN A

GAME

Sylvinho’s ChallengeSylvinho has had an illustrious career. The Brazil-ian left back has won 26 caps for his country and played for some of the world’s biggest clubs. During spells with Arsenal, Barcelona, Corinthians, Celta Vigo, and Manchester City, he has won three La Liga titles, the Brazilian national league, and two European Champions’ League winners’ medals.

So what is most important in Sylvinho’s life?I have known the Lord for a few years. I opened my heart and allowed Jesus Christ to come into my life to make me a new person, with a new life and attitude. I was very happy because I recognised that I was a sinner but now I am forgiven. I’m a man trying to do what God tells us in His Word, the Bible.Jesus Christ died for me and for everyone who is reading these words, to give us new life, to help us return to God’s ways, to rec-oncile with Him. It was a great sacrifice and we need to recognise it. It doesn’t matter who you are. You can give your heart to Jesus. He wants to show us the real way to God. No matter what problem you may be facing, God is at the end of that way wait-ing for you.

Today can be the most important day of your life if you decide to accept Jesus Christ. It is a very important decision to return to God’s way, to do His will, because He gave His life for you. I challenge you to accept Jesus and come and serve Him with me.QR069

A Journey Through BROKEN DREAMSMany of us grow up assuming our life will follow a certain road. We’ll go to school, find a job, get married, buy a house and start a family. Quite often, however, things don’t go as planned . . . and we find ourselves facing a roadblock. The roadblock for Sheridan and Merryn Voysey was infertility. In A Journey Through Broken Dreams, the Voyseys honestly share their struggle. After a decade of medical procedures, they made the decision to ‘redesign’ their lives and their expectations. As with the death of any dream, it meant asking hard questions and re-examining the life they wanted compared to the one God had planned. Their life took a detour, but ultimately they found peace in their marriage and with God.

Let Sheridan and Merryn help you discover what it means to face a new normal when life doesn’t go to plan.

I climb because I love the mountains . . . and I meet God there. —Lygon Stevens

Climbing the mountains of Colorado, America, brought a sense of peace and an overwhelming feeling of being in the presence of God to 20 year old Lygon Stevens. However, in January 2008, the sudden and unexpected sweep of an avalanche ended her life.

In this Day of Discovery programme you’ll travel to the Rocky Mountains and the city of Loveland, Colorado, where the events of that tragic day and the months that followed are recounted by the Stevens family. Facing the reality of Lygon’s death and the miraculous survival of Nick, her brother, they address the question “Why, God?” And from the pages of Lygon’s diary they share answers, which ultimately point to the sovereignty of God.

Gain a better understanding of who God is during times of trials and heartache. Discover from Lygon’s example how you can trust God to work for your good because of who He is—the one and only sovereign God.

For more than 300 years Christians, living during the rule of the Roman Empire, endured persecution as a result of their faith. How, in the midst of such brutal opposition, did this growing group of believers emerge and ultimately bring Caesar to his knees?

Take a closer look at the struggles faced by early Christians and their driving force to endure, as Dr. Joseph Stowell, President of Cornerstone University, takes you on an amazing journey to modern day Rome. You’ll also visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ephesus and other significant locations that reveal the formation of the Christian faith in the Roman Empire from a social, economic and political perspective.

Gain insights into the similarities between the oppression of Christians then and now. Discover how you can stand firm in your own faith through the early believers’ example of community, compassion and endurance.

“Our Daily Bread saved my life!”

Natalie found herself on the wrong side of the law on several occasions. While she was imprisoned in England, Natalie discovered the Our Daily Bread Bible reading notes booklet.

“I would look forward to reading Our Daily Bread as God’s message to me each day. I would read the article and then try to live by that principle for that day. I could hardly wait for the next day to read what Our Daily Bread could teach me about God’s Word.”

After she was released from prison, Natalie felt sure God was telling her to start a rehabilitation centre in Jamaica. Now she runs the Chance Rehabilitation Home, helping people to realise that God loves them and can help them conquer their problems.
