wSYNOPSIS
ThedisappearanceofAlexandrePicard,a renownedarchitect,putshis lifepartner,MyriamLambert
(Pascale Bussières), in a state of panic. Did he leave her? Did something happen to him? Because
valuablebelongingshavedisappearedalongwithherpartner'spersonaleffects,Myriammakesaclaim
to the insurance company, secretly hoping that her fiancéwill be found. Theman's disappearance
causesanexistentialcrisisinRobertLaplante(Jean-MichelAnctil),theclaimsadjusterworkingonthe
case.ThemusicMyriamlistenstoawakenswithinhimemotionshehadthought longgone.Frédéric
Venne(ÉmileProulx-Cloutier),ayoungarchitectturnedrealestateagentthroughlackofconfidence,
nowseesanexceptionalopportunitytohavehistalentrecognizedthroughtheschemeMyriamoffers
inorder tohideherpartner's "absence".Myriamhopes to savehiswork,aprestigiousconstruction
project,butalso,andmostimportantly,tosaveface.Frédéric,forhispart,isupforanythingthatwill
provetohisrecentex,Charles,thatheisworthmorethanthedepressionthathaskepthimdownfor
years.
Ashedriftsfromhisstraightandnarrowlife,RobertLaplanteletshisinvestigationturnintoapersonal
quest,causingconflictwithhisfamily,hisboss,andhiscareer.Tohim,though,itfeelslikethereisno
turningback.Incapableofacceptingthatshecouldhavebeendumped,Myriamseekstorecreatethe
worldasitwas,tokeepherplaceandherrole,ratherthanchange.Meetingothers'expectationswill
have consequences, dragging FrédéricVenne towards adeep transformation. Still, nothingwill stop
himfromseekingrecognition.

Asacinematographer,mymainobjective is todisturb, todestabilize, toaffect theviewer. Ihumbly
seektowriteanddirectfilmsthatIwouldmyselflovetowatch,throughthemesandcharactersthat
moveme.Asaspectator,Iwanttobesurprised,enchanted,transportedandshovedoutofcommon
assumptions.IwanttobemovedbythedepthofcharacterstowhichIrelateorthroughwhichIcan
reflectuponmyself.
Inordertofosterthiscuriosity,toseethisastonishment,Iliketomakemycharactersevolvethrough
offbeat, sometimes surreal worlds where psychological anchors and self-examination remain
neverthelessquitereal.Iseektoputintoimagesthatwhichcanotherwiseonlybeallegorical,inorder
tohighlightourinnerconflictsandthehumancondition.
WEARETHEOTHERSismyfirstfeature-lengthfilm,anditunderscoresmydesiretocreateasensitive,
hypnotizingandtroublingwork,onethatspeaksasmuchtoemotionasitdoestoreason.Bylookingat
thegazeotherscastuponus,thefilmencouragesitsaudiencetoapplythestorytotheirowntruth,

Jean-François Asselin has written and directed LA PETITE HISTOIRE D'UN HOMME SANS HISTOIRE,
DÉFORMATION PERSONNELLE and MÉMORABLE MOI, three short films that were internationally
acclaimed,earningadelugeofawardsandtelevisionbroadcasts.Hewroteanddirected22episodesof
FRANÇOIS EN SÉRIE, a series that won the Gémeaux Award for Best Comedy in 2007. He has also
directedseveralepisodesfordramaticcomedyseriesLAVIERÊVÉEDEMARIOJEAN,CIAOBELLA,NOS
ÉTÉS,LESPÊCHEURSincludingseveralads.Morerecently,hewaswriteranddirectorofPLANB,with
LouisMorissette,which became Série+'s greatest success.WEARE THEOTHERS is his first feature-
lengthfilm.
