Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund

The Professional Staff Congress/CUNY, the instructional staff union of the City University of New York, established the Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund in 1979. The Belle Zeller Fund offers scholarships to undergraduate students at CUNY as well as to a student in the CUNY Law School and a student in the CUNY doctoral programs. The scholarships honor the founding president of the PSC, Belle Zeller, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Brooklyn, where she taught for over 40 years. Professor Zeller had an outstanding sense of social commitment, notable leadership talents, and a record of scholarship that earned her a national reputation in her field. She died in 1998.

Recipients should exemplify the social commitment, leadership and scholarship that marked the career of Belle Zeller. In 2000, the Trustees of the Fund named the scholarship offered to a student in the doctoral programs The Irwin H. Polishook Scholarship to express our admiration for Professor Polishook’s contributions to unionism in higher education. He was an associate of Belle Zeller, succeeded her as President of the PSC, and served in that position for 24 years, retiring in 2000. Professor Polishook also held important positions in the state and national affiliates of the PSC, and he wrote extensively on higher education issues. We are pleased to be able to acknowledge his many accomplishments through this scholarship. The Fund is currently an independent, non-profit organization.

NEW YORK STATE EXCELSIOR SERVICE FELLOWSeIP PROGRAM

The New York State Excelsior Service Fellowship Program is a funded two-year fellowship offering talented individuals hands on training and experience in New York State government. Excelsior Fellows work full time at host executive-branch agencies, advancing the operational aspects of large policy initiatives. Fellow placements include the Executive Chamber, Empire State Development Corporation, Justice Center, Department of Environmental Control, and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo welcomed the first class of Excelsior Fellows in September 2013 and viewed them as an integral part of his mission to advance opportunities for the best and brightest who are called to public service. Although the Excelsior Service Fellowship Program lasts two years, exceptional fellows may continue to serve New York State. More than 60% of the first class of Excelsior Fellows were offered permanent positions post-fellowship.

Reuuirements and Details

Candidates must possess a graduate degree (i.e., MPA, MA, MBA) or an advanced degree (i.e., JD, PhD) no later than June 2016. JD fellows will be placed in legal assignments unless they expressly reuuest otherwise. Candidates are encouraged to note their areas of interest and any preferred placement agencies, however final placements will be dictated by budget and the needs of state government. While some opportunities exist in New York City, most agency placements are located in Albany, New York.

Salary is in two-tiers, based on years of work experience after college: • Fellows with less than fi e years of post-collegiate work experience are paid $55,000annually

• Fellows with fi e or more years of post-collegiate work experience are paid $60,000annually

All Excelsior Fellows must submit to a background investi ation onducted by the New York State Police and the Center for Recruitment and Public Service. Fellowship appointment is conti gent upon this background check.

Application Process

Applications a d selections or the 2016 New York State Excelsior Service Fellowship Program will be administered by the parti ipati g partner schools. Interested applicants should submit to their school’s designated contact: resume, transcript, 3 references, and a cover le� er. Applicants should also include a statement of purpose, outlining their interest in the Excelsior Service Fellowship (no more than 750 words). The cover le� er may serve as the statement of interest.

Graduate Center students interested in applying should forward their materials to the O� ce of Career Planning and Professional Development by Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Please use the email address: [email protected].

Partner schools will forward their selecti ns to the Center for Recruitment and Public Service no later than March 1, 2016. Prospecti e fellows will be interviewed for placement by the Center for Recruitment and Public Service, and will be notified of eir assigned placements by June 10, 2016.

ARC Student Research Praxis Awards 2016-2017

As part of its effort to encourage student research, the Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) will be offering a number of Research Praxis Fellowships for the coming academic year 2016-2017. The Awards are valued at $4,000 each and are for one semester only.

To be eligible, you must be a full time registered doctoral student who has completed the First Exam but not yet completed the Second at the time of the tenure of the award. Preference will be given to those who have been enrolled for no more than three years and who are in the early stages of the formulation of a research idea/proposal.

Students who accept this award will join an ARC student/faculty research cluster led by ARC Distinguished Visiting Fellows from within and without the CUNY system working in related areas and will be reuuired to attend three (3) research praxis sessions during the semester. Preference will be given to students whose research interests are congruent with the research themes of the Distinguished Fellowship Program for 2016-2017. The themes are:

Immigration

Inequality

Multilingualism

In addi� on to a� ending the three sessions above, Awardees will be reuuired to do the following:

Submit a research statement of approximately 10 pages to their ARC student/faculty research cluster at the end of thesemester of their tenure.

A� end the weekly ARC seminars for the semester of their tenure (approximately 15 seminars each Thursday 4:30 – 6:30pm throughout the semester)

Post a 400 word blog on the ARC student research website commenting on the issues raised in one of the seminarswhich they have a� ended.

Career Night: Teaching in Blended Learning Environments

Dear Graduate Center Community:

Blended learning has become a critical part of teaching and learning in most American colleges and universities. Increasingly it is becoming the modality of choice in mainstream higher education. If you would like to learn more about blended learning, on Thursday, February 11, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, the PhD Program in Urban Education as part of its Career Night Series, will host a two-hour program discussing the design and development of blending learning courses at the postsecondary level. Anthony Picciano (Executive Officer, Urban Education) and Luke Waltzer (Director, Teaching and Learning Center; Instructor, Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Certificate Program) will lead the discussion. The underlying theme for the evening will be that sound pedagogical practice drives the technological application of blended learning techniques. Audience interaction will be encouraged throughout the discussion.

The first in a series of public discussions on the outcomes of the Paris 2015 Climate Conference and the implications for grassroots organizations and frontline communities. Invited to attend and participate in the sessions will be leaders of front-line communities struggling with environmental injustices, environmentalists, urban planners, design professionals, community activists, as well as national and international environmental organizations, and governmental representatives.

This session will focus on the outcomes of the Paris talks. What was achieved and what was not achieved? What will the implications be for cities and regions? In particular, what do the agreements mean for communities that are comprised of low-income people, as well as emerging economies and nations struggling to overcome colonialism?

Included will be a discussion of the role that emerging and new professionals could and should play and the importance of equitable and inclusive responses to climate change.

Theme: Forced migration is an overwhelming crisis today on the international stage, both in scope and in complexity, affecting every region of the world. Migration, in particular the forced migration of refugees fleeing conflict and economic deprivation, is a cross-cutting issue bearing significant relevance to the UN agenda. This program examines the global migration crisis through a Human Rights, Psychological and Intercultural Perspective. Presenters will integrate psychological science and practice into the work of civil society and governmental response and illustrate their relevance to the UN 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.

other appropriate professionals when necessary;9. THE RIGHT to present concerns about services and to be informed of procedures for seeking their

resolution;10. THE RIGHT to accept or reject participation in teaching, research, or promotional activities;11. THE RIGHT, to the extent permitted by law, to review information contained in their records, to

receive explanation of record entries upon request, and to request correction of inaccuraterecords;
