Mayor de Blasio Marks Fleet Week with Announcement of NYC
Veterans Mentoring Initiative
May 25, 2017
The initiative will bring together mentoring organizations, the City, universities, and
others to ensure that every veteran or family member who wants to be a part of New York City has
access to a mentor. The initiative will mentor 2,000 New York City veterans and family members
by July 1, 2018
NEW YORK–Mayor Bill de Blasio and Department of Veterans’ Services Commissioner
Loree Sutton today marked the beginning of Fleet Week by announcing the NYC Veter-
ans Mentoring Initiative. The NYC Veterans Mentoring Initiative is a public-private
partnership bringing together City government, service providers, universities, and
others to ensure that New York City’s veterans and their families have access to high-
quality mentorship. The NYC Department of Veterans’ Services is acting as the back-
bone of the effort--setting the agenda, driving action, and convening stakeholders. The
initiative is bringing together over a dozen service providers that offer best-in-class
mentoring for veterans and their family members. The initiative will mentor at least
2,000 New York City veterans and family members by July 1, 2018.
“New York is at its best when all of its citizens are coming together,” said Mayor de
Blasio. “This mentoring initiative will help veterans succeed in school and find long-
term careers. This program is about building relationships between veterans and civil-
ians, and recognizing what they have in common as citizens of this great city.”
The announcement includes a web page housed on the DVS website – www.nyc.gov/
vets -- that allows New Yorkers to engage with veterans and family members by serv-
ing as a mentor. In the fall, aligned with the beginning of the school year, the City will
launch a marketing campaign targeted toward veterans and their family members. The
campaign will steer veterans and family members to a website that will coordinate re-
ferrals to ensure that every mentee is getting the most out of their mentorship experi-
ence.
The NYC Veterans Mentoring Initiative is the City’s first contribution to Veterans on
Campus-NYC, a new coalition of major public and private universities in New York
City that aims to attract more student veterans by helping them to thrive once they’re
here.

Anthony Rivera, Marine Corps
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Anthony Rivera served in the Marine Corps from 1990 to 2010 and retired as
a Gunnery Sergeant. During his long career, he served twice as a Drill In-
structor (DI) and completed numerous contingency and combat deployments.
He currently attends John Jay as an undergraduate and is majoring in Secu-
rity Management. Before attending John Jay, Anthony received an Associ-
ate’s degree from Nassau Community College. His decision to come to NYC
was influenced by his New York upbringing. John Jay was Anthony’s school of
choice because it has an esteemed and affordable program directly related to
his field of interest. After graduating in December, 2017, Anthony plans on
relocating to California for employment. One of Anthony’s challenges during
the transition from Service Member to Scholar was the feeling that he was
starting to late. Anthony’s advice to future veterans is to stay focused and
complete your degree, it’s never to late.
Abiel Mendez, United States Army
Hunter College
I served in the United States Army from 2010-2014 and the United States
National Guard from 2014-2016. My MOS was 13B-Cannon Crewmember.
After completing AIT in Fort Sill Oklahoma, I received orders that I was
going to be stationed in Germany. I was ecstatic about this news, as I have
always wanted to see the world so Germany was a good place to start that
journey. After completing my time in active duty, I decided to enlist in the
National Guard where I did the same job just a lot closer to home. Why
CUNY? Great question. My eldest brother and my older sister are both
alumni of Hunter College so it was very easy for me to make that decision. I knew I was getting a quali-
ty education. In addition, I attended Hunter College before I joined the Army so I was already comforta-
ble there. Coming back to NYC was easy for me as I was born and raised in Spanish Harlem. I felt con-
fident that I would be able to succeed back in my hometown. The biggest challenge I faced, however,
was coming back to NYC from Germany and attending classes two days after I landed. It’s a good thing
I had Alex Rosero, veteran advisor at Hunter College, on my side. He helped me every step of the way
even when I was in Germany. Another challenge I faced was that I did not feel prepared academically
as I was not taking classes during my active duty career. I felt overwhelmed but it did get a lot easier
as the semester took its course. Currently, I am on track to graduate in Spring 2017 with a B.A. in Soci-
ology. To all future veterans, do not feel overwhelmed when applying for your GI Bill benefits. Try to
save up as much as you can as well. You never know what will come up. Also, take summer and winter
sessions. You get paid to study. What is better than that?

Brian Vigoya, Marine Corps
Queens College
My name is Brian Vigoya, I am a Marine Corps Veteran that served ac-
tive duty from 2010-2014. In 2014 I transitioned to the Army Reserves.
I am currently majoring in Labor Studies, and minoring in Accounting
at Queens College. I received my Associates in Applied Science - Busi-
ness Management from LaGuardia Community College. I am expected to
graduate May 2018. I came back to NYC primarily for my family. I
wanted to be back home after being away for so long. I chose CUNY due
to attending it before I left for the military and wanted to come back to a
familiar scene. My goal is to work as an administrative aide for a labor
union or as a human resource specialist for a school. The biggest transition for me was not having any-
one to tell me what to do at all times or to go here to go there. To actually be in charge of my own life
was a large hurdle for me. It’s not all over when you get out of the military. That was only one chapter
in your life that may have helped define you, but you are more than just a military man or woman. You
have options take advantage of, like professional networking, personal connections, and on campus re-
sources.
Briana Sammons, Marine Corps
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Corporal Briana Sammons served in the Marine Corps from 2011 to
2015 and deployed in the Philippines in Operation Enduring Freedom
(OEF). She currently attends John Jay College of Criminal Justice and
is pursuing a B.S. in Criminal Justice. Before coming to John Jay, Bri-
ana earned an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Nassau
Community College. She chose to come to NYC because it has a good
reputation for quality education and a well-known and affordable pro-
gram directly related to Briana’s field of interest. After she graduates
in Fall 2018, Briana plans to pursue a career in law enforcement and
then transition to a government position. Some of the challenges that
she encountered while transitioning from Service Member to Scholar include the pressure of having to
perform well with deadlines, dealing with the civilian population, and acclimating to the school environ-
ment after being out of school for six years. Briana advises future veterans to stay focused on the goals
they developed in the military. She also said that even though it can be rough outside the military, there
is a light at the end of the tunnel and reminded veterans to block out any negativity.

#VeteransOfCUNY Eric Gerda, Marine Corps
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Eric Gerda served in the Marine Corps on active duty from 2009 to 2013,
achieving the rank of Corporal. He deployed to South America. He current-
ly attends John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is majoring in Crimi-
nology. Before attending John Jay, Eric received an Automotive Technology
Degree from the Technical Career Institute in New York. Living in New
Jersey and traveling to New York City in order to attend John Jay is a chal-
lenge that Eric is willing to endure because his sister attended John Jay
and the school has a very respected and affordable program directly related
to Eric’s field of interest. After graduating in May 2017, Eric plans to attend John Jay to receive an
MPA, and then work with a federal agency. One Eric’s challenges during his transition from Service
Member to Scholar was the ability to successfully integrate himself in an academic culture that is seem-
ingly limitless. Another challenge was getting to know and understand the different characteristics and
personalities of his counterparts on campus. For service members still in the military, Eric advises that
they research the route/major they wish to take before they separate from service and be sure to take
advantage of VA benefits upon ETS.
Elizabeth Delacruz, Marine Corps
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Elizabeth Delacruz served in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2012, achieving the rank
of Corporal. She deployed in combat operations in Afghanistan. She is currently a
John Jay graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Prior to
her graduate studies, Elizabeth received a BS from John Jay in Criminal Justice. She
chose to come to NYC because it is home to the best school for criminal justice, the
very reason she chose to attend John Jay. After graduating in May 2018, Elizabeth
plans to pursue a career on the federal or state level. Acclimating to the school envi-
ronment after being out of school for four years is one of the challenges that she expe-
rienced during the transition from Service Member to Scholar. Elizabeth advises eve-
ry service member, whether they are still serving or have been discharged, to take ad-
vantage of the benefits available to them, both as a veteran and CUNY student.

Gabriel Campos, US Army
Queens College
My name is Gabriel Andre Campos and I am a US Army Veteran, a VA
work study and a Queens College undergraduate student. After my 4 ½
years of active duty service, I departed from the Army and returned to
my hometown of Queens, NY. For the first few years I joined the civilian
workforce and worked a variety of odd jobs in an attempt to establish
myself. During those years I noticed many of the professionals I inter-
acted with were mainly Undergrads and Graduates who attended
CUNY. As a result I decided to obtain my Associate’s Degree in Mathematics at Borough of Manhat-
tan Community College. My initial goal with school was unclear, other than to gain an education and
refine my mathematical skillset, but the veteran presence on campus was tremendous. The faculty,
advisors and students I interacted with assisted me in choosing a Computer Science major for my
Bachelor’s Degree at Queens College. Like most veterans, I am unable to simply focus only on school. I
have responsibilities, obligations and personal matters that constantly interfere with my schedule.
Regardless of what life throws at me, the support that I receive from the many veteran resources and
colleagues within CUNY are what has kept me on track to graduate by Spring of 2018.
Jefferson Yu, Marine Corps
Queensborough Community College
My name is Jefferson Yu and I am a Marine Veteran currently enrolled in
Queensborough Community College majoring in Electrical Engineering. It
has been a tough year and a half transitioning back to school after my 4 and
a half years in the Marine Corps. However, everything that I have learned in
the Marine Corps has lead me up to this point. After being accepted to NYU
Tandon School of Engineering I learned that the key to success is to always
stay motivated and to never forget to be the best you that you can be. Always
have confidence in yourself and you will continue to break down each obsta-
cle you thought was never possible. Nothing should ever hold you back as
long as you remember that each and every one of us has a fate not written in
stone. You can be anyone you like as long as you work hard and commit to
the process.

Sebastian Vargasperez, US Navy
Baruch College
I served in the U.S. Navy from 2010 to 2014 as Logistic Specialist. I was at-
tached to the USS Emory S. Land for one year, home-ported in Diego Garcia,
B.I.O.T (British Indian Ocean Territory). After this, I transferred to Naval Mo-
bile Construction Battalion 1 where I was deployed for 9 months as a support
unit to OIF. Currently, I attend Baruch College majoring in International Busi-
ness with a minor in Political Science. My family played a big role in my deci-
sion to relocate to NYC after serving in the military. I chose CUNY because of
its’ diversity and its supports of veteran students. Since the day I applied and
throughout each semester; there has always been a helping hand for me.
CUNY offers its veterans a unique place to acquire the necessary tools and
knowledge to stay competitive in the labor force. At the beginning, it was challenging to adapt to the
classroom environment because in my military experience I never followed a schedule that required me
to stay in room for 2-5 hours almost every day of the week. After graduation I plan on entering in the
international corporate field. My advice to future veteran students is to utilize all student resources. If
you find yourself in a situation where you feel you need help, with any matter- either veteran or student
related- I guarantee that someone at CUNY will be there to assist in one way or another, this is what
makes CUNY so special for veterans.
Mildred Hayanga, Air Force
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Mildred Hayanga enlisted in the United States Air Force in May 2015 and is
currently serving as an Air Force reservist while pursuing her Bachelor's de-
gree in Criminal Justice at John Jay College. Prior to her time at CUNY, she
earned an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Hudson Valley Commu-
nity College and an Associate’s degree in Law from Kenya. Mildred is on track
to graduate in 2018 and moved to NYC to attend John Jay, choosing the col-
lege after visiting for a tour of the school. After completing her education, Mil-
dred plans to pursue a career as an Investigator with the FBI. Balancing work
and school has been the biggest challenge in her transition back into an aca-
demic setting. Mildred values education, and would advise future veterans to
keep focused on their future.

CUNY is happy to announce its involvement in the Department
of Veterans Affairs– Student Work Study Allowance Program. The VA Work Study
program allows student-veterans who are receiving education benefits to work in a
veteran related office at CUNY. Since Fall 2016 CUNY has expanded its VA Work-
Study to over 20 locations including campus veteran centers and the CUNY Central
Office. Participation in the VA work-study program provides the veteran student
with additional financial support for their tuition as well as significant work expe-
rience that can help foster post-graduation employment. Students may participate in the VA work-study
program if they are enrolled full-time or 3/4-time in a college degree, vocational, or professional program. Vet-
eran students earn an hourly wage equal to the federal minimum wage or the state minimum wage, whichever is
greater, in addition to their education benefits. CUNY is currently seeking un-
dergraduate and graduate students to fill positions in our Central Office of
Student Affairs-Veterans Affairs and Central Office of Academic Affairs - Contin-
uing Education & Workforce Programs unit.
If you are a student veteran who is interested in becoming a VA work-study
professional within CUNY or a CUNY administrator who would like to host
VA– Work-Study students please send an email to [email protected].
10 Things to Know About VA Benefits Certification
1. Satisfactory academic progress is mandatory, not conditional.
2. Twelve (12) credits are equal to full time status for both undergraduate and graduate level of study.
3. If a student withdraws prior to first day of classes, all funds will be refunded to the VA. This should mean the student
does not owe CUNY.
4. If a student withdraws after the first day of classes, they maybe liable for tuition and fees and/or BAH.
5. If called to active duty, student must submit orders to school certifying official (SCO) for proper VA reporting.
6. If a class is required for a major, the class may be repeated and paid for by the VA. The class cannot be a General Edu-
cation course.
7. If the student is in their last semester and need less than full time classes, they can round out to take 12 credits in order
and get the full BAH and financial aid.
8. Student must have one in-residence, brick and mortar class to receive full BAH.
9. Student must be more than half time to receive minimum BAH. For example 7 credits on a 12 credit scale.
10. Summer equation for fulltime
3 Credits @ 3 wks = Full Time/Full BAH
6 Credits @ 8 wks = Full Time/Full BAH
3 credits @ 5 weeks ≠ Full Time 3/4 TIME
