We Are Going to Love It !!! - By Marla Belzowski – Editor
After more then 10 years of planning
and hard work from all our members,
this is the Month that we have been
waiting for. Our new building is in the
final stages of completion.
We are just waiting on some pumbling, restroom details
and kitchen details now. With the cold weather, piping
up the water has taken a little longer than we wanted.
Some final decisions on flooring have added in a little
more time, but we are slowly getting closer to our move
in date. There has been a ton of heart and soul along with
sweat equity put into this building. I’m sure we will love
all the effort once we move into the best training club
building in Ohio.
We will need people to volunter to help with moving
items from our old building to our new building in
February. Perri will help to coordinate the final details of
the move. [email protected] contact her to
volunteer.
We need people to sell raffle tickets for our “March
Madness” Gift-Card Calender Raffle. Contact Kim
Burrier for detals [email protected],
Also in March is our Conformation Puppy Match.
Contact Shelley Kacenski for information if the match
flyer doesn’t answer your questions.
And we will have our “Grand Opening – Leash Cutting”
planning for the weekend of June 14 & 15 underway.
Do I hear a “Group Hug” coming on?

are reporting that people are eagerly snapping up these
tickets and if rumor has it, there might be another “Month
of Madness” calendar raffle in the summer or fall if the
interest stays this high. Please try to get those tickets sold
and all stubs and money back to Kim by FEB 22!

TRAINING DIRECTOR’S CORNER
From Dale Burrier –
Training Director
I thought I’d start out 2014
with a new bit for the club
newsletter titled “Training
Director’s Cornered”… no,
wait… “CORNER”.
Ahem… What I mean to say is, I’ll be writing to you
as not only a fellow club member, but as your leader
in all training aspects… Especially as we embark
upon a new chapter in the history of our club:
Opening our new training center! I’ll admit that since
2006, I’ve been a fairly low-key/hand’s off kind of
training director. I hope to change this, starting with
2014!
Welcome to my “Corner”! As we are wrapping-up the
month of January, we edge closer to getting into our
new building. There will undoubtedly be some
growing pains, as we move our equipment, figure out
spacing, accommodate class schedules, etc., etc., etc.
Bear with us as we forge ahead! There will be new
opportunities for classes, both time, and content. If
there was ever a time to get involved with instructing,
now would be the time to offer your services! All
club members are expert in something: obedience,
agility, tracking, herding,
upland/retrieving work, flyball, disc dog, lure
coursing… you name it, we now have room to do it!
We depend on all of our members to volunteer… we
can’t survive without you!
Courtesy. Short word, long on meaning. As we figure
things out, especially with the spatial items as ring
locations, crating areas, equipment storage… play
nice!
Be courteous with your fellow club members, help
someone who might have their hands full, or assist
someone moving jumps.
Instructors, please be courteous with your students!
Your knowledge of dog training is a
valuable asset, but it doesn’t make you
Lord of the Ring…
I know some folks may be maddening
when it comes to following instruction,
but try not to lean on them too much.
Remember that you were a novice,
once upon a time.
Since we will have so much space in
the new building, we’ll have plenty of
room for X-pens, if that is your
preference for confining your dog(s).
Please be aware that we will no longer allow dogs to
be left uncrated/unattended in the office, and
absolutely no dogs will be permitted in the kitchen.
Be aware of your dog’s demeanor while confined… it
does not look good to visitors when your pooch is
acting like a raging sociopath in his X-pen, and it
annoys the instructors who are trying to teach over the
din of a mega-barker.
Be courteous and quiet your hound, or remove them to
your vehicle.
We are planning an Instructor’s meeting, the Sunday
following the Puppy Match, March 9th.
Agility and Obedience will take 1-1/2 hour blocks
starting at 9 a.m., thru noon.
Trainers, check out Susan Garrett’s “Handling 360”
web page: www.Handling360.com/2/
Please let me know if you have a question, problem,
idea!
You can always approach me at the club, or you may
contact me by email: [email protected] or
You may also reach me at 440-220-0551, which is my
cellular phone.

BLOAT! This will kill roughly half the dogs it affects.
Do you know the signs?
What is bloat?
When the stomach is filled
with air, fluid or food, it’s
considered bloat. Bloating is
extremely uncomfortable,
and it can put pressure on
other organs and cause
difficulty breathing.
However, the term “bloat,”
when used with dogs,
generally refers to a much more critical condition
called gastric dilation volvolvus, or GDV.
GDV happens when the bloated stomach becomes
twisted in the abdomen. This causes great tension on
internal organs and often leads to partial or total
restriction of blood supply to other tissues.
Suppression of the caudal vena cava, a large vein that
returns blood to the heart, can very quickly lead to
shock. Even when treated, it’s estimated that up to
40% of GDV cases result in death.
What causes bloat?
The exact cause of bloat/GDV remains unknown.
There are, however, certain activities that are thought
to be correlated with bloat. Below are some
suggestions that could reduce the risk of this tragic
condition.
• Spread out your dogs’ meals during the day.
Instead of feeding one large meal, feed half of the
daily portion in the morning and evening.
• Limit or refrain from exercise 1-2 hours before
and after your dog eats a meal.
• Do not raise the food bowl, unless directed by
your veterinarian. It was thought that this decreased
the risk of bloat in the past, but has since been thought
to do the opposite.
• Do not allow excess consumption of water,
especially after exercise and large meals. Large
gulping of water (or food) will increase the amount of
air taken into the stomach.
• Feeding diets free of or low in grains and other
carbohydrates – the majority, such as corn, rice,
wheat, soy and oatmeal, are highly fermentable and
can produce gas in the stomach.
• Reduce stress for your pet. Stress, no matter the
cause, is thought to be a contributing factor in cases of
bloat.
• Tacking, or prophylactic gastropexy, is a
surgical procedure that attaches (or
tacks) the stomach lining to the
abdomen. This is often done in high-
risk breeds, and can help keep a
bloated stomach from twisting. If
your dog has experienced GDV, it is
highly recommend to have this
procedure done as the incidence of
reoccurrence is extremely high.
Certain breeds of dogs, particularly
with large, deep chests, are thought
to be at a higher risk for GDV. These breeds include
Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers, German
Shepherds, Weimaraners, Irish Setters, Labrador
Retrievers, Irish Wolfhounds, Boxers and Standard
Poodles.
What are the symptoms of bloat?
It’s extremely important to know the early symptoms
of bloat. Remember, almost half of the cases caught
early enough to receive veterinary treatment result in
death. GDV is a true emergency, and the earlier you
can recognize the signs, the better.
Symptoms to watch out for include:
• Distended stomach
• Sudden lethargy, or restlessness and pacing
• Weakness
• Excessive salivation
• Unsuccessful attempts at vomiting
• Pale mucous membranes, such as the gums
• Shortness of breath
• Collapse
It is always better to be safe than sorry. GDV is a
medical emergency that needs immediate veterinary
treatment. Taking your dog to the vet at the first sign
of these symptoms can save your dog’s life. GDV is a
devastating experience, and veterinarians around the
world are trying to figure out the causes so we can
prevent this tragedy once and for all. Until then, do
what you can to limit the risks and keep an extra eye
out for your furry loved one. SHARE this, it just might
save a life! Read more at
