Spotlight

Our Triple Championship Marathon Run By Pam Rape & Vilma O’Neill In 2019 I was privileged to attain the AKC Triple Champion title on two of my Ridgebacks, littermates Dori & Tipsy. With support from co-breeders Dr Dan & Vilma O’Neill, we began our journey - a rewarding experience in dog training, in friendships forged and in emotional ups and downs. More than a certificate on the wall, it was the fulfillment of a dream and an honor for the breeders who carefully selected dogs for both form and function. The Triple Champion (TC) is an AKC advanced level of titling designed to recognize those dogs that have the form to succeed in the breed ring, the ability to function according to its breed heritage and yet still cooperate with the owner in another performance event to championship levels. The AKC defines the Triple Champion title as: “Any dog that has been awarded the title of Dual Champion (DC) and the title of Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH) or Tracking Champion (CT) or Agility Champion (MACH or PACH) may be designated as a Triple Champion” For the Ridgeback, the DC requirement is the combination of a Breed Champion and Lure Coursing Field Champion. My road to the TC started with my Rhodesian Ridgeback Kayla, GCHS Can CH Diamond's Seven Carat Cut by Ridgelea MC AX AXJ BCAT CGC TKP VC ROM, bred by Dr Dan & Vilma O’Neill, and a daughter of the O’Neill’s famous record setting lure coursing Ridgeback, Ariel. With a lucky #7 white mark on her chest, Kayla enjoyed a successful show and performance career and at 4 years of age produced a litter of a dozen puppies. The real starting line on our marathon was my decision to keep two puppies from this litter. I joined the ranks of the insane and set out on my adventure to raise/train/show two sisters, Dori & Tipsy. Dori was the more demure girl with more biddability and a ‘look at me’ kind of presence. Tipsy was the rough and tough independent hound with endless energy and endurance. Both were deemed performance potential by their puppy aptitude evaluator.

Our pre-marathon prep involved total commitment to nurture and develop the girls as individuals and as part of a happy pack at home. Socialization, training classes, rides in the van, crate training, visits to stores all had to be done twice as individuals and then together as a pack with Kayla as the role model. Do we see a theme here? Everything was happening in triples!! Every event repeated three times...triple tired! Achieving the TC was going to be a multi-year goal and tentative schedules and a strategy were necessary. Consideration was given to take advantage of the rate of the physical maturity of each dog, their mental maturity and the natural advantage of youthful innocence and enthusiasm. First, tackle the breed ring since this could be started while relatively young in age and didn’t require as much mental acuity from the pup. Concurrently nurture the lure coursing genes and begin conditioning as age and development allowed and also begin to train the foundation handling and obstacle skills for an agility career. And so the marathon began....the first leg was the breed ring. As an adamant owner/handler, I chose to bring Dori out first and she cruised along to her breed championship, winning an Owner/Handler Hound Group 1 along the way. As soon as she was finished I started showing Tipsy….one of her highlights was Puppy Hound Group 1 at Canfield, and she went on to finish her breed championship. Step 1 done with both girls! Our second leg of the marathon, and the easiest, was Lure Coursing. This is the premiere event for Ridgebacks and highlights their sighthound heritage. It was evident early on that the girls definitely had the running gene from Grandma Ariel and we looked ahead at the timing of our National Specialty. The girls would be 19 months old at the Specialty so we entered just 2 or 3 lure coursing trials to gain some experience and had great success. We went into the National Specialty well pointed in lure coursing and Tipsy and Dori both turned in the runs of their blossoming careers at the National Specialty….each winning their respective Open Stakes to earn 5 point majors and become finalists. The day belonged to Tipsy and she put in another outstanding run to become the National Specialty Best of Breed in Lure Coursing. This major win finished her Dual Championship, she was also the high scoring breed champion of record and won the Kennel Stake award with littermate Dori.

June/July 2020 Youngstown All Breed Training Club 5

Tipsy definitely had us all feeling ‘tipsy’ that day! What a fitting tribute to Grandma Ariel! Our final leg of the marathon was agility, my choice for our second performance event, and we had to go all the way to the MACH level (Master Agility Championship). This is the challenge for the Ridgeback – having the biddability to work with the handler and overcome some of the inherent houndiness to achieve the sustained perfection at the Masters level in agility. And even more important was the need to keep it fun and interesting, no boring repetitions or drilling skills for Ridgebacks. As with all dog training, the ‘relationship’ element was our most valued and effective tool and lots of time was spent keeping everyone happy. We did not trial excessively, knowing it would be a long term effort, we spaced out our trials to keep it fresh, not boring. We also kept competitive life interesting by doing other events - coursing, rally, barn hunt, trick dog, farm dog - all building on our relationship, teamwork and handling skills. Dori was by nature more biddable and our teamwork and invisible lines of communication came more easily. Dori moved through Novice – Masters more quickly and finished her MACH in the spring of 2019 on the weekend of her 4th birthday, becoming just the 9th RR in the history of the breed to attain Triple Champion status. The marathon continued with Tipsy, happy to play agility and enjoy the chase/running part of it, but equally willing to demonstrate her independent houndiness a little too often. She would tend to visually lock on to something and blow by obstacles, lack handler focus and otherwise just have a good time doing her own thing. But after Dori finished her MACH it became easier to focus 100% on Tipsy and doing some rally work helped to increase her handler focus and teamwork. Tipsy finished her MACH title in the fall of 2019 and became our second Triple Champion Ridgeback. Four years of planning and training and lots of ups and downs along the way, but what a rewarding experience, not only with my dogs but with all of our friends along the way. PS. There have only been 7 Ridgebacks who were Triple Ch. before Dori & Tipsy

Nosework Workshop with

Robin Ford By Perri Graf

On June 12, 13 & 14 we welcomed Robin Ford to YABTC

to introduce how to get your dog started in Scent Work.

The participants learned how to start their dogs in scent

work, and what the different types of scents are used in

different venues.

The dogs learned how to follow scent and build a good

foundation. Many went away with homework for their dogs

and where encourage to practice at home,

The Advance dogs had the opportunity to work on exterior

issues and how to work on specific issues for those in

attendance.

What is Canine Conditioning and

Fitness? By Karen Wisler

Exercise benefits our canine companions at every stage of

their life. Puppies can improve their coordination, focus and

confidence, while seniors can maintain their muscular

strength and balance. Improving a dog’s fitness can reduce

the risk of sports related injury, joint problems and arthritis.

In canine conditioning and fitness classes, five areas are

targeted to help our dogs be physically fit. They are

flexibility, balance, stamina, coordination and strength.

Flexibility exercises can improve your dog’s posture and

prevent muscular imbalances which can lead to injuries.

Balance exercises lead to improved proprioception and

aids in injury prevention. Balance exercises are used in a

strengthening technique in instability training.

Cardio exercises improve a dog’s stamina and can decrease

anxiety, stress and reduce chronic disease.

Proprioception or coordination is a key component in

canine fitness and conditioning. It allows our dogs to learn

new motor skills and develop muscle memory.

Canine Conditioning (cont…)

Strength training protects bone health and muscle mass .

It is especially important in our senior dogs to combat age

related muscle loss.

Some of the exercises learned in class are static and

dynamic stretches which promote increased range of

motion, circulation and increased oxygen to the dog’s

muscles. Balance exercises, which use the wobble board,

balance discs, Fit Bones and ladder work, help your dog

maintain equilibrium while in motion or switching

positions.

Long term endurance training can help reduce heart rate

and increase blood flow to the muscles with increased

muscle tone.

Coordination exercises are used to improve hind end

awareness, gross motor skills and improve proprioception

(body awareness). There are also exercises to improve and

strengthen a dog’s core, back and neck muscles, hind and

fore limbs. Dog’s who are physically fit and conditioned

tend to lead healthier and happier lives.

In Addition: The AKC has announced the next phase of the

AKC FIT DOG Program. CGC Evaluators can become

AKC FIT DOG Instructors (Level 1) by completing a new

course in AKC Canine College

The purpose of the course is to teach instructors who are

AKC CGC Evaluators how to teach a basic canine fitness

class.

In the course, evaluators complete modules for 6 weeks of

instruction. For each week, there is a video, corresponding

written material and a quiz.

The modules may be completed at the evaluator’s own

pace. At the completion of the course, the evaluators receive

a certificate for the AKC FIT DOG Instructors (Level1)

program.

Training Director’s Corner By Dale Burrier

Hello everyone! It's

been a while since

my last article, so

here it goes...

It's been a trying past

few months, with

Covid19, and our

shutdown. We tend

to take lots of things

for granted, and

don't realize what we

have... until it's

gone!

Well, we're back, and have slowly started to re-open for

dog training. Since we need to keep the numbers of

people to a bare minimum inside the building, we have

brought back ONLY income-generating classes, to start.

We finished classes that were suspended, and started new

classes with instructors who felt secure in returning to

teach. A few classes were canceled, because we did not

have enough instructors come back.

While we have established a protocol to follow, for those

returning to train, please be courteous to your instructors,

especially if they have additional requirements for you to

follow. They may have health issues to be concerned

about. We survive as a club, mainly due to the generosity

of our volunteer instructors! Thank you, instructors!!!

We have started Rally Run-Thru's on Tuesday nights.

Obedience Run-Thru's will remain on hold. Currently,

Rally runs will start at 5 pm with Master, and end with

Novice. See our website for complete times. $5 per dog.

Advanced obedience classes will remain on hold;

anticipated resumption will be sometime in September.

Look for a new "Grad Open" class to be taught by Tracey

Steele, which will help get dogs ready for Utility.

If you're jonesin' to train your dog in the building, and

aren't enrolled in a paying class, consider instructing, or

assisting a class. Instructors have been allowed to train

their dogs immediately before, or immediately after their

assigned class.

Club members are welcome to train outdoors, on our

wonderfully manicured lawns, kept in great shape by our

very own Tim Dillon! Outdoor Conformation class is

now conducted on the east field, at 7 pm on Tuesdays.

Remember it is still $5 per dog.

We have repurposed our PVC ring gating using a sturdier

PVC frame, construction all orchestrated by Perri Graf,

and assembled by club members! The conformation ring

is completely gated!

Social distancing and masks required for all outdoor

training.

Hope you are having a great summer and stay safe

everyone!
