You will see hundreds of names in this 25th anniversary issue of VASJ Magazine. But, truth be told, the names contained here don’t even begin to tell the whole story of the people who have made our school what it is.

We begin, then, with a comprehensive thanks to the tens of thousands of graduates, students, teachers, staff, parents, friends and supporters who have been

with us – standing with us and sometimes carrying us – on this remarkable journey of faith.

There is no need to recount the challenges we have faced together along the way. No doubt we could recite them in unison. But we also could cheer together about the little victories and the big ones that brought us to this spectacular moment in our history. It is a history that began long before the merger of Villa Angela Academy and St. Joseph High School.

It truly began when the Ursuline Sisters traveled from France to found VA on the Lake Erie shore. The spirit of our

school soared again when the Marianists founded St. Joe’s just a couple of miles away. And 25 years ago, when these two venerable schools came together in a partnership established and blessed by the Diocese of Cleveland, the path to success continued.

This anniversary issue celebrates that success. We

have included our most recent Donor Recognition Report as a means to acknowledge the vital importance of the financial support we have received over the years in order to continue the dream of Catholic education steeped in the core values of the Ursulines and the Marianists.

Our cover story speaks to those values and how they play out in the lives of today’s students. We are deeply grateful to the writer, Mike Tobin ’91, a member of VASJ’s first graduating class, who served as co-editor of this issue.

We salute the members of our Board of Advisors, led by Chairman Don Dailey ’70, and the entire administrative leadership team. And certainly we profoundly thank Bishop Richard G. Lennon, Superintendent Margaret Lyons (VASJ’s first principal), Associate Superintendent Eugene Boyer, Ursuline President Sister Susan Durkin, Marianist Provinical Father Martin Solma (graduate from the Class of 1966), and all of the Ursulines, Marianists and other teachers and staff members who have served at our school.

Thanks to all of you, we can look forward to VASJ’s service to our community for generations to come. God bless you.

COVER STORY

T his year marks the 25th anniversary of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and its crucial role as a pillar in the lives of its students, its neighborhood and the broader community.

It was the summer of 1990 when the former Villa Angela Academy and St. Joseph High School came together to form a new school at the corner of East 185th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard. The merger was the result of financial pressures but also was designed to better prepare students for a changing world, an increasingly diverse and fast-changing one in which technology would change the way students learn and live.

In the following two-and-a-half decades, VASJ would prove its value time and again as a place where students receive a top-notch education rooted in the traditions and teachings of its Marianist and Ursuline founders, where Catholic morality and character formation are taught alongside Shakespeare and physics. After some turbulent years, VASJ’s enrollment is growing and the school is leading a rebirth of its surrounding community.

“When we started, they gave us three to five years,” said Sr. Maria Berlec ’67. “Here we are 25 years later, a thriving, forward-looking school. It’s a school to believe in.”

VASJ: It’s a family thingBy Mike Tobin ’91

Sr. Maria would know. She taught math at VASJ when it opened and later served as principal from 1992-98 before serving as president and principal at St. Peter Chanel High School. She returned last year to teach math and now teaches religion.

“There were challenges along the way, ups and downs, yet the initial philosophy and values stayed,” she said. “The values haven’t changed.”

Sr. Maria now finds herself teaching children of the students she had in the early days of VASJ.

“I have parents come up and say, ‘Do you remember me?’” she said. “It’s a family thing. That’s the thread, the magic of VASJ. The seeds were planted and challenges had to be met and now it has flowered into a fabulous school.”

That fabulousness takes many forms – academic, spiritual, athletic and physical, among others.

For the past three years, every graduate has gone on to higher education. Vigorous college prep and Advanced Placement courses have led VASJ graduates to Harvard, Northwestern, Georgetown and the military academies, to name just a few.

But understanding equations and diagramming a sentence is only part of a student’s education. VASJ emphasizes the development of the whole student and prepares them for the real world, where not everyone comes from the same background or perspective.

The school’s Lenten Mission Collection has collected tens of thousands of dollars from students and distributed it to dozens of charities in Cleveland and abroad. Students organize and host “Christmas on Campus” annually, providing toys and gifts to poor families in Cleveland.

The students carry those experiences with them long after they leave VASJ, said English teacher Tonica Johnson.

“The values that they are learning at this institution will stay with them for life,” Johnson said. “Yes, they are learning the skills that they need to be successful academically, such as how to create and write an educated argument, or research a current economic issue, but there is something even more important happening at VASJ.

“This wonderful place teaches students the significance of giving back to the less fortunate through the Lenten Mission Collection, to help the needy through the abundance of service activities they participate in, and time management and leadership through the extra-curricular activities and

athletics that are offered,” she said. All of this is possible because of an underlying family

atmosphere cultivated by faculty, staff, students and alumni, said school Principal David M. Csank.

“Our motto is faith, family and future, and you’re going to get all three here,” Csank said. “Our students get a quality

education in a family atmosphere. This school becomes their home away from home.”

But it’s not just staff members who see it.“Over the course of a year I find myself inside

every high school in our diocese, as well as many schools outside our diocese,” said Eugene Boyer, associate superintendent for secondary schools for the Diocese of Cleveland. “Every

student, staff and faculty member I meet at VASJ exudes the VASJ professed family atmosphere. Many schools strive to be a family, but the VASJ community demonstrates the family value in all endeavors.”

VASJ remains known throughout the state and country for its athletic prowess. In the school’s first year, the boys basketball team won the Division I state title that had eluded the Vikings for so long. That was followed by state titles in 1992, 1994, 1995, 2013 and yet again this year. The

Vikings took the girls basketball state title in 1999 and won state titles in volleyball in 2001, 2005 and 2013. Along the way, scores of athletes have earned athletic scholarships to powerhouse universities, but even more learned life lessons about teamwork, perseverance and dedication.

And the school has never looked better. The gymnasium, home to sporting events

and dances, drama club productions and school liturgies, was renovated last year thanks to the generosity of Don Dailey ’70, who serves as chairman of the school’s Board of Advisors, and his wife, Mary Jo. The school chapel was refurbished and the chemistry lab has had a facelift through private gifts and grants. The entrance to the parking lot was enhanced with a brick wall, landscaping and lighting thanks to a gift from the Oarsmen booster organization and the St. Joseph Class of ’82. The upstairs library

has been transformed into the Villa Angela Heritage Room with the support of VA graduates led by the Ladies Night Out Committee.

Those improvements are taking place amid a construction boom in the neighborhood. University Hospitals recently completed a new building next door to the school, while the Cleveland Clinic continues to improve Euclid Hospital. Hospice of the Western Reserve is considering expanding onto property that once housed the Retreat House. And new investment is happening along East 185th Street

in the form of new restaurants and stores.Kristian Jarosz ’91, whose parents graduated

from St. Joseph and Villa Angela, says his time as a member of the school’s first graduating class in 1991 had a transformational impact on his life.

“It was incredibly important to me and I have nothing but fond memories,” he said. “The outstanding education, the friends I made and the memories I have.”

Jarosz works as the senior portfolio manager at Gries Financial and also serves as a Euclid councilman, representing the ward that includes East 185th Street and borders VASJ. The school’s success has helped fuel a neighborhood resurgence, he said.

“People who made a commitment to keep VASJ running and thriving deserve immense credit,” he said. “They dug their heels in and fought for this school. That’s a good lesson for the community. All you need is a handful of smart, dedicated people to make real change.”

The values that they are learning at this institution will stay with them for life.

~Tonica Johnson, English teacher

Margaret LyonsMargaret Lyons was the founding principal of the merged Villa Angela-St . Joseph High School and is the current secretary for education/superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Cleveland .

It has been a pleasure to see the school mature into a vibrant

faith community. The quality of the staff, families and students

are testimony to the faith and dedication that promises a

hallmark of success for the next 25 years at VASJ.

The Villa Angela Academy Class of 1984 held its 30th reunion in June 2014 at Brindaliers Bar & Grill in Willoughby Hills. The event had a wonderful turnout with 40 classmates attending as well as a few spouses and friends. Also in attendance representing the Villa Angela faculty and staff were Mr. Rodgers and Mrs. McMullen. The money raised was donated to VASJ for the Villa Angela Heritage Room. There was lots of laughter, reminiscing and catching up on the past 30 years. The highlight of the night was taking the group picture and then singing the VA Alma Mater. After all these years, everyone still remembered the words! Sister Naomi would be so proud. The class is already looking forward to the 35th reunion in 2019. Special thanks to Genny Lewis for volunteering to organize the reunion.

VASJ volleyball Coach Mark Royer ’75 led the girls volleyball team to its second straight appearance at Wright State University for the state tournament.

Sr. Laura Bregar ’75, OSU, is now working in the Ursuline Sisters development office after leaving her position as principal of Our Lady of the Lake School. She is proud of her OLL graduates who now attend VASJ.

Members of the St. Joseph High School Class of 1982, with assistance from the Oarsmen Club, donated a new gateway entrance to VASJ as their class gift. Spearheaded by classmates

Dario Muzina ’82 and Patrick Gallagher ’82, the new brick entrance provides a beautiful and welcoming view for visitors of the school.

Members of the team worked hard over the last year to contact many of the old players. Between players, band members, cheerleaders and others, more than 100 people attended a tailgate at VASJ before going to the football game.

Patrick Kander ’89 was featured in a Plain Dealer article where he spoke about his experience being chef and owner of his own catering business, Choice Catering, as well as offered tips about what it takes to succeed in the industry.

James Major ’90, executive chef for the Cincinnati Reds, competed and won on the Food Network’s ballpark-themed episode of their show ‘Chopped.’ After the victory, Major visited his alma mater where he prepared one of his award-winning dishes for students in VASJ’s culinary arts course.

Rick Finotti ’91 was named the director of football operations at the University of Michigan in March 2015.
