The photo shoot for this issue, using four models, was quite an experience in itself, in fact at the beginning everything was going ac-cording to plan.
The only thing that was not co-operating was the weather - trust our luck that it turned out to be the one day in June which was turning positively gloomy. This meant that our hours of daylight were going to be restricted. I had brought over the two Pronovias dresses and Marquita was scheduled to cross over with the two dresses from Weddingbells at a slightly later time, but we had allowed for this. However, we had not allowed for the kind of mishaps which hit poor Marquita one after the other that day. First phone call: “my car broke down at Bahar ic-Caghaq, am waiting for road assistance, so will be an hour late.” Don’t worry, we assured her, we will make it.Second phone call: “on my way”.A cryptic text message: “slight delay”.

Third phone call: “had a slight accident in Mellieha, waiting for warden”.
To say we could not believe it is an under-statement. However, don’t worry, we assured her, there’s still time. But the warden took an excruciatingly long time to arrive and repeated phone calls told us there was no sign of him yet.By this time, we were starting to mildly panic. The clouds were ominous, the light was fading and we had two models with hair and make up done but no dresses. We tossed ideas back and forth in case Marquita didn’t make it in time - should someone cross over for dresses? (but no, they would never make it in time, we real-ised). Should we re-schedule? (impossible). Finally the phone call we had been waiting for came: “I’m on my way to the ferry”. We told Marquita that she had to be on the 6pm ferry otherwise it would be too dark to continue the shoot. Pressure? What pressure? She said she would make it. We crossed fingers and toes and prayed. Marquita arrived breathless but got to work right away dressing the last two girls, like the true professional she is. It was only after Jes-sica had finished shooting the last two sisters that we all finally breathed a sigh of relief. By then, understandably, Marquita was almost on the verge of tears after all the stress of her memorable afternoon.
It felt like one of those zany films where every-thing that could possibly go wrong, did. And yet, we managed and we hope that you like the results of our “we almost didn’t make it” photo shoot with the Agius sisters.

edding details to Love news about the latest trends in the local wedding industry
Make-up tips by Venita
Detail is remarkably important; today, tomorrow and beyond. This bride’s make-up features a beautiful classical look which ensures timeless fashion.
The feature around the eyes creates a shade that suits one of the bride’s prominent facial features. Fresh colours, ideal for summer weddings, provide for a radiant look and contrast. Nevertheless it is always very important to opt for a scheme that suits one’s personality.
Another very important aspect is to ensure that make-up is long-lasting as it needs to withstand long hours of ac-tion and changes in temperatures particularly during the hot summer months. A long lasting make-up saves it from running and becoming shiny. This ensures having out-standing photographs for timeless memories.
Nikky from Icing on the Cake wedding plan-ners speaks to WD about some new trends:
Pastel Colours are proving to be hugely popular even when it comes to wedding stationery, this theme works well with couples who enjoy playing with light and texture to create an amazing vibrancy.
Rose Gold – Lots of rose gold will be seen in the com-ing months both for engagement and also for wedding rings.
Ombre – Another trend referred to as ‘Ombre’ has been growing in popularity. Ombre meaning shaded or graduated in tone, this is where colours blend into one another from light to dark. You will see ombre everywhere from bridesmaids’ dresses, cakes, decor to flowers, as well as nail polish and hair styles for the more daring.
Nostalgic Food – Many couples are choosing to go back to their childhood memories of kid’s par-ties by serving fries, candy floss and doughnuts at their wedding reception. This is quite a new trend, but I have no doubt it will take off pretty fast.
Flowers – Towering floral centrepieces will add drama and elegance to tables. Think very tall vas-es and candelabras this season.
Nikky specialises in giving each and every couple the kind of advice and service they need accord-ing to their tastes, ideas and budgets. She also has a vast selection of decorations which couples can choose from.“The advantage of having a wedding planner is to allow the couple to sit back, relax and simply en-joy the journey to their special day. Most people lead a hectic, crazy life, so why add on to the stress and turn something which is meant to be fun and

exciting into a living nightmare, when you can shift it onto a professional who will not let you down?”
Nikky’s advice to a bride is to be as organised as pos-sible to ease the stress. “The most important thing is for the couple to establish a budget and prioritise on the most important things which they feel will make their wedding a memorable one. The bride should also come up with a list of all the things she has always dreamt of, from the styles of dresses, col-our scheme, themes, the venue, the bridal cars, her favourite flowers etc. That will be a good start to help her determine what needs to be done, and how to go about things.”

Four Sisters - Four Styles
Our photo shoots always involve a lot of planning and co-ordination but for our summer issue we decided to make it even more “interesting”. With four sisters (one of whom was heavily pregnant) posing as our models, two hairdressers, two make-up artists, a florist who had to create four different bouquets, four sets of bridal gowns from two shops and our stylist who came up with four different teams, it was a logistical and creative challenge. Oh, and did we mention that the shoot took place in Gozo?
Together with wd’s creative direc-tor and photographer Jessica Moritz and our stylist Elaine Zarb, we were confident that we could do it and after weeks of planning, numerous emails and frantic Facebook group messaging back and forth it was all falling into place. It started off quite smoothly as everyone began to arrive
on schedule at our chosen venue, the luxurious Kempinski San Lawrenz and our models were beside them-selves with excitement at the idea of being on our cover. The management put us up in a beautiful suite, which was just as well with the kind of entourage we had. We definitely knew we would need more “hands on deck” so joining our usual talented team were Tiziana Sciberras Ghio (who owns her own hair salon cute Look by Tiziana, in St Paul’s Bay) and make-up artist Doro-thy Buttigieg (who has just opened The Look hair & Beauty clinic in Hamrun, together with her business partner Judith ricci). It quickly became a flurry of make-up, hairdryers, flowers and frothy white gowns while downstairs Elaine began creating the table set-ups and Jessica began working her magic.
The four sisters were each given a
different style to suit their personal-ity and look. Joseph from Flower Arts created four different bouquets with individual different colour schemes while each girl was styled accord-ingly and had a dress chosen to suit her figure. We also asked two very talented ladies, Leanne Gatt and Margot Portelli, who make bespoke invitations to create invites specifi-cally for this shoot and according to a designated theme.
The models were photographed in different parts of the sprawling grounds of the unique Kempinski San Lawrenz in order to showcase the versatility of this hotel. Boasting probably one of the largest outdoor venues in Gozo, each area makes an ideal setting for your wedding photographs and the possibilities are endless.

Suzanne, aged 20 is the youngest of the sisters. She is a fun and outgoing person whose favourite colour is pink. She dreams of having a modern wedding so Elaine came up with a modern black and white setup with pink touches in the luscious garden surroundings of the Kempinski where she made creative use of the chairs and tables there. A centrepiece with different shades of pink and dinner candles complete the effect.
Tiziana gave her a soft hairstyle to the side, which is a very popular, effortless look.
For the make-up, Daniela focussed on the eyes, using dark eye shadow with pinks to open the eyes, and natural false eyelashes.
She used light pink blush and pink lip-stick.
The bridal gown from Pronovias is called “Bacher” and came from the Costura collection. Made of royal satin, the column dress has a train attached and a detachable beaded yoke.
For this set-up we asked Leanne Gatt from ‘handcrafted by Leanne’ to come up with a jazzy modern invite. This is a folded wedding invitation on a black metallic card with white polka dot textured paper. A black peony, done in chiffon and tulle, was added to the invitation with matching pink beads and satin ribbon for a dramatic look.

Sarah-Jane is a 25-year-old teacher and is shy, calm and reserved. She loves yellow and the idea of having a beach wedding so the very large main pool area was the ideal spot.
Her hair was done by Jo Briffa who first curled her long hair to create volume and then turned it into a wavy, soft up style with a side parting.Make-up was by Daniela Cassar.
Sarah-Jane’s dress is a lovely, easy to handle bridal gown in lace by AD of Pronovias Fashion Group. The back peep hole detail completes this delicate bridal dress that is exclusively available at Wed-dingBells.
Leanne Gatt (handcrafted by Leanne) created a gatefold wedding invitation in white floral vellum paper decorated with coloured satin ribbons in orange, green and yellow to create a fresh and vibrant look. A yellow linen card was used as a base for the wording. Custom-made invites are Leanne’s speciality.
Sarah-Jane Agius was busy getting ready for her own wedding at the time we went to print, so we wish her all the best for her future married life. We are sure she will be a beautiful bride.

Jasmine is 22 and works in IT. A very creative person who loves to laugh, her favourite colour is turquoise. Her photo shoot was on the hotel’s terrace. The white garden furniture set against the soft yellow limestone of the terrace walls contrast nicely with the touch of tur-quoise. A tray filled with coloured bottles and adorned with flowers completed the setting.
her hair was done by Tiziana who used her very long hair to create a classic ro-mantic up style.
The fishtail dress by Pronovias is “Belinda” from the Dreams collection. This mermaid dress has a lace bodice and narrow straps, while the skirt has irregular organza frills.
Make up was by Dorothy who used peachy and brownish tones of eye shadow for the eyes followed by gel eyeliner. To make the eyes glow, a set of false eyelashes were used. The face was contoured with bronzer and a soft shade of rusty pink as a blusher was put on the cheeks. Lips were outlined and followed by a nude lip gloss.
The beautiful handmade wedding invita-tion by Margot Portelli (hand creations by Margot) has a touch of scalloped lace, with aqua organza and a jade and gold satin ribbon embellished with an exqui-site pearl and rhinestone brooch on a shimmering pearly card. All invites can be customised according to the clients’ theme and colour scheme.

Maria Attard is 28 years old, married and expecting her first child. A sensitive and outgoing person she likes pastel colours and loves vintage. So the setup has soft, vintage touches, accentu-ated by the rubble walls on the Kempinski grounds which were flanked with vintage-inspired lanterns.
Whether because of pregnancy or a full figure, Marquita shows that it is possible to find a dress which will make you feel like the perfect bride. The ivory coloured dress in a simple and elegant style from Weddingbells, is ideal for brides who are expecting as its empire line is very flatter-ing. It is a simple bridal dress with a lace bodice and chiffon skirt. This empire cut
dress is suitable for any bump no matter the size as the skirt is cut on the bias. Her hair was done by Jo Briffa, who cre-ated a swept up hair style giving Maria a very sophisticated regal appearance.
Dorothy gave Maria a very natural look by using a primer all over her face and topping it up with an HD foundation and translucent powder. She went for a matt beige lid and a darker beige to contour and define the eyes. She also used a soft black eyeliner pencil on the upper lid and applied a coat of mascara. On the cheeks she used a cream blusher instead of powder to give that fresh look. A dusty pink lipstick completed the look

Maria Attard says: “Since I am mar-ried it was not my first time in a wedding dress, but as I am pregnant being in a wedding dress during such a special time in my life made it more magical, I loved the dress! Being photographed by Jessica Moritz is always a great pleasure she is a wonderful photographer and artist and I am already look-ing forward to plan another photo shoot with her and my sisters! All in all the day was a very pleasant one spent in the company of my won-derful sisters!

Do you believe in love at first sight?
That’s what it was like for designer Kevin Muscat and photographer Kris Micallef. Not love of the romantic kind, but an obsession with each other’s work. They met briefly when London based Kevin was show-casing his award winning brand Muscat London at Malta Fashion week in May 2013, but they didn’t get to work together until a year later when Kevin was visiting Malta again, this time taking part in Malta Design Week.
Kris began his career in photography through his fascination with beauty and the human form. This makes him particularly suited to fashion photogra-phy. He graduated in Architecture and Civil Engi-neering in 2011 and this background influences his photographs – order, geometry, light and beauty are keywords synonymous with Kris’ photography.
Kris’s work has been published in magazines in Eu-rope, the Middle East and the United States. He’s also exhibited his work in brussels (2012), kyev (2012), Jerusalem (2013), ramallah (2013), Saint-Tropez (2013) and valletta (2014).
Kevin’s work also reflects his varied background. Born and bred in Malta, Kevin moved to London aged 19 to study dance at London Studio Centre. He went on to work internationally touring with the highly acclaimed Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake and other companies. Before setting up Muscat London, Kevin made costumes for international pop artists including Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole and the Girls Aloud.
Kevin’s work reflects his background in dance. With a thorough understanding of the human form and the way it moves, his creations enhance, flatter and move with the wearer. He is inspired by couture and tailoring.
Both artists like to explore possibilities of working not just in their medium but collaborating and us-ing multiple platforms. They share a love of Malta’s capital valletta. Shooting at night, they felt the city’s magnificent architecture would both contrast and compliment the Muscat London bridal collection.Jewellery was provided by Mvintage Jewellery.

“We met 6 years ago at one of the local clubs through some common friends who intro-duced us. Gustav used to organize the famous French my Fridays at Shadow Lounge, and we did party quite a lot during the first four months together. Good old times!” says nikita with a laugh.
The proposal happened at Gustav’s apartment. “He prepared dinner, wine, candles and just be-fore we started eating he took out the box. He made me believe they were earrings, but when I opened I find this beautiful engagement ring in yellow gold and mounted on white gold! Couldn’t have chosen it nicer myself. We then flew the next morning to Munich and Bavaria to celebrate our engagement. “

the finest materials possible. I took the design idea from Le Spose Di Gio dresses (which I had tried in London) and always loved the off the shoulder cut. I was too bored of seeing strap-less dresses at each and every wedding and this was the dress I have always dreamt of. As the trials went along, it was coming more and more together, and on my final trial I did not want to take it off, I simply loved it. The design was not easy, a v at the front, and a low v at the back plus straps on the side of the shoulders – it was not an easy dress to wear either. While I was seeing the latest wedding dress trends, I no-ticed that they all had a touch of pastel colour, so I added this blush pink sash and big bow at the back made out of very soft fine tulle, plus a blush wedding veil. I actually took this idea from Wedding Day magazine’s latest issue! The necklace with the antique cameo was an idea from vogue Sposa. My Mum bought the cameo for me, and we designed the frame and got it done at a local jewellery shop in Marsa who did a wonderful job. I will treasure this cameo throughout my whole life.” The bride’s make-up was done by our very own
team member Daniela Cassar who needs no in-troduction with WD readers. Her work speaks for itself as she always gives the bride a beau-tiful natural glow by perfectly enhancing her features.
not many grooms could get away with Gustav’s cool attire but it is obvious he has the confi-dence to wear it. He paired a pale blue blazer and dusty pink trousers purchased from tom-my hilfiger and hackett London. His blue suede shoes were worn without socks, the epitome of style.
Nikita’s bridesmaid was a university friend whom she has known for a long number of years. “It was not easy to just choose one since I have many girl friends who I am close to,” the bride admits. “I asked her to choose something she will wear again and again, a dress she knows she would enjoy and so she did. I did not want to choose a typical chiffon flowing dress so we went for a 1920’s style dress in an old rose col-our which matched perfectly with the theme of wedding, which was shabby chic & vintage.”

As this was a small wedding, the couple decid-ed to keep things simple and did not have any ushers. Instead of a videographer, one of their friends filmed some very cool shots with his Go Pro camera.
“We always wanted a small intimate wedding, something different from the usual ones. We hate the stiffness of the traditional weddings and we did everything not to have that. In fact, the dress code for men was no formal suits and ties. Special thanks must go to our wedding planner Bernice Bugeja from Love is…, who executed our ideas wonderfully and was always there to help us choose our suppliers and at-tended all the meetings. She was a great help indeed.” Bernice created an utterly romantic theme, which blended perfectly with the many possi-bilities provided by this charming venue.
The couple decided a lot of things together, al-though Nikita says she took care of the many little details which perhaps only brides tend to go into: “the bird cages centre pieces, the mini cakes souvenirs, the typewriter guest book, the old books, the heel protectors for stilettos not to sink in the lawn, the old luggage with their

pictures, the Bedouin area. There was a lot of Internet browsing and magazines involved, es-pecially Italian ones,” Nikita says.
cEREMONY & cELEBRAtIONS
The Mass was held at the tal-Providenza chap-el in Siggiewi. Nikita says she was relaxed until she reached the chapel. They used their own Porsche to get to the venue with the groom do-ing the driving. “We couldn’t have chosen a better priest: Fa-ther Joe Abela, was excellent. People were actu-ally clapping after his rather funny, remarkable words.”Flowers were in the hands of Bjorn Borg from Floreal.
The venue was a beautiful private villa, with a massive lawn, palm trees, pool, waterfall. “There was nothing else I could ask for! Plus we had access to the stables and I love horses. It was a place in the countryside, so romantic and so very fairytale style.”
It was the catering which was truly unique. “We wanted the food to be of the highest quality and freshly cooked at the venue. So we ordered our catering from a Lebanese restaurant who
custom-made a menu just for us.” People could help themselves as many a times as they wanted.
They even managed to make the cake fit into a “shabby chic” theme. The top tier was a round cake with pale blue icing and blush pink flowers on top. The cir-cumference was decorated with lace. The second and third tier were mini cakes in pale yellow, pale pink and pale blue. One had an icing bow, one had icing flowers and one was decorated with icing as a bird cage. The mini cakes were packed in PvC boxes and tied with a brown string enclosed with a thank you sticker and given out as souvenirs to the guests. “This was something which was really appreciated,” says Nikita.
The setting allowed for some very inter-esting wedding photos. Even a visiting frog next to the pool got into the picture as the photographer Fran managed to get a good shot of him before he was caught. “We also took some shots in the stables

All in all though, nothing could mar the perfectness of this shabby chic wedding which turned out just as the couple had dreamed of.

Apart from meeting through friends, perhaps one of the most common places for people to meet is at work. That’s exactly what happened with Chris and Jenny.“We both used to work for a communications agency, Chris is a graphic designer and I worked as a market-ing executive, but we rarely worked on the same pro-jects. Sparks didn’t exactly fly immediately, and we got to know each other slowly over the following year. Around another year later we realized that it had developed into something much deeper. From that moment onwards we both knew that this was it, and finally made it officially permanent a couple of years later.” As romantic proposals go, this one certainly hit all the right notes.Jenny says that Chris tried his hardest to get the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra to play an orchestral adaptation of a song by The Scorpions for the proposal, which was originally recorded by the Berlin Philharmonic Orches-tra. He was even in contact with the orchestra in Berlin, and with the composer of the orchestrated song in order to get the rights to the score. Unfortunately, in the end, despite trying their hardest to help, the orchestra could not play this song for specific reasons. “Chris’ proposal was a surprise he masked by claiming we were attending a family bbq at Golden bay. To lessen the chance of me realizing, he also wore casual clothes as he usually does for these types of meets. He timed our arrival at Golden bay with the sun setting, where “by chance” we met a small group of friends who form part of the band Scarlet Sally. Thinking they were rehearsing, they performed an acoustic rendition of our favourite song (which was to be our first dance song too), during

which Chris went down on one knee and popped out a beautiful ring. He even had a romantic picnic set up, with candles and champagne to celebrate.”

For her dress, Jenny turned to her aunt, Josephine Arri-go Azzopardi “an amazing seamstress”, who also helped her to design it. “I wanted something that was me, and that Chris would love. Something simple, natural and romantic. Even though I went to try on a few dresses and I loved a few of them, there was always that something which I wasn’t completely convinced of. Luckily my aunt intervened and together we came up with the style that I was really looking for.” Bridal shoes are always an important consideration for any bride: they have be as elegant as possible for the oc-casion, but they must also be comfortable for what is go-ing to be a very long day. For this reason, British Shoe Store in valletta was the ideal choice as they are one of the few places which make custom-made shoes to en-sure the best possible fit. Boasting a long tradition in this business, they are considered to be an establishment in the capital city, with an excellent location in the heart of St John’s Square. British Shoe Store can also provide shoes for the whole bridal party, including the mothers of the bride and groom. Bags to match are also available.
WD | 53
Members of the family made up the bridal party. “I loved having them in the wedding, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way”, Jenny says. “My maid of honour was not only my best friend, she’s one of the best peo-ple I know, and she made the whole process of plan-ning and preparing for the wedding so much easier and fun. My sister was my witness, the biggest constant in my life. For their dresses, I only asked them to chose their own dress based on a generic, flowing Grecian style which I liked. They then chose according to what suited them best individually. Their dresses were also made by my fantastic aunt.”
The hairstyles were created by Chris’ sister Mandy who has her own salon, Styling by Mandy.Jenny’s hair was styled into soft loose curls with two tendrils framing her face. The rest of her long hair was left hanging down her back in an easygoing style, se-cured by two lovely headpieces.
Chris grew up with three other guys who were his neighbours at the time, and he wanted all three of them to be next to him when he got married. One of them was his witness, and the other two shared the role of best man. The ushers were another two of the couple’s closest friends. All their suits were provided by cefai Formal Wear.
Being a graphic designer, it was natural for Chris to be very involved in the preparations “and of course he felt
WD | 54
the need to brand the whole wedding”, says Jenny. “He designed all the material for the wedding himself; the invitations, seating charts, table names… you name it. He even chose the fabric for the bridesmaids’ dresses. My own dress and flowers were the only thing that Chris wasn’t involved in as I wanted to keep them as a sur-prise. Everything else we did together, with very little input from other people, albeit with tonnes of support from both our families.”
CErEMoNY & CELEBratIoNS
“We were both feeling perfectly fine and relaxed the day of the wedding”, says the bride. However, getting dressed presented a slight challenge. “My sister had spent about 15 minutes buttoning the back of my dress at home when, upon reaching the last button, she realized she had two loops left. She was not at all pleased (in a funny way), but luckily the error was found to be a few buttons down. Of course, we all had to perform a victory dance when they were all successfully buttoned up!”The nerves only started to set in once Jenny was on her way to the Church.“I felt extremely nervous the minute I stepped into the car and we left home to go to the church. I felt physically
WD | 55
sick with anxiety at that point, although my bridesmaid and father kept me calm, but once I saw Chris at the church it all melted away.” Chris, on his part, says “I was quite calm throughout the day, and the only thing I was worried about was if I was going to forget my vows once I’m actually looking at Jenny during the most important moment for us. My friends, who were with me all morning, also helped in keeping me calm by simply being themselves on the day. It’s only when I saw Jenny walking down the aisle that my heart started beating quite fast. I was overcome with emotion, she was captivating.”The old parish church of St Gregory’s chapel in Zejtun was the setting for their wedding Mass. For Jenny, the Mass was the most amazing and impor-tant event. “Fr Martin Cilia is one of the most inspir-ing and truly good people around. We’re very blessed to have met him and have him in our lives. Also, Fr John Scicluna, who has always greeted us with the most wel-coming, enthusiastic and loving smile.”
The wedding dinner was held at the elegant Phoenicia hotel. “We chose the Phoenicia for two main reasons; first, for practical reasons as we wanted a sit-down din-ner. with a guest list of 300 people, this was one of the few venues that offered both an indoor and outdoor venue that could accommodate this amount of people.

Secondly, we find both the indoor and outdoor locations among the most beautiful there are in Malta.”
Having a seated dinner for such a large number of people is no small feat, and Jenny says that thankfully, the cater-ers were very efficient and offered a lovely personalized service to all their guests.
The three tier wedding cake had two tiers of chocolate fudge, while the third was the traditional almond wed-ding cake.Jenny explains that the setup of their wedding was quite unusual when compared to other local weddings. “Af-ter Mass, we had an hour and a half in the gardens at the Phoenicia with welcome drinks and canapés, dur-ing which we greeted the guests and took some photos. It was then followed by a two hour seated dinner with some live acoustic music, and ended with some danc-ing. We decided to go for this set-up to have a certain intimate feeling to the wedding, especially since all our guests were family and very close friends and colleagues. Since they were seated for some time, the guests did not get tired, and when the time came to dance they all came out and joined us. The atmosphere was lovely, and it also gave us ample time to talk to each other during meals as well as enjoying each other on our wedding day, which was the most important element for us.”
All went smoothly that day, although the couple agree that no mishaps would have bothered them. “Funnily enough, everyone seemed to forget how to spell ‘Chris’,

Natasha and Etienne had known each other be-fore, but it was only when they re-met ten years later through a friend that the relationship de-veloped. After a couple of months they rented an apartment and a year later bought a place to-gether in which they have lived for nine years .
“We never really made a plan to get married but we spoke about it from time to time …then Etienne proposed and I said yes! He proposed while we were on holiday in London for NyE 2013. we were at Winter Wonderland (Christ-mas Fun Park) in Hyde Park on a ferris wheel and Etienne popped the question…it was very romantic.”

Natasha’s dress was made by her mother who put her heart and soul in to it “just to make me hap-py”. It turned out to be the dress she had always wanted and it came out just as they had designed it. The bride decided to only have a maid of hon-our, her best friend Schevon Camilleri. “We have known each other for 25 years and ever since we were young we always said that we would be each other’s maids of honour. I let her choose whatever she wanted for a dress as long as it was black.”

and it was the perfect spot for this black & white themed wedding. A candy buffet was set up by the experienced people from candylicious who created a wonderful array of delicious sweets and candy for guests to indulge in.
The couple decided that they did not want a tradi-tional almond wedding cake and chose a different flavour, they also had cupcakes instead of cakes for the witnesses. “I had seen the design online and the pastry chef got it spot on.”
Natasha says she was very relaxed throughout the day but 30 minutes before the ceremony she was definitely excited, “but it all passed after the cer-emony was over.”
“Our day was just perfect just as we wanted it to be. It was small, intimate, fun and filled with our dear families and close friends. We would like to thank everyone who made it so special. We will never forget it.”

Michèle and Malcolm met at secondary school. At first their relationship had some hiccups, and they even split up at one point. The second time round, however, they kept going strong. “we have been together since 2002! There are many reasons why we wanted to get married, practical and situational. If I had to really think about it, I guess we both saw that it was inevi-table, and we wanted to take our relationship to the next step. He is my best friend, and as far as I know, I am his. I could not imagine spending my life with anyone else,” says Michèle. What makes a proposal romantic? I suppose it is one which touches the heart, and for Michèle the way it happened was just right. “It might not seem romantic for some readers, such as when you hear about a proposal on the Eiffel tower and what not. In my case it was on my favourite beach in Gozo. we went up for the weekend to celebrate Malcolm’s graduation and he was very cautious about leaving our bags unattended while we were swimming, but I thought that was quite normal for him. I had
no idea that there was the ring inside!”Michèle didn’t want an engagement ring as she reasoned that they had mutually decided to get married. “So I wasn’t expecting an official pro-posal either. We often joked about it, however, how it would be done and where he would do it. So when he was telling me how much he loves me and being all romantic and stuff, I assumed he was joking, as usual. When he asked, will you marry me? I paused, for comic relief, and said ‘yes’ in a funny way… as usual! But this time he got out a ring! I could not believe it; I was in shock. I kept staring at it for the whole weekend, still in disbelief.”

For her dress, Michèle wanted something simple, elegant, and slightly fitted, as she was not really into puffy dresses. “I like them on others, but they’re not for me. Mine had a bit of a mermaid finish, but not too much.

In all honesty, my sister found it for me and man-aged to convince me that it would really suit me. It was just what I imagined, very simple in its style with a bit of detail and not too girly, girly. What I wanted to go for originally was just an A-line ivory dress, with no detail what so ever, but then my sister told me, ‘if you do not wear something a bit fancy on your wedding day, when will you ever?’ And she was right!”
Michèle chose her two closest friends to be her brides-maids and her youngest sister as the maid of honour. It was even easier to choose the ushers, as the couple again chose their closest friends, who also happen to be the boyfriends of the bridesmaids.
While Malcolm and Michèle shared in the prepara-tions for the their big day, she points out that her fam-ily also helped a lot and she could not have done it all without their help. “My sister gave me a lot of her con-tacts, as she had just got married only four months be-fore me. Plus, my other sisters were also very present.”
Michèle was certainly no Bridzilla, and admits she is not very fussy about such things. Everything was planned quite easily and the only thing the bride really insisted on was that she wanted all the girls in her bridal party wearing different colours. I don’t really like it when the bridesmaids and maid of honour all wear the same colour. I think because it was a summer wedding, I managed to pull it off and they looked beautiful.”
When it came to choosing the food items for the ca-tering, she roped in her work colleagues who came up with suggestions.
thE cEREMONY & cELEBRAtIONS
The venue was certainly the most unique aspect about this wedding as it was the first time a recep-tion was held at the Royal Malta Golf club, a deci-sion taken for very sentimental reasons. “Malcolm’s
WD | 70
grandfather is an honorary member at the club, and my father suggested that we have it there. As soon as we saw the venue together, we knew this was it! What I liked most about the place was that it was surrounded by greenery and it was all open air.”
Nothing about this couple’s wedding was run-of-the-mill, and this included the cake which was certainly not your traditional Maltese wedding cake. “We had three different cakes, not stacked up on top of each other as usual, but sep-arated into three tiers.” True to her laid-back nature, Michèle was quite relaxed throughout the whole day and in fact, she says she could not stop giggling. “The only moment I got a bit nervous was when we arrived for the Mass. My father suggested to the driver to wait round the corner because we were 10 minutes early. Those 10 minutes felt like a lifetime, I guess because it was the only time during the day when I actually paused. Plus I knew that everyone was inside, ready… waiting for me!” Whenever we interview couples we always ask whether they have any anecdotes about things going wrong. “It would not be us if things went smoothly, and I love that about us! To tell you the honest truth, we did not really get married on the 29th of June, but on the 30th. when the Mass was ready and kisses exchanged, it came time to sign the papers of-ficially, by us and the witnesses. Well…we did not have the papers! Long story, short, Mal forgot the papers behind him
and we had to wake up early the next day and go get them signed, slightly hung-over!” It’s a good thing both the bride and groom happen to be very easygoing, because they took this mishap in their stride. “The priest reassured us that in all his years, this had never happened!” the bride laughs.
The day was everything they could have wished for - the weather turned out to be windy and breezy, on a day that should have been hot and sticky, “and I thank my uncle for this!” The couple also received an amazing surprise from Malcolm’s cousins, who as a wedding gift got them a photo booth. But best of all, is something truly unique for a Mal-tese wedding as the bride and groom drove a golf buggy!
“Ultimately what made it special for me was that I was do-ing this with Malcolm and with all my close family and friends present. We had the time of our life, it was an amaz-ing, and at a one point, thanks to the great after party, also a very loud day!”
Instead of souvenirs, the couple made a donation to the Sliema Creche.

Elisa and Lydon’s relationship started as a friendship when they were in their teens. “Since one of his best friends, Bjorn was in the same school, every Friday after work Lydon would come and pick us all up. They came to be known as “Freaky Fridays’’. We used to hang out in the same group of friends and one evening it lead to some-thing more. Seven years down the line we got engaged and married a year later.”on elisa’s 24th birthday, Lydon surprised her by organ-izing a weekend away at Golden Sands. “Upon entering the room, I find the bed covered in petals and a beau-tiful diamond ring. I was over the moon and extremely surprised since Lydon is not generally the romantic type. And obviously I said yes.”
thE WEDDING
Elisa chose a mermaid style for her dress. “We visited loads

of shops and could not find the dress I had in mind. I would not give up and kept search-ing and waiting. One evening I received a text message from a bridal shop informing me that they had just received their new stock. I quickly went over to the shop with my Mum. I tried on “the dress” and called my cousin - and maid of honour - to come quick to see the dress before I said yes to the dress since I value her opinion and she would tell me if she thought it was not right. She came quick. She loved it and we sealed the deal.” Elisa always knew she wanted her cousins and closest friends as her bridesmaids. Her two flower girls were also members of her family.“I wanted their total involvement with the
dresses, so that they would be comfortable and happy with them. We had them made by my husband’s aunt. I was very lucky as she was extremely patient with me and I trust her completely since she is very good at her work.”relatives from Lydon’s side were the ushers and page boy.
While Lydon was responsible for getting the house ready and handled most of that him-self, Elisa planned the wedding “with my Mum’s heavy and invaluable input. The only thing Lydon and I did discuss was the after party. We both wanted a great after party and in fact partied through the early hours of the
WD | 77
morning with our closest friends,” she says. For the after party they had three DJ’s who are all good friends of the couple, A-call, Bjan Jensen and Kurt. “They were more than happy to play for us and we were really thankful for that.”
thE cEREMONY & cELEBRAtIONS
On the morning of the wedding Elisa’s brides-maids were extremely excited and created the perfect vibe throughout the day during the preparations, which helped the bride to relax. “However, I must say, we all were very emo-tional when I received a bouquet of roses and a card with a beautiful message from Lydon. On our way to the church we all had a blast singing and screaming with excitement. Upon turning the final corner towards the church, however, I froze and tears started streaming down my face. My father tried calming me down and once we stepped onto the church steps I somehow regained my composure.”
WD | 78
After the wedding ceremony at St Francis church, B’Kara, the reception was held at a castle which Elisa describes as looking like a fairytale, especially when it was lit up in purple with specialized lighting. “We wanted an out-door venue that was secluded and gave us the opportunity to party through the night. As such we had no particular theme. We kept most dec-orations in white and added touches of Tiffany blue to complement the bridesmaid’s dresses.”The couple didn’t want standard food so they selected food items very carefully and ensured they were all unique. They also had a live sushi bar that was very popular with their guests and created a lovely atmosphere.
“We also wanted a plain and simple cake with plain white strips wrapped around each tier to give it an extremely elegant touch.”Elisa says everything went perfectly except for one moment. “Lydon is the shy type and he was not particularly looking forward to having all eyes on him during our first dance. This mo-ment was in fact lengthened due to the band
WD | 80
somehow misplacing our first dance. So we spent a good 2- 3 minutes with everyone staring at us while the band found the song,” the bride recalls with a fond smile.
Describing the whole day as perfect, Elisa says they wouldn’t change any part of it as everything went even better than they could have ever imag-ined. “This was thanks to the help of our wonder-ful parents, particularly my mother without whose constant help and support I would not have man-aged, family and friends and most of all, each other. All our guests enjoyed the evening thoroughly and created a wonderful atmosphere and a memorable evening which we will treasure forever.”Instead of souvenirs, the couple preferred to give a donation for Puttinu cares.
