OPENING FACE-OFF Mavericks, Huskies and Falcons Lead WCHA Top-10 Presence: Entering the stretch run of the 2014-15 season, the WCHA has three teams in the top 10 of both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine opinion polls, along with the PairWise rankings. Minnesota State continues to lead all three rankings; Michigan Tech is fifth in the polls and sixth in the PairWise; and, Bowling Green is eighth in all three ledgers. Winning Hockey: The Mavericks and Huskies are 1-2 in the country for wins this season, while MSU, MTU and BGSU give the WCHA an NCAA-best three of the nation's top 10 winning percentages. Minnesota State's .810 mark (23-5-1) leads the country, Michigan Tech is tied for third at .750 (22-7-1) and Bowling Green is sixth at .696 (17-6-5). Historically Good?: Minnesota State (19 league wins with six games to play), Michigan Tech (17 with six) and Bowling Green (13 with eight) are all within striking distance of WCHA top-10 single-season conference win totals. Reaching 20 WCHA wins would match 16 other teams for the 10th-highest single-season total in conference history (both Ferris State and Minnesota State hit the mark last season). Twenty-one wins, the ninth-best total in WCHA history, has not been accomplished since North Dakota went 21-6-1 in 2010-11. By running the table, either MTU or MSU could finish with 23 or 25 WCHA wins, respectively, which would tie for either the seventh- or fifth-most in conference history. The Playoff Picture: Minnesota State, Michigan Tech and Bowling Green have all clinched spots in the 2015 WCHA playoffs, while the Mavericks and Huskies (for the first time since 1992-93) have also secured home-ice advantage. Any combination of two Bowling Green wins, one Bowling Green win and a loss each for Bemidji State and Ferris State, or two losses each for Bemidji State and Ferris State would give the Falcons home-ice for the first round. Meanwhile, the remaining six playoff-eligible teams can all mathematically finish anywhere from fourth to 10th place, with eight games remaining for all but Lake Superior State (six contests). Chasing Hobey: Among the WCHA's seven Hobey Baker Award candidates, MSU's Bryce Gervais is now third nationally with 20 goals, MTU's Tanner Kero is tied for seventh with 37 points, MSU's Matt Leitner is third with 25 assists and MTU's Jamie Phillips is in the top 10 for wins (1st - 21), winning percentage (5th - .768) and GAA (7th - 1.85). Nonconference Success: The WCHA wrapped up its regular season nonconference schedule with a .507 out-of-league winning percentage (30-29-9). The 30 victories surpassed the league's entire 2013-14 output, in 16 fewer games (26- 46-12, .381). WCHA teams also posted a 15-12-2 mark (.552) against ranked nonconference opponents. BY THE NUMBERS 1 of 3: Bowling Green, St. Lawrence and Yale are the only three D-I schools to have a winning record despite not having a single 20-point scorer on the roster this season. THE WEEK AHEAD Home Ice Battle: Fourth-place Northern Michigan hosts Bemidji State, one of two teams tied for fifth among playoff- eligible teams. The Beavers are four points behind the Wildcats, but own a 1-0-1 edge this season against NMU. Jockeying for Position: Lake Superior State and Alabama Huntsville, the two teams tied for seventh among playoff- eligible teams, face off this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The teams split their November series in Alabama. You Look Familiar: No. 8 Bowling Green and Ferris State play for the second straight weekend, this time in Big Rapids, Mich. The Falcons are looking to clinch home-ice, while the Bulldogs are trying to get back into the top four. League Leaders Travel to Alaska: No. 1 Minnesota State travels to Fairbanks for a series against the Nanooks, while No. 5 Michigan Tech - which trails the first-place Mavericks by four points in the league standings - visits Alaska Anchorage. Despite trailing in both games, the Falcons came back with third period goals to earn the pair of wins. BGSU, entering the weekend ranked first nationally on the penalty kill, was tested early and often Friday night. The Falcons committed eight penalties but were able to kill off seven of them. Junior G Tommy Burke backstopped the unit, stopping 18-of-19 shots on the night, while sophomore F Kevin Dufour and junior F Ben Murphy both found the back of the net in the winning effort. Saturday again kept the penalty kill busy, providing BGSU with 13 penalty minutes to work through. The top unit was up to the task though, and limited the Bulldogs to just five total power-play shots. On the offensive side, Murphy was successful for the second night in a row, recording two points (1g-1a). Helping to keep the game close for FSU, the brother duo of freshman F Andrew Dorantes and D Tyler Dorantes each netted a goal apiece. NanooksUniversity of Alaska• Last weekend, Alaska ended its four game losing streak and six game winless

streak with a sweep of Lake Superior State to move into fifth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

• Garrick Perry scored the eventual game winning goals in both games as the Nanooks won Friday night, 3-1, and Saturday night, 2-1. Tyler Morley and Jared Larson scored in Friday’s win while Shawn Hochhausen opened the scoring on Saturday.

• The Mavericks and Nanooks met earlier this season in Mankato. Alaska took the first game against then ranked No. 2 Minnesota State, 5-4, in overtime with Austin Vieth netting twice, including the game-winner. Tyler Morley also scored twice with Tayler Munson contributing in the win. The following night, Minnesota State bounced back to beat Alaska, 5-2.

• Historically, the Nanooks have faired well against their high-powered opposition. Dating back to the their first meeting in 1982, Alaska is 12-2-0 against the Mavericks. Prior to last season’s series, Alaska was 10-0-0 against then Mankato State from 1982-1995.

• Alaska has handed the No. 1 team in the country one of its five losses, including only two in the conference. In fact, the Mavericks have not lost a conference game since the Nanooks won in overtime (Minnesota State’s loss to Bemidji State on Januray 24 was a non-conference game played in the North Star College Cup).

• The last time Alaksa played on Valentine’s Day was last season, when the Nanooks defeated Michigan Tech as part of a WCHA series sweep. Prior to that, Alaska had not played on the holiday since 2008 (a vacated win over Western Michigan).

• Nanook defensemen played a part in every assisted goal this week¬end. The two that were unassisted (an empty netter and 4-on-4 breakaway) were the result of strong defensive plays forcing turnovers in the neautral zone. Colton Parayko, Zach Frye, Josh Atkinson and Trevor Campbell all recorded assists. Of note, the Nanooks are 5-0-0 when Atkinson assists a goal.

• Perry scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season over the weekend, and each proved to be the eventual game winner. He scored Alaska’s second goal in the first period in Friday’s 3-1 win, a power play goal, and its second in Saturday’s 2-1 win. Perry is now fourth on the team in goals (6) and points (17) and is third with 17 points.

• Alaska goalie Sean Cahill earned two wins in Alaska’s sweep of LSSU while posting a save percentage of .951 and allowing just one goal in each game. He made 39 combined saves and the only two goals he allowed were power play goals.

• Alaska is undefeated when it scores four or more goals this season. The Nanooks boast a 7-0-1 record when they post 40 or more shots, including the two wins against LSSU last weekend.

• With Alaska wrapping up its final home weekend of the 2014-15 season, the Nanooks will honor its seven seniors this year in Justin Tateson, Garrick Perry, Trevor Campbell, Nolan Kaiser, Nolan Youngmun, Jared Larson and Sean Cahill.

BeaversBemidji State University• Bemidji State suffered a pair of losses at the hands of No. 5 Michigan Tech

Feb. 6-7. The Huskies won the opener 3-1 and edged BSU 2-1 in the finale to sweep the season series and hand the Beavers their six series sweep of the season.

• BSU is now 4-10-1 versus nationally-ranked teams this season. BSU has defeated: No. 2 North Dakota, Oct. 10; No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, Jan. 23, No. 1 Minnesota State, Jan. 24; and No. 6 Bowling Green, Jan. 30.

• Friday’s assist marked the 20th point of the season for senior Matt Prapavessis, marking the second consecutive season the defender has topped 20 points.

• Prapavessis is among the top 20 Division I-era scorers at BSU and is tied for 22nd on BSU’s all-time defenseman scoring list with 66 points (15g-51a) in 140 games as a Beaver.

• Charlie O’Connor, BSU’s top goal-scorer this season with nine, added to his career-high point total Friday netting his fourth assist of the season to total 13 points.

• Sam Windle led the Beavers with seven blocked shots in the series. He has a team-best 64 this season to rank third in the WCHA and fifth in the country.

• The Beavers allowed their nation-leading eighth short-handed goal of the season last Friday -- marking a BSU single-season Division I-era record for short-handed goals allowed in a season.

• BSU is 1-14-3 when scoring three or fewer goals; however, the Beavers are 9-0-1 when netting four or more this season.

• Goaltender Michael Bitzer made his 11th and 12th consecutive starts in the series. Since Dec. 12 the freshman is 6-4-2 in 723:52 minutes played with a 1.41 goals against average, a .938 save percentage with three shutouts.

• The BSU power-play unit was 1-for-9 at Michigan Tech. The Beavers are now 16-for-105 (.152) on the man advantage this season. They are 11-for-74 (.149) in WCHA play to rank fifth in the league.

• The BSU penalty-kill unit held the Huskies' scoreless on all seven of their power-play opportunities in the series. BSU improves to 93-for-111 (.838) on the season, while it is 64-of-75 (.853) on the kill in league play to rank fourth.

• Last time BSU surrendered a power-play goal was a 5-on-3 opportunity in the second period of its Jan. 24 game versus No. 1 Minnesota State. The BSU penalty-kill has snuffed out 27 of its opponents last 29 man advantage opportunities (.931).

• Cory Ward has recorded a point in five of the Beavers’ last seven games (2g-3a).

• The Beavers have struggled on the road this season. They are now 1-10-2 on their opponents’ ice (including 0-4-0 in the state of Michigan) and seek their first true road win since Oct. 10 at then-No. 2 North Dakota (5-1).

• Bemidji State returns to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend for a two-game WCHA set at Northern Michigan. BSU and NMU are tied, 3-3-2, in a series that got its start in 2009.

• Bemidji State is unbeaten when playing the Wildcats on their home ice (1-0-1). BSU’s last game at Barry Events Center was a 5-0 victory Oct. 24, 2009.

• The Beavers took three points from NMU earlier this season, winning 4-2 Dec. 12 at Sanford Center before tying 1-1 (OT) in the series finale.

• This season, the Olympic Ice sheet has not been kind to BSU. BSU is without a win, 0-2-2, dropping a pair of games versus Minnesota at Mariucci Arena and settling for a pair of ties versus the Seawolves at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.

• BSU has averaged 3.0 goals per game in its four previous games on Olympic ice this season, while its power-play unit is 6-of-19 (.316) in those games. Prapavessis has excelled on the larger sheet this season (2g-3a).

FalconsBowling Green State University• Bowling Green and Ferris State square off for the second consecutive

weekend as the two teams head to Michigan for a two-game set Friday and Saturday.

• With two comeback wins last weekend, Bowling Green has retaken the lead in the all-time series against Ferris State, holding a 57-56-12 edge. Bowling Green is 26-32-7 all-time at Ferris State and is 0-2-1 in the past three contests since a 2-1 overtime win on Feb. 15, 2013.

• The Falcons won their 13th conference game, equaling their total from a year ago.

• BGSU will enter the weekend eighth in the USCHO poll, earning a top 10 spot in the rankings for the fifth consecutive week. The Falcons have spent five consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

• With Falcon Hockey’s steady improvement over the course of the season, the BGSU Ice Arena has seen an increase in fans at home games. Three of the last six home games have seen attendances over 3,200 and the BGSU Ice Arena is averaging 2,876 fans per game this year, an increase of more than 800 fans per game over last year’s 2,022 average.

• Amazingly, BGSU does not have a single Falcon among the top 100 point scorers in the country despite having the 16th-best offense in the nation. The Falcons, though, boast impressive depth as 12 players have at least 10 points and 20 have scored at least one goal. BGSU is one of three teams (along with St. Lawrence and Yale) to have a winning record but not a single player with 20 points on the year.

• The last time Bowling Green won 17 of its first 28 games was back in 1994-95.

• BGSU Hockey is 11-0-2 on Saturdays this year, outscoring opponents 45-24 in those contests. Dating back to three Saturday wins to close out the 2013-14 season, the Falcons are unbeaten in 16 consecutive Saturday contests. The Falcons are 6-5-3 on Fridays and 0-1 on Sundays this year.

• BGSU is 9-3-4 away from the BGSU Ice Arena this year (including a tie at Fifth Third Field in Toledo). The Falcons last won nine road games in a single season in 2011-12 and have not won more than that since the 1995-96 team won 11 away from Bowling Green.

• Junior goaltender Tommy Burke played between the pipes in both games this past weekend against Ferris State. It’s just the second time this year that the Falcons have used the same goaltender on back-to-back nights. Dating back to last year, the Falcons have swept four consecutive series’ when playing just one goaltender.

• By killing off 11-of-12 power play opportunities over the past weekend against Ferris State, the Falcons remain the nation’s best unit at 93.1 percent (108-for-116). Since Nov. 8, BGSU has killed off 79-of-83 power play opportunities (95.2 percent).

• In all, Bowling Green is 125-for-229 (54.6 percent) on special teams, which ranks fourth in the nation for combined special teams.

• BGSU came from behind to win both games over the past weekend and the Falcons have now won four times this year after trailing in a contest.

• BGSU’s 2-1 win Friday was the first time this year that the Falcons have won a game in which it scored two or fewer goals.

• When Ben Murphy and Pierre-Luc Mercier scored just 80 seconds apart in the third period Saturday against Ferris State, it was the eighth time this year that the Falcons have scored twice in less than two minutes.

BulldogsFerris State University• Ferris State opened a four-game series against nationally eighth-ranked

Bowling Green with a pair of one-goal setbacks this past weekend in Ohio. The two teams play for a second consectuive weekend on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 13-14) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

• Bulldog freshman Tyler Dorantes scored his first collegiate goal in the opening period of Saturday's 3-2 setback at the BGSU Ice Arena. He tallied the game's initial goal. His brother, fellow freshman Andrew Dorantes, scored later in the stanza as the two brothers accounted for both of FSU's markers in the game.

• Ferris State scored the opening goal against the Falcons in both of this past weekend's contests. FSU was also perfect on the penalty kill for the weekend, going 9-for-9 overall.

• Senior goaltender CJ Motte is four wins away from matching school-record holder Mike Brown's all-time mark of 63 career victories. He's among the nominees for the 2015 Hobey Baker Award.

• Ferris State sophomore forward Kyle Schempp picked up his fifth point in five games with an assist on Friday evening. The New York Islanders draft pick did not play on Saturday due to injury.

• FSU is presently in the midst of an eight-game stretch versus nationally top 10 ranked foes as FSU squares off against Bowling Green in four-straight contests, which comes on the heels of four consecutive matchups with Minnesota State.

• Motte is one of the candidates for the Senior CLASS Award in collegiate hockey, which is presented to an athlete who excels both on and off the ice. This year marks the fourth consecutive year in which the Bulldogs have had one of the 20 national candidates and fifth time in the last six seasons.

• The Bulldogs now own a 56-57-21 all-time mark versus Bowling Green after this past weekend's series. A year ago, the Bulldogs topped the Falcons 4-2 in the last matchup on Nov. 16 in Big Rapids following a 3-3 overtime tie the night before (Nov. 15).

• FSU has posted a 15-6 mark against Bowling Green in the last 21 matchups and won five of seven meetings during the Bulldogs' historic 2011-12 season in addition to three of four in 2012-13.

• Ferris State and Bowling Green will face off for the 136th and 137th times this weekend in a series that dates back to 1978.

• FSU has won or tied nine of the 12 regular-season matchups between the two teams over the last three seasons. However, the Falcons pulled out a win over Ferris State in the 2011-12 best-of-three CCHA Tournament second round playoff series at the Ewigleben Ice Arena to move on to Joe Louis Arena. Despite the setback in the CCHA Tournament in 2011-12, the Bulldogs responded by winning the NCAA Midwest Regional and advancing to the Frozen Four only a couple weeks later.

• The Bulldogs have prevailed in 19 of the last 25 meetings to date, which includes a 9-4 road mark.

of Abel Arena this weekend to square off with the Chargers of Alabama Hunstville.

• After going on a three game winning streak, including a sweep of Bemidji State, the Lakers have now lost three straight games and come in to the matchup 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. The Chargers, after going on their own run, have come back down to 4-6-0 in their last 10.

• For both teams this weekend, the points will prove critical. As both teams come into the matchup tied for the eighth spot in the conference standings with 12 points. If either team earns a sweep during the weekend, they could move in to a tie with either Bemidji State or Ferris State who are both four points ahead at 16 and tied for sixth in the standings.

• Last weekend the Lakers were led by freshman goaltender Gordon Defiel who put up 80 saves on the 84 shots he faced against Alaska. While the offense sputtered for the Lakers, Defiel shined in allowing just two goals each night. Defiel posted the league’s second-best save-percentage on the weekend (.952) while facing the league’s most shots at 84. His 2.05 goals against average pitted him tied for fifth behind the four goaltenders from the teams earning weekend-sweeps. • The Lakers will have their final bye week following the home series with the Chargers before they make their shortest road trip of the season: 164-mile jaunt to Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan to finish the Cappo Cup series. Following the final road trip of the season with the Wildcats, the Lakers end with Ferris State at home on March 6-7.

HuskiesMichigan Technological University• Michigan Tech defeated Bemidji State 3-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday for its

eighth WCHA series sweep of the season. The Huskies won the MacInnes Cup for the third year in a row, outscoring its opponent on Winter Carnival.

• Michigan Tech improved its record to 22-7-1 overall. The last time Tech won 22 games in a season was during the 1982-83 campaign.

• Saturday's win locked up a WCHA home playoff series on March 13-15. It will be a best-of-three series against a to-be-determined opponent. Tech last hosted a WCHA home playoff series during the 1992-93 season.

• Riley Sweeney was named Winter Carnival MVP as he scored the game's first goal each night for his first two of the season. Sweeney has two goals and five assists this season. His 146 games played in a Husky uniform lead the team.
