at Alaska Anchorage 4, No. 15 Bemidji State 1No. 15 Bemidji State 1, Alaska Anchorage 0(Dec. 30 and 31 at Sullivan Arena; Anchorage, Alaska) League-leading Bemidji State picked up play after the holiday break as the No. 15 Beavers traveled north to Anchorage to take on the Seawolves, who sprung the upset Friday to earn a series split. Friday afternoon, the Seawolves used a pair of first period goals to propel to an upset over the Beavers. Mason Mitchell and Alex Jackstadt scored within 40 seconds of each other near the midway point of the first to give the home team an early 2-0 lead. It would remain there until eight minutes into the final frame, when Bemidji State senior Phillip Marinaccio cut the lead in half with his eighth goal of the season. But the Seawolves would hold on for the 4-1 victory. Michael Bitzer was out for redemption on Saturday afternoon, as the junior recorded a 17-save shutout. The Beavers used a first period goal off the stick of Leo Fitzgerald to take the lead, where Bitzer and the defense held off the rest of the way as the visiting squad finished weekend with a 1-0 victory.

at Bowling Green 3, RIT 0(Dec. 30 at the Huntington Center; Toledo, Ohio) Bowling Green ended the year right, as the Falcons took home a 3-0 shutout victory over RIT in the first part of the Winterfest Doubleheader in Toledo. Mitch McLain netted the first goal of the night to put the Falcons up 1-0 midway through the first frame. Before the buzzer sounded, junior Brett D’Andrea doubled the lead with a power-play goal to give his team a commanding lead. Red-hot Michigan Tech to the Great Lakes Invitational Championship Game for the fourth time in the last five years, but the Huskies fell just short of getting their first GLI title since 2012. It was a great overall team effort Thursday night, as the Huskies edged the Michigan Wolverines for their fourth straight victory. Sophomore defenseman Dane Birks got the Huskies on the board five minutes after the puck dropped for his first career goal. Cliff Watson would also add another goal in the second to give his team a 2-0 advantage. From there, goaltender Angus Redmond shut the door on the Wolverines, finishing with 23 saves in his second career shutout. Goals were hard to come by Friday night, as Redmond had another magnificent performance. The freshman finished with 24 saves for the Huskies, but his team fell short in a 1-0, overtime setback to No. 16 Western Michigan.

Robert Morris 1, Ferris State 0Ferris State 1, No. 6/5 Boston College 1(Dec. 29 and 30, Three Rivers Classic at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pa.) Alabama Huntsville spent the last weekend of 2016 in Minnesota, suffering a pair of heartbreaking losses at the Mariucci Classic. After outshooting Massachusetts 30-19 Friday and receiving a goal from Max McHugh, it would be UMass who came away with the 2-1 victory in overtime. The next day, the Chargers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Matt Salhany and Brandon Parker; but Mercyhurst would come back and win in extra time to send UAH home without a victory.

Cornell 5, Northern Michigan 2Merrimack 4, Northern Michigan 2(Dec. 28 and 29, Florida College Hockey Classic; Germain Arena, Estero, Fla.) Northern Michigan took a trip down south to participate in the Florida College Hockey Classic, but were unable to come back with a victory. McLain, a two-time WCHA Player of the Week in December, led Bowling Green and tied for the league lead with five goals last month. The junior from Baxter, Minn. highlighted the month with a hat trick in BGSU’s 5-2 win Dec. 3 at Lake Superior State. 2016-17 Wcha preseason polls

BoWling green taBBed as preseason Favorite ByWcha coaches and media

If the league’s coaches and media are correct, Bowling Green will end the 2016-17 regular season by hoisting its first MacNaughton Cup as champion of the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Falcons were tabbed as the league favorite in both the Mankato Free Press WCHA Coaches’ and the Bemidji Pioneer WCHA Media preseason polls.

The four schools that made the WCHA one of just two Division I conferences (along with Hockey East) to have at least four, 20-win teams in 2015-16 sit atop both polls in identical order: Bowling Green, followed by reigning MacNaughton Cup co-champions Michigan Tech and Minnesota State, and defending Broadmoor Trophy winner Ferris State. The four programs picked to hold home ice as the league’s new, on-campus postseason tournament begins next March are all among the top-15 nationally for wins since opening night of the 2013-14 season, with the Mavericks (76 victories) ranking fourth, the Bulldogs (67) tied for 10th, the Huskies (66) in 12th and the Falcons (63) placing 15th.

Demonstrating the competitiveness that is a WCHA hallmark, all four programs received first-place votes in the media poll, while Bowling Green (8) and Michigan Tech (2) earned the coaches’ nods.

Spots five through seven were also the same in both polls, with Northern Michigan, Bemidji State and Lake Superior State, respectively, expected to be vying for playoff positioning. Last season, the Wildcats posted their highest conference win total and finish (12 victories and fifth place) since the 2009-10 season, the Beavers won their most games (17) since 2011-12, and the Lakers enjoyed a six-win improvement behind one of the nation’s top-scoring freshmen classes.

WCHA coaches picked Alaska Anchorage to grab the league’s eighth and final playoff spot, ahead of Alabama Huntsville and Alaska. The media poll has the Nanooks finishing eighth and the Seawolves 10th, with the Chargers again ninth.

Ferris State senior forward Gerald Mayhew was the coaches’ and media’s choice as preseason Player of the Year. The Wyandotte, Mich. native ranked third in the league scoring race with 25 points (9g-16a) in WCHA play last year, while his 41 points overall (16g-25a) paced the conference. He ended his campaign by recording a point in five of six postseason contests (10 total), helping the Bulldogs to the NCAA West Regional final with five goals (including two game-winners) and five assists.

Minnesota State forward Parker Tuomie (coaches’ choice) and Ferris State defensemen Cameron Clarke (media pick) split the preseason Rookie of the Year votes. Tuomie, a native of Germany, finished 11th in the United States Hockey League (USHL) scoring race last season, scoring 54 points (30g-24a) for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Clarke was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (136th pick overall) of the 2016 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. He was named the 2015-16 North American Hockey League (NAHL) Defenseman of the Year following a standout season in which he tallied 50 points (9g-41a) in 59 games for the Lone Star Brahmas.

• UAH now sits at 7-13-2 overall and 7-7-2 in WCHA play heading into the New Year, after slipping in a pair of overtime contests this past Friday and Saturday night against UMass and Mercyhurst, respectively, in the Minnesota-hosted Mariucci Classic. The Chargers sit in a two-way tie with upcoming opponent No. 19 Minnesota State with 23 league points.

• The Chargers jump back into WCHA play on Friday and Saturday at home with a visit from Minnesota State at the Von Braun Center, which will be the Blue & White’s fifth home league series of the 2016-17 campaign. UAH holds an all-time record of 19-27-7 against MSU and a mark of 13-10-3 in Huntsville, with the last series ending in a pair of ties in 2015-16 on Feb. 12-13 at the VBC.

• Huntsville native Josh Kestner remains atop the UAH offense with a career-best 17 points (6g-11a) this season after chipping in an assist against UMass on Friday. After not recording a point against Ferris State on Dec. 3-4, Kestner has totaled two goals and three assists in four contests which has propelled him to rank sixth in points (17) and tied for eighth in assists (11) within the WCHA.

• Junior alternate captain Max McHugh reached 60 career points from 26 goals and 34 assists with the Chargers lone marker in the Mariucci Classic opener against UMass, giving the Seattle native seven goals and eight assists for 15 points this season. McHugh is tied for the team lead in goals (7) and is second overall in points (15) on the roster.

• Brandon Parker netted his fifth goal in seven games with his sixth tally of the season against UMass on Saturday to raise his season point total to 10 with an additional four assists in 2016-17. • In the 3-0 victory against RIT, junior goaltender Chris Nell set a school record with his eighth career shutout. Nell was challenged with 17 shots on goal by the Tigers, and remained steadfast though the 60:00 of action. With his first shutout of the season and eighth in his career, the Green Bay, Wis. native broke a three-way tie for first in the category of total career shutouts. Nell pushed Tyler Masters (1999-03) and current NHL-er Andrew Hammond (2010-13) down to second all-time, who each hold seven career shutouts in their time in the Orange and Brown.

• Nell is also the current leader in the career record book with his 2.16 goals against average and .919 save percentage through his 68 games played.

• It was 11:19 into the game when junior Mitch McLain notched his team-leading 12th goal of the season against RIT by coming in down low and taking a quick shot in the slot in 4-on-4 play to give Bowling Green the lead. The Falcons are now 6-0-1 when the Baxter, Minn. native scores a goal, and it is McLain's second consecutive game-winning goal effort.

• Shortly before closing out the first period against RIT, junior Brett D'Andrea was able to capitalize on the Bowling Green power play by netting his fifth of the year. D'Andrea was able pick up the rebound of a shot taken by senior Kevin Dufour to score the Falcons second of the period. With an assist later in the game, D’Andrea was able to earn his third multi-point night of the season and fourth in his career in Friday’s 3-0 victory. The Falcons have also gone undefeated in games in which D’Andrea has scored a goal (3-0-2) this season.

• For the 10th time this year, the Falcons held its opponent scoreless on the power play, en route to the team's second shutout on the year (3-0 vs. RIT). Bowling Green is now 6-3-1 when it holds its opponents scoreless with the man-advantage.

• The Falcons were swept by the Beavers earlier this season on the road, although Bowling Green still holds the all-time advantage by a 8-6-1 margin. While in Bemidji, Minn., Stephen Baylis notched the lone goal for the Falcons Friday evening, while Mitch McLain scored his first shorthanded goal of the season on Saturday night.

• Then-ranked No. 19 Ohio State is the only ranked opponent the Falcons have seen so far this season, and were swept in 5-4 and 6-1 finals.

• Bowling Green had many road series to kick off the season, and didn’t have its first full home series until the first weekend of November. In the fall, Bowling Green went 6-6-0 on the road, and 3-4-2 at home although the second half will balance out the home atmosphere for the Falcons.

• The second half of the season will present ample home ice advantage for the Falcons, as nine of the remaining 13 regular season matchups will take place at the Slater Family Ice Arena, including all five games of February taking place at home.

• Freshman netminder Justin Kapelmaster stole the show in the midst of a historic night between the pipes in the second game of the Three Rivers Classic. Kapelmaster kept the nationally no. 6 ranked Boston College Eagles off the board until 15:13 of the third period, making an astounding 58 saves in the 1-1 tie. Kapelmaster’s performance earned him a place on the Three Rivers Classic All-Tournament team, as well as a place in WCHA history. His 58 saves in a single game were the 12th most for a WCHA goaltender in history. Only six freshmen goaltenders in WCHA history have ever marked more saves than Kapelmaster did on Dec. 30 vs. Boston College in a single game. Kapelmaster raised his save percentage to .943 in the process, which is good for second in the nation behind Robert Morris Colonial freshman goaltender Francis Marotte.

• Sophomore goaltender Darren Smith ended the month of December on a tear despite a 1-0 loss to the Robert Morris Colonials on Dec. 29 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Amongst goaltenders with at least four games played, Smith was third in the nation in save percentage at .961, and posted one shutout in the process. Smith had a 35 save effort in the loss to Robert Morris to open the Three Rivers Classic tournament, and allowed just five goals over four starts and had three performances of 35 saves or more in the final month of the 2016 calendar year.

• In a special moment, three Bulldogs from the Pittsburgh, Pa. area were put together on a forward line to open the Three Rivers Classic tournament at PPG Paints Arena, home of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins against Robert Morris. Trevor Recktenwald (Venetia), Jacob Hetz (Glenshaw) and Tyler Andrew (Bethel Park) made up Ferris State’s fourth line on paper for the game vs. Robert Morris, and Head Coach Bob Daniels elected to start his physical Steel-City native trio to open the tournament.

• The reigning WCHA Rookie of the Year and Philadelphia native Corey Mackin got off to a slow sart following his torrid 2016 pace, but has turned it on of late to near some new career-high marks. Mackin finished the 2015-16 season with 10 goals, and already has seven during the 2016-17 season with 14 games to play in the regular season. Mackin netted Ferris State’s only goal of the 2016 Three Rivers Classic and has points in three of his last four outings.

• Ferris State owns a 9-2-1 all-time record against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in 12 games. Ferris State had won nine in a row against UAA before losing on Nov. 14, 2015 in Anchorage. The Bulldogs have only fallen once to the Seawolves in WCHA play, and are 8-1-1 in their last ten outings. Included in the last 10 outings is the 2014 WCHA Final Five Semi-Final, during which then Ferris State freshman Gerald Mayhew netted the overtime-winning goal to end UAA’s season and advance to the Final Five Championship game. The Bulldogs only win during the 2015-16 season in the two outings at Anchorage last year was a 3-2 overtime win, where current Missouri Maverick (ECHL) and then Bulldog captain Kyle Schempp fired in the game-winning goal on Nov. 13, 2015. Ferris State will finish the weekend having played six in a row in this series at UAA, as the Seawolves haven’t visited Big Rapids since Nov. 13-14, 2014.

• Senior forward and alternate captain Chad McDonald has started to shake his slow start to the season, and a weekend vs. the Seawolves looks welcome to the Battle Creek Native. In his last eight outings vs. UAA, McDonald has eight points. The senior is second among active players in career scoring with 72 points, and has done more damage vs. the Seawolves than any other team he’s seen in his four seasons in the Crimson and Gold. McDonald finished the first half of the WCHA schedule with points in four out of five games to snap a seven game point-less streak.

• #19 Minnesota State enters the New Year owning an 11-7-2 overall record and stands tied for fourth in the WCHA with 7-5-2 record.

• The Mavericks split a nonconference road series at Princeton in closing out their pre-Holiday schedule Dec. 16-17. Minnesota State, which lost 6-1 and won 5-4 vs. the Tigers, resumes play Jan. 6-7 when it takes on WCHA-foe Alabama Huntsville. In a series that dates back to the 1988-89 season, the Mavericks are 27-19-7 all-time vs. the Chargers and have gone 16-0-4 in the last 20 games vs. UAH. The last time the Mavericks lost to the Chargers was in 2001-02.

• A two-time WCHA Rookie of the Week award recipient this year, freshman forward Marc Michaelis finds himself atop the Minnesota State scoring chart with 25 points on 10 goals and 16 assists. The Mannheim, Germany native leads the WCHA in scoring, ranks ninth in the country in scoring and is tied for second amongst all freshmen skaters in the nation in scoring. Michaelis, who has accrued at least one point in 15 of 20 games played in his debut season with the Mavericks, enters the New Year riding a three-game point-scoring streak (1-4--5).

• Junior forward Brad McClure, who racked up 3-7--10 in the last eight games prior to the Holiday break, leads Minnesota State with 77 shots on goal. The Stratford, Ont., native ranks second on the Mavericks in points with 8-10--18 on the season.

• Junior forward C.J. Franklin, who leads the Mavericks with three game-winning goals, ranks fifth in the nation with six power play markers. He leads the Minnesota State with 196 face-off wins this year and with 30-40--70 in 98 career games, the Forest Lake, Minn., product stands as Minnesota State’s active career scoring leader.

• Sophomore defenseman Dan Brickley scored his fourth goal of the season in Minnesota State’s 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17 and stands fourth on Minnesota State’s scoring charts with 4-12--16 in 12 games this year. He leads all WCHA defensemen in scoring despite missing a month of playing time due to an upper body injury.

• Senior forward Michael Huntebrinker scored his third goal of the season in Minnesota State’s 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17. The goal is the first career game-winning tally for the Chesterfield, Mo., native and gives him 14-31--45 in 105 career games with the Mavericks.

• Freshman defenseman Ian Scheid has 1-6--7 in the last nine games. He has 4-9--13 on the year to rank second amongst all WCHA first-year blueliners.

• Sophomore forward Max Coatta, who has 8-12--20 in 56 career games, assisted on Nick Rivera’s goal in the Mavericks' 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17.

• Senior forward Jordan Nelson ranks second on the Mavericks with 166 face-off wins and leads the team in face-off percentage (.564). The Williston, N.D., native has 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 120 career games played.

• Freshman forward Parker Tuomie has 3-5--8 in 20 games in his debut season with the Mavericks and ranks fourth on the team with 55 shots on goal.

• Junior defenseman Clint Lewis, who stands tied for second on the Mavericks in plus/minus with a +8 on the year, has 21 blocked shots and 18 shots on goal in 2016-17.

• Minnesota’s freshmen have racked up 22-38--50 in 20 contests so far this season to stand fourth in scoring in the nation as a group.

• Minnesota State has outshot its opponents in 14 out of 20 games this year and rank eighth in the nation in shots on goal margin at +143.

• Minnesota State is in its 48th year of college hockey and owns an all-time record of 847-629-150 (.567). The Mavericks are in their 18th year of membership in the WCHA and stand 218-213-59 (.505) all-time in regular-season games vs. WCHA opponents.

Wildcatsnorthern michigan university• The Wildcats took part in the Florida College Hockey Classic on Dec. 28-29,

falling to Cornell, 5-2, and to Merrimack, 4-2. Northern Michigan was paced offensively by Dominik Shine (2g-1a) and Gerard Hanson (1g-2a). Darien Craighead (1g-1a) and Brock Maschmeyer (2a) also finished tournament action with more than one point.

• For collecting three points at the Florida College Classic, Shine was named to the all-tournament team. A year earlier, he became the third Wildcat to secure a spot on the Great Lakes Invitational's all-tournament team after finding the back of the net in Northern Michigan's games against then No. 10 Michigan and Michigan State.

• Shine now boasts a team-best eight goals in 16 games, more than his season totals in both 2013-14 (6) and 2014-15 (7). He netted half of his season total over the past five tilts. Craighead, Troy Loggins and Robbie Payne are tied for second on the team with five goals each.

• In December, Shine tied for fourth in the WCHA with six points (4g-2a) in six games. His four goals placed him in a tie for third with two other skaters. Last season, he was named the WCHA's Player of the Month in December after leading the league outright in three major offensive categories: goals (6), points (8) and shots (28). He tied Lake Superior State's Gage Torrel, the WCHA Rookie of the Month, for the league lead with two game-winning goals.

• With a goal each against the Big Red on Dec. 28, Shine and Craighead became the fourth and fifth Wildcats to reach the 10-point plateau this season. Entering its series with Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan's top five point producers are Robbie Payne (5g-9a), Hanson (4g-9a), Shine (8g-4a), Craighead (5g-6a) and Zach Diamantoni (1g-9a).

• Rylan Yaremko blocked five shots during the Florida College Hockey Classic, improving his season total to 46. He is now tied for fifth in the WCHA and tied for sixth nationally in this statistical category. He trails only Lake Superior State's Collin Saccoman (61) for the national rookie lead; he is tied with Michigan's Luke Martin for second among freshmen.

• The Wildcats scored three of their four goals at the Florida College Hockey Classic on the man advantage. Entering the tournament, they had converted on just 8.3 percent of their power-play opportunities. On the strength of their 3-for-12 effort, their power-play percentage (now at 10.2) reached the 10-percent threshold for the first time since Oct. 29 (then at 10.4).

• On Dec. 28 against Cornell, Northern Michigan netted both of its goals on the man advantage, going 2-for-7. The Wildcats only scored more than one-power play goal in the same game twice this season: at Ferris State on Oct. 21 (2-for-8) and at Alaska-Anchorage on Dec. 3 (2-for-6). Those three games account for nearly 55 percent (6-of-11) of their season total.

• Northern Michigan will take on Lake Superior State in back-to-back weekends to kick off 2017. This weekend, the Wildcats and Lakers will square off in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday at 7:37 p.m. and Marquette on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. These games will be the 118th and 119th meetings between the long-time Upper Peninsula rivals. Northern Michigan has only faced one other team, Michigan Tech, at least 100 times.

• Maschmeyer (2g-6a), Hanson (7a) and Shane Sooth (2g-4a) are the top three point producers against Lake Superior State on this year's team. Atte Tolvanen played two games against the Lakers in 2015-16, posting a 3.75 goals against average and a .872 save percentage.

• Last year, the Wildcats went 1-2-1 against Lake Superior State. Northern Michigan's six-goal outburst on Oct. 16 was its highest total of the 2015-16 campaign. During that game, a 6-3 Wildcat victory, Payne led the attack with his first career hat trick.
