ABOUT THE BEACONSNorthwest Christian enters the weekend with an 8-9 overall record and 0-5 Cascade Col-legiate Conference record. Th e Beacons have lost three straight games with their last victory coming at home over William Jessup, 83-73, on Dec. 9. Lindsey Shearer leads NCU. Th e ju-nior transfer from Western Oregon University averages team-highs of 14.06 points, 9.29 re-bounds, 4.35 assists, 3.1 steals and 0.41 blocks per game. Her 53 total steals is third in NAIA Div. 2, and her teammate Aly Bruns is sixth in the country in total steals as well. Shearer is fourth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.7) and total rebounds (158). She is seventh in the country in total assists. As a team, the Beacons are seventh in NAIA Div. 2 in three-point fi eld goal percentage defense holding opponents to 25 percent.

LAST TIME OUTTh e No. 9 Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team held off upset-minded North-west University, 74-70, in overtime last Friday. It was Eastern Oregon’s fi rst overtime game this season. EOU has played three overtime games the past three seasons, and all have been against Northwest. Th e Mountaineers were paced by Brooke Randall’s season-high 24 points. Th e junior was 7-of-12 from the fi eld and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Kyle Miller added 14 points. Chayla Jones had a team-high nine rebounds and Randall and Tina Miller each threw three assists. Eastern shot 37 percent from the fi eld, 9-for-28 from behind the arc, and 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Th e Mountaineers outrebounded NU, 42-33. EOU forced 28 turnovers, but committed 24. Northwest shot 45 percent from the fi eld, 7-of-19 from three-point range, and 17-for-22 from the free-throw line.

A NEW PROGRAM HIGHTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team continues to climb in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 and has a new program high ranking released Monday. Last week, Eastern had the school’s previous highest ever ranking at No. 10, but the Mountaineers received 32 more points in the poll this week. Eastern Oregon was No. 23 in the preseason poll before moving to No. 17, then No. 10 last week. Th e No. 17 ranking was the highest since being ranked No. 17 on Jan. 30, 2008, when EOU was 17-2. Th e Mountaineers had their previous school-high ranking of No. 13 during the 2003-04 season. Corban University, Oregon Tech, and South-ern Oregon all join Eastern from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Corban climbs back into the Top 25 at No. 22. OIT is two spots out of the poll with 56 points.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCKTh e Mountaineers are currently eighth in the country in turnover margin. Eastern Oregon has a 6.7 turnover margin. It is fi rst in the Cascade Conference. EOU is 14th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio. Eastern is averaging 15.0 assists per game which is third in the conference. Th e Mountaineers 16.0 turnovers per game is the lowest in the CCC. Eastern Oregon is forcing 22.8 turnovers by opponents per outing this year as well. Tina Miller leads EOU in assists per game averaging 2.3.

CASCADING AFFECTEastern sits atop of the Cascade Collegiate Conference in fi ve statistical categories. Th e Mountaineers are fi rst in scoring off ense per game (73.2), scoring margin (+17.2), free throw percentage (.749), turnover margin (+6.7), and three-pointers made per game (6.7).

ABOUT THE WARRIORSCorban University, the preseason favorite to win the conference, began the season 4-4 but have reeled off six straight wins. Th e Warriors are one of three teams in the conference with only one loss. Corban opened league play with a loss at Oregon Tech. Preseason conference preseason Player of the Year, Katie Steigleman, has been sidelined with an injury and may not participate this weekend. She is averaging a team-high 21.75 points per game, which is third in NAIA Div. 2. Th e Warriors are getting an incredible freshman season from Tara Vanweerdhuizen, who is averaging 11.43 rebounds and 10.36 points per contest. Corban is fi rst in the country in total blocks (100) and blocks per game (7.10). Th e No. 22 Warriors are second in the nation in rebounds (46.6) and assists (19.2) per game as well.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team picked up a Senior Night win over Northwest Christian University, 69-52.

Th e Mountaineers (16-9) (8-8) were led by a double-double performance from Rosebud Guthrie. Th e sophomore fi nished with a team-high 13 points and 10 rebounds. Guthrie shot 5 for 9 from the fi eld. Kyle Miller, Samantha Flett, and Kelsea Hurliman each added 12 points.

Eastern shot 48 percent from the fi eld in the victory. Th e Mountaineers made 9 of their 17 shots from behind the perimeter, and 12 of their 16 attempts from the free-throw line.

Th e game featured fi ve lead changes, all coming in the fi rst half, and four ties. Th e Beacons led by as many as three points three times in the fi rst half. Eastern Oregon’s largest lead was four points twice, including at halft ime, 29-25. Th e Mountaineers improved to 15-1 this season when they lead their opponent at halft ime.

EOU never lost the lead in the second half. Th e Mountaineers stretched their lead to 37-30 just into the second half at the 17:10 mark with a Guthrie free-throw. A lay-up from Jessica Kramer with 1:21 remaining in

regulation gave Eastern its largest lead of the game, 69-50.

Th e Mountaineers were outrebounded, 34 to 33, and committed 15 turnovers to Northwest Christian’s 14. EOU had a 16 to 12 assists advantage over the Beacons.

Hope Williams scored a game-high 22 points to lead NCU (10-17) (6-11). She added a game-high 14 re-bounds as well. Sheena Alexander chipped in 12 points. Northwest Christian shot 35 percent from the fi eld and 11 of 18 from the free-throw line. Th e Beacons were held to 1 for 13 from behind the arc.

WARRIORS SURVIVE IN LA GRANDE FOR WINFeb. 11, 2011

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e Corban University women’s basketball team escaped Quinn Coliseum with an 82-80 victory over Eastern Oregon University Friday.

Th e Warriors (16-10) (11-5) completed a regular season sweep over EOU. Corban had lost the previous seven matches against the Mountaineers entering this season. Corban was led by Katie Steigleman’s 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the fi eld. Jennesa Miller added 18 points, and Tess Bennett and Emily Tsugawa each scored 12 points.

Becky Buhler grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Warriors, who fi nished with a 36 to 34 rebounding advantage over EOU. Bennett threw fi ve of Corban’s 25 assists. Th e Warriors shot an astounding 57 percent from the fi eld, a season-high for an opponent against Eastern this season. Corban hit 7 of its 14 three-point attempts.

Eastern Oregon led by as many as four points in the fi rst half, 8-4, early in the game. A Bennett jumper in the paint gave the Warriors their largest lead of the fi rst half at the 8:56 mark, 25-17. Th e fi rst half featured six lead changes and four ties.

Corban spread a 41-37 halft ime lead to a 46-37 lead just into the second half aft er a basket from Miller. Th e War-riors would get their largest lead of the night aft er

another Miller bucket at the 16:33 mark of the second half, 52-42. EOU crept back into the game tying the score at 73 aft er a pair of Kyle Miller free throws with 3:12 left in regulation.

Seconds later, Samantha Flett would then give Eastern its fi rst lead of the second half with two more free throws, 75-73. Corban responded with an 8-2 run to take the lead back by four with 40 seconds left . Flett then hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to cut the lead to one. Th e Mountaineers would steal a pass on the ensuing Warriors’ possession, but miss a pair of free throws with seven seconds left .

Miller led three Mountaineer double-digit scorers with 19 points. Th e junior fi nished 7 for 15 from the fi eld, including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Flett scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and threw fi ve assists. Rosebud Guthrie added 17 points and seven rebounds. Eastern Oregon was 44 percent from the fi eld, shot 7 of 20 from behind the perimeter, and 13 for 20 from the free-throw line.

BASKETBALL HAS WEEKLY SHOWTh e Eastern Oregon University basketball programs will have their own radio talk show on Monday’s 12-1 p.m. on KUBQ 98.7 FM. Every show will be podcasted on EOUSports.com by the following morning. Mountaineer fans can tune into 98.7 FM and listen to EOU basket-ball analysis, game recaps, game previews, and interviews with coaches and players. Th e whole hour is devoted to Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s basketball. Th e show provides recaps of the previous weekend’s games and previews the upcoming weekend games. Th e show has inter-views with coaches’ and analysis from the show’s hosts. EOU Assistant Athletic Director, Barrett Henderson and John Mallory, will co-host each broadcast each week.

EOU LANDS TRIO ON CCC LISTKorrie Bourn, Kyle Miller, and Brooke Randall were each tabbed preseason All-Conference per-formers by the CCC head coaches. EOU was one of two schools to land three players to the pre-season list. Miller, a senior, averaged 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Bourn and Randall were the only newcomers on the list aft er transferring to Eastern from Spokane Falls Community College. Corban University’s Katie Steigleman was voted the CCC’s Preseason Player of the Year.

EASTERN TABBED SECOND IN CCCTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basket-ball team was selected second in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll. With fi rst-place votes from six coaches, Corban University is the preseason choice to win the conference title. Eastern Oregon and Warner Pacifi c split the remaining four fi rst-place votes, with the Mountaineers and Knights picking up two each. EOU and WPC each tallied 82 points to share second in the preseason ranking.

EOU OPENS SEASON IN TOP 25Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s basket-ball team begins the 2011-12 season at No. 23 in NAIA Div. 2. Th e Mountaineers were ranked 23rd in the country in the preseason poll Mon-day. EOU last appeared in the national preseason poll in the 2007-08 season, when it received 54 votes. Eastern climbed as high as No. 20 on Dec. 13 last season.
