Strategic Partnerships Development

• Formalised working agreements were set up with IUCN, the Ram-sar Convention on wetlands and the Convention on the Conserva-tion of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

• Conferences and meetings were attended of ZACC, PAAZAB, ALPZA, SAZA, EAZA, JAZA, CITES

Strategies• Finalisation of WAZA Vision and

Corporate Strategy Towards 2020, adopted at 64th Annual Conference

• Finalisation and launch of WAZA Aquarium Strategy for Conservation and Sustainability (Turning the Tide) adopted at 64th Annual Conference

• Establishment of a joint CBSG/WAZA Climate Change Task Force, chaired by Paul Pearce-Kelly (ZSL)

• WAZA climate change petition, ask-ing for a reduction of atmospheric CO2 to the safe level of < 350 ppm was sent to UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, just before the Copenhagen UN conference on Cli-mate Change (7–18 December 2009). The petition included 788 signa-tures from senior management of 249 WAZA member organisations.

Amphibian Ark• On 17th June 2009 the petition

for amphibian conservation was handed over to Dr Jane Smart, Head of IUCN Species Programme. A total of 75 196 signatures have been col-lected as well as 43,742.80 CHF via WAZA for Amphibian Ark work.

Year of the Gorilla 2009

• Participation in this UNEP led campaign, as partner. 109 zoos took part and used the provided information material (leaflets, posters, pins, stickers) as well as announced their activities on the campaign website. WAZA and IZE produced a resource manual (All about Gorillas) in 4 languages.

• Publication of a special edition of WAZA magazine about gorilla conservation, launched at the Inter-national Gorilla Symposium, held at Frankfurt Zoo, 9–10 June 2009. A summary of activities of the year was published as a supplement of WAZA News 4/09.

WAZA Financial Report

UN Year of Biodiversity 2010• Evaluation of WAZA branded con-

servation projects (published in the International Zoo Yearbook 2010).

• Preparation of the first WAZA book on biodiversity conservation.

• Establishment of partnerships in order to produce promotional material

• Donor search for support of biodiversity work within WAZA.

WAZA Training Grant 2009 13,200 € was spent for 7th Annual Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) Veterinary Workshop, Kenya and the capacity building workshops on animal care and management in the ALPZA region.

Heini Hediger Award 2009Karen Sausman of Living Desert, Palm Desert, USA was granted WAZA’s highest honour, having been a zoo director, artist, author, natural-ist and conservationist all at once. Karen served as WAZA president from 2006 to 2007.
