Three ’regions of disaster’
The melting ice
The drying lands
The rising seas
Some initial questions:
1) How do people respond to perceived risks?
2) What should we mean by resilience?
3) How may we conceptualize the entanglement of global causes and local effects?
4) How may we calibrate knowledge from different fields and of different scales?

Observations from fieldwork:
Hotspots of climate change– But climate change never comes alone
Climate change narratives– Different configurations of knowledge
Scenarios of catastrophe– People continue to engage with the present
Local worlds– Deeply implicated in global processes
Major uncertainties about the future– Discovering new potentialities

Challenges to the social sciences:
The constitutive object has broken down– all ’societies’ are perforated
The modern social imaginaries are obsolete– a global imaginary is emerging
What is ’the social’ at this age?– an elusive frame of temporary orientation
The future of the social sciences– they are on the verge of a renaissance!

The application process:
1) Stimulating application format2) Swift process of decision making3) Five thoughtful peer-reviews4) Reporting not too complicated
What difference has it made? The ERC Grant has made a huge difference to my own research; It has made an impact at the Department and at the University as a whole; Potentially it may contribute to a revitalization of the social sciences; It has paved the way for a substantial interdisciplinary collaboration.
