  • THERE IS A THEORY that Blake took his inspiration for Jerusalem from Shoreham’s clouded hills.

    Set beside the river Darent where it cuts through the North Downs on its way to the Thames, Shoreham is a village and civil parish of just over one thousand inhabitants about six miles north of Sevenoaks in West Kent. The probable derivation of the name is estate at the foot of a steep slope. Steep slope was from the Saxon word scor pronounced shor. The Darent valley was one of the major areas of Stone Age settlement and Shoreham is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

  • Shoreham is well known for its connections to the First and Second World Wars. There is a white cross cut in the hillside opposite the village church to commemorate the dead of WW1 and Shoreham Aircraft Museum, when opened in 1978, was attended by fifteen former Battle of Britain pilots. The village was also named by the BBC as the most bombed village in Britain due to the fact the Army took over several manor houses for operational use.

    London-born watercolour artist and mystic Samuel Palmer lived in the village from 1826 to 1835 and attracted many painters, poets and writers. He was part of a group of artists who followed William Blake and there is a theory that Blake took his inspiration for Jerusalem from Shoreham’s ‘clouded hills’.

    There is a Duck Race held yearly on the May Day bank holiday. The ‘duck’ has to travel along the River Darent from the war memorial in the village, to the bridge before the old Mill and can be anything from a shop-bought rubber duck to a model made by the entrant(s). The event is very popular with several hundred people turning up to line the river banks and watch. The money raised goes towards local charitable organisations.

    A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

  • Shoreham offers everything one needs for day to day shopping with the village store situated on the High Street selling everything from meat, frozen food and fresh bread to gas bottles, compost and bedding plants. The shop also provides a post office and a cash machine.

    Shoreham also has several public houses and a quaint tea shop called Honey Pot. Situated in close proximity is the award-winning Mount Vineyard producing still and sparkling wines and The Hop Shop at Castle Farm.

    For a greater selection, the cosmopolitan town of Sevenoaks is situated approximately 6 miles to the south with a wide range of shops, excellent restaurants and bars and a range of supermarkets including Waitrose and Marks and Spencer.

    Sevenoaks also offers an extensive range of leisure facilities including the Stag Community Arts Centre which has a theatre, two cinema screens and conference facilities. Sevenoaks Leisure Centre includes a 25m pool, wellness gym, exercise studio and martial arts. Shoreham (Kent) Golf Club at Darenth Valley Golf Course is situated in gently undulating and picturesque countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a mature 18 hole (Par72) parkland course.

    The village primary school is centrally located and caters for mixed pupils aged 4-11. The nearest state secondary school is Knole Academy which is a mixed school for 11-19 year olds. There is also a very wide choice of private schools in the surrounding areas.
