Her biography contains an impressive array of awards, and her work has appeared in and on the cover of numerous art books and magazines. “Texture and the effects of light and shadow have become important elements in my paintings. I am fascinated by the glow of reflected light on various surfaces. Painting on location on a regular basis has opened many doors for me. I cannot improve nature, but I an rearrange and simplify it to corre- spond to what I feel. Traveling abroad has opened up new vistas of color and texture for me. I paint to convey the enjoyment and excitement of what I see.” “However, my major goal is to evoke a feeling in people who view my paintings – peacefulness or calm serenity, happiness or nostalgia. I want to depict a place that the viewer wants to be, and I do this by concentrating on “painting the light” or “painting the mood” throughout my painting process rather than painting the things. I try to capture the moment in time that I felt when I experienced the subject by thinking about it constantly while I paint. If I can convey the things that I felt when I experienced the subject and convey my excitement, I’m happy about the work and ready to go try to make my next painting an even better one.”

January DEMONSTRATION

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

Rusty Jones amazed us with his seemingly effortless painting of this cliff in the Grand Canyon. He doesn’t usually work indoors — painting outdoors is his favorite thing to do, and he can execute as many as 4 or 5 paintings in a day. And he told us how to sell paintings on E-Bay.

Also, he delighted us with his sense of humor. If you would like to receive his monthly newsletter, sign in at [email protected]

CRITIQUE CORNER Bring your ―Work in Progress‖ in at

6:00pm or just come to watch

Critique Corner was an addition to the 2010-2011 RCAS general meetings. We started with only a few brave participants, growing throughout the year. Its purpose is for those who have a work "in progress" and would like positive feedback from the gathered group. We have an RCAS member "discussion leader" to facilitate comments. All art-ists love a conversation about art!! So be a person in need of critique on a work OR just an interested participant. Remember, we're all still learnin' and need positive suggestions, even the experienced artists. Join the group and bring a painting (only one, please) Tuesday, February 21 at 6:00pm for the Critique Corner.

Message from the President — Susan Martin

".

Also hugely helpful were Trudy Gomez, the assistant chair. (They and many others manned the computers, put up the panels (they earned ―sweat‖ points), velcro-ed and hung the art in an eye-catching manner. Debbie and I were overwhelmed with the expert, dedicated and cheerful work-ers!! Thank you, dear friends.

Susan

DESIGNING DIRECTIONS It’s February and the temperature is 75 degrees?? What happened to Winter? Ah well, we live in Texas – ―If you don’t like the weather – wait a minute, and it will change‖.

One thing that doesn’t change is how creatively amazing and mature our high school artists are each year. Have you seen the Young Peoples Show on the Li-brary’s second floor art gallery? See if you agree with the judge’s award selection. And, the second amazing fact is that Debbie Langham, a full-time school teacher herself, chaired this show ―in her spare time.‖ Ha! Please thank Debbie when you when you see her at the next meeting – she is usually the cheerful, friendly greeter at the door.

RCAS is on Facebook now. Please check out our page and add a comment. Be sure it is the page with our colorful paintbrush logo. (There is an old, outdated page with the RCAS logo in black and white which we are trying to get deleted).

An exciting event coming to the Arboretum in May – November: a Dale Chihuly glass installation! And they need volunteers every day which you will be hearing about at the next meeting – February 21. And Cecy Turner, our member who creates magic with watercolor will be doing the demo. Sign up for her Workshop.
