Reception:
November has been another super month in Reception. We loved the ‘Fire Fire!’ topic
and had lots of emergencies inside and out of our classroom! Last week we enjoyed a
performance of ‘The Wind in the Willows’ by the Image Theatre Company – thank you
so much to the PTA who fund this treat every year!
We have finished phase two of our phonics now we are so delighted with how well the
children are now blending phonemes to read and segmenting them to write. They are
also remembering the special words and loving writing in every area of provision.
We have also been really enjoying ‘buddy lunch’ on a Friday where our buddies take turns to
come and join us for lunch. It is a great opportunity to catch up.
This week our classroom has started to change once more as we begin our Christmas topic.
December is always a busy month in school, but a magical one too – for pupils, parents and
staff. There will be lots going on with the nativity, secrets stall, parties and more so keep
checking the weekly email for updates and please ask if anything is unclear.
We will also be having
daily visits from Ernie the
Elf.
Mrs Roberts
Year 1:
What a busy start to our second half of the Autumn Term. We have enjoyed lots of
great learning especially in our History topic where we have been learning about im-
mediate history and the connection of our families through toys. We had a visit from
‘Teacher Ted’ who wrote us lots of letters and gave us lots of information about his
classroom. We worked out that he was the same age as our Grandparents and that
he had actually belonged to Mr Munslow’s mother. When we visited Ilkley Toy Museum
we saw similar teddies and could make comparisons and had a lot of fun completing
the quiz as we explored the museum. Certainly a great place to visit if you get the
chance.
We have also enjoyed having visits from parents during some maths sessions. The chil-
dren loved being able to show their parents what we do and it was great to share with
them how Year 1 works. Our Christmas preparations are now well under way and we
look forward to welcoming you to our Nativity in a couple of weeks.
Year 2:
November has been action packed in Year 2, starting with a brilliant trip to Skipton Castle. We all learnt
loads of interesting facts thanks to our great guides. Particular favourites were the banqueting hall and the
dungeon. Our visit has led to some super work in English and has led to great recounts using 'talk for writing'.
We have also started to write some fact sheets and we are learning about writing questions using question
marks and then fact finding to write the answers. We also used our visit to help inspire us to design and
draw our own
castles. We then went on design and make our own castles with a moving drawbridge in DT.
In science we finished our healthy living topic
by thinking about how keep our bodies clean
and healthy. We designed our own packed
lunches, with lots of healthy food, it's amazing
how many different healthy foods you can
think of. We also carried out a science experi-
ment looking at what works best to get rid of
germs from our hands. Well done to the three
volunteers who had oil and cinnamon all
over their hands to act as germs.
In maths we have become re-
ally confident with multiplica-
tion and division have been
working hard to learn our 2, 5
and 10 x tables. There was
some super homework looking
at arrays and groups. Thank
you for all your great ideas.
Finally, we have been busy preparing for our class assembly, working out who would like to show which
things, remembering all they needed to say and passing the microphone like professionals.
Well done Year 2. It has been great preparation for our speaking and acting for our Nativity!
Wow Year 2, what a brilliant November!

Reminder:
School closes for the Christmas Holidays on
Friday 22 December @ 3.15pm.
School re-opens for pupils on
Tuesday 9 January 2018 @ 8.55am.
Year 3:
November has brought another fun filled month for Year Three, we have been
extremely busy in Literacy this month, working hard to write instructions, initially
based on the book ‘Beware of Boys’, where we enjoyed creating the ingredi-
ents list and method for ‘Girl Pie’, we used alliteration to create an interesting list
of ingredients and imperative verbs in order to create the method. We are now
moving towards writing real instructions for making a sandwich that we have
designed. We will create an ingredients list, equipment list and method from
their experience of making their own sandwich.
We have been focusing on multiplication and division in maths, working hard to
try and learn the 3,4 and 8 times table and using different methods and tech-
niques to multiply and divide. We have become experts on ‘4 for the price of 1’
sums and are getting much better at solving missing number problems using in-
verse.
November has been a great month for our Topic work, not only did Year 3 cre-
ate and present a fantastic class assembly based on the Stone Age but they
were also given the opportunity to experience life in the Stone Age through visit-
ing the Stone Age site at Murton Park. On arrival at Murton park we were given
authentic Stone Age clothing to wear, this not only made us feel the part but
also kept us nice and warm! Although it was a very cold day, the rain managed
to hold off for most of the time and we didn’t let it spoil our fun. We had a fan-
tastic experience, grinding grain to make flour using traditional Stone Age meth-
ods, hunting like a Stone Age man, investigating artefacts, cave painting and
producing our own Stone Age inspired pottery. Huge thanks to the helpers that
joined us for the day, we couldn’t have gone without you!

Year 4:
We have had a very busy month in Year 4. In the middle of the month we visit-
ed Murton Park, York where we learned all about life in a Viking settlement. The
children were dressed up as Vikings when we first arrived and split into three
families. Staff who were with them (Mrs Bownass, Mrs Smith and Mrs Daguzan)
were Anglo Saxon slaves, which the children really enjoyed! Each family had a
mum and a dad who were the head of each family. During the day the chil-
dren were involved in different tasks including making bread in the longhouse,
creating lamps made from clay, learning how to be a Viking guard, collecting
wood for the fire and gardening. Lunch was held in the banqueting suite with
the Lady, who needed an official food taster in case she was poisoned. She
demanded to be entertained so the children told her jokes and kept her hap-
py. A group also sang a song together for her entertainment. At the end of the
meal the Lady asked for one of the slaves (Mrs Bownass) to be put into the
stocks where she was humiliated (in a very light hearted way) and had water
tipped on her head. As you can imagine, the children really enjoyed this.
In the afternoon, the children continued with their tasks but then at the end of
the day the emergency bell was rung to say that we were being attacked by
other Anglo Saxons and the children had to protect their settlement using skills
that they had learnt during the day (which they all remembered). It was a
great day and one I am sure that they will all remember.
The staff at Murton Park were very impressed with the knowledge of the chil-
dren and their behaviour. We had many positive comments from the staff dur-
ing the day.
In Art we have been busy creating our contribution to the Christmas corridor.
The lanterns look beautiful and the stained glass window is amazing. If you get
chance to come and have a walk through school, please have a look at all of
our hard work.
This month, in English we have been studying the story of Erik the Viking. The chil-
dren have enjoyed reading the different adventures in each chapter and get-
ting to know the characters. We have written a character description of Erik,
hot seating Erik first and using evidence from the text. This week we have fin-
ished the work on Erik. We have written our own chapter with a new adventure
for Erik and his men. We have also designed a new front cover for the book.
In Maths we have been working very hard on our multiplication. We have worked on quickly recalling our
times tables facts and using place value and known facts to answer questions mentally. The children are
becoming more confident when using a formal method to answer questions when that is needed.
We are now looking forward to the very busy month of December and all the fun and interesting times
ahead. The Christmas production is coming together nicely and the children are learning the words to the
songs and are enjoying learning the dance and playing the instruments. Mrs Bownass & Mrs Smith

Year 5:
Year 5’s November has passed MUCH
too quickly!
In class we have worked hard on writ-
ten multiplication and have made
great progress. We have also worked
on instruction writing and newspaper
reports, improving and varying our sen-
tence structure with all kinds of adver-
bial phrases, expanded noun phrases and relative clauses.
We really enjoyed working with the history trainee teachers who came to ask us about the kind of activi-
ties we have done in our history work. You can see Archie in the photo doing a grand job of explaining his
work!
We have had quite a musical kind of a month with A LOT of Christmas singing going
on! We also enjoyed visits from the accordion players who quite often come and
preform their latest learning to us after their lesson. The closest we get to under-
standing how much skill is required by them, is to pat our heads and rub our tum-
mies at the same time without messing our hair up!
The Image Theatre Company has been one of the great hits of the month with their
interactive performance of The Wind in the Willows. Many thanks to the PTA for
funding this again for us! One of our class had recently read the story, as recom-
mended by their parents, and completed their reading challenge homework from
it – a poster to persuade others to read the book.
Now we are looking forward to three weeks’ worth of festive delight – advent, Christmas performances,
parties and of course, Egyptian mummies! J.

Year 6:
November in Year 6 has really been
about inspiring our pupils to gain
new skills, learn about different ca-
reers and develop leadership skills.
Our month started with Museum and
Library Take Over Day. Y6 were
amazing at running both Skipton
Library and Craven Museum. Those
at the library made amazing cura-
tors, ran craft activities as well as
leading WW1 artefacts handling ses-
sions.
Later in the month we gained lots of
new skills and knowledge during our
first aid session run by Dr Jennings.
This included children learning basic
first aid, as well as having a go at
CPR. Finally to finish the month off we have had a
visit from Rolls Royce Engineers and also been
lucky enough to visit the Rolls Royce Bankfield site
in Barnoldswick to see how titanium is made into
aircraft propellers- some of our pupils demonstrat-
ed outstanding knowledge, understanding and
are certainly budding engineers of the future!
We have also managed to fit in some Christmas art
( and of course English and Maths along the
way! ).
We are looking forward to a busy December- in-
cluding the annual Y6 Gingerbread House Chal-
lenge!
