Happy Easter Everyone
Have a lovely break.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SKIPTON’S BOWLERS I am delighted to be able to tell you that in response to my query
for a result of play, the text message came back that
Skipton has won the Division 3 Grand Final for 2018. Congratulations to all of those who played on the day and to all
who have filled the teams throughout the season. Unfortunately that will need to wait until we resume after the break as there are deadlines to
meet for all publications. It was a very windy afternoon for us all.
On Saturday 24th March Preliminary Final: Having had to postpone play in the
Bowls last weekend due to last weekend’s two days of Total Fire Ban, the Skipton’s
Team travelled down to Derrinallum on Saturday to play Camperdown in the delayed
Preliminary Final at Derrinallum.
The morning started out with the weather looking as though it may intervene again,
but once play started in the afternoon it turned out to be fine and sunny.
Congratulations to all of Skipton Players, they defeated Camperdown 103shots to 77
shots. Well done all.
On Sunday, 25th of March, the players again met at the Club to set out in their
respective “Fours” to meet the challenges of their opponents in the Grand Final.
Many thanks Barb for sending SCN the photo of the winning Team
The Team went in to
the Grand Final with
just one change, Bev
Grist and Barb Grist
in one game each.
Players named here in their respective fours All winners for the season.. Results page 19.
There were ‘Emergency’ players on the day and those some others who have
played throughout the season all contributed to the overall victory.

Where have the months gone?
Already doing the March
column. Early in the month I was sitting on
the park bench near the Emu Creek Cafe having a
coffee with my wife Tania and Tony and Janine
Walker from Linton. We were chatting away when I
looked around and saw how overgrown the creek area
was, which got me thinking.
Shortly after that we spoke to a local resident who
also stated his concern for the creek area. I made a
few prompt emails and phone calls to see what could
be done. I subsequently met onsite with Michael Allan
from Corrections Victoria and I arranged a crew to
come and whipper snip and clean up the area.
I am hoping that the work has been done while I am
away in New Zealand. The crew come out and do
community work as part of their repayment to the
community. There is absolutely no reason why any
local should feel insecure with this crew in town as
they are well supervised and no threat to the
community. If the first round of work goes well I will
endeavour to get more visits by the Corrections crew
on a regular basis.
It is great to see the improvement works being done
on the Beaufort Road with new curb and channelling
and eventual resealing of the road. With these works
in mind, please pay attention to all speed restriction
signs and road work speed limits of 40 km/h.
Remembering that the workers on site would love to
go home to their families, not to hospital. Whilst on
the topic, please pay attention to the Lismore Rd with
the current re surfacing works around the Mt
Widderin area.
I will endeavour to make it to the football club to get
around to meeting everyone before round 1. I will
need to trade in my Dunnstown apparel for some
Skipton gear if anyone can help me out.
Some of you may have passed the station in recent
weeks to see some major works going on. We are in
the process of erecting new fences and installing new
gardens and lawns at the station and residence.
Hopefully we can be moved in before the end of
March.
Just a friendly reminder of police
attendance & times:
Being the only member in town, I work an 8 hr shift
at varying times of the day.
If I am working and not at the office, I will have the
station phone diverted to the police mobile.
If I am unable to take your call, please leave a
message and I will return your call as soon as
possible.
If I am not working and you call the station, the
phone will be diverted to Warrnambool.
If you require urgent police assistance call 000 and
they will call me to attend to any urgent matters.
I thank you for your cooperation and look forward to
the years ahead. Regards Craig Walker.

Skipton Garden Club News. March, 2018.
At our March meeting the Garden Club were able
to discuss our invitation to the Western District
Garden Clubs Conference.
The front was decorated with a lovely picture of a
grass tree, (xanthorrhoea) which reminded us of
the country we would travel through to get to
Naracoorte, South Australia, the venue for the
Conference on Saturday 28th April.
Speakers this year will be Paul Dipuglia, from
fertilizer gurus Neutrog, and Brian Wagner from
Wagner Roses. Added value of course from the
plant stall offered, and the input from each Club
represented, as well as the annual catch up with
friends and fellow gardeners, and perhaps a
thought this year for support for friends between
Penshurst, Caramut and Hawkesdale, and those in
the Gazette district who have lost homes and
gardens in the recent fires.
We all hope for rain before then of course, the
sight of our own parched gardens will be a shared
experience for all of us out west, wonder how we
have all fared?
We have to let Naracoorte Club know by 12th April
of numbers attending. (cost $30.00 for the day,
catered of course.) Please talk to your friends,
and to Lilla and Sharon if you want to attend.
Drawbacks of course are the distance to travel and
the need for a reliable car, we do have a list of
motels and accommodation places in Naracoorte if
anyone is interested in an overnight stay, and
sharing transport is a good option, but we need
interest shown now, to get organised.
And yes, we’re all parched and tired, and hoping for
rain, the plants most of all. But it has been
interesting watching what’s “dun good” as Lilla’s
young son had it many years ago, and what is never
going to thrive in it’s position without shade (which
is so slow to grow). Sad to see trees uprooted so
unexpectedly, but a minor miracle to see some
tough old roses still blooming!
We also have news of the 2018 Garden Design Fest
in November. Two weekends of garden visits to
some of the iconic gardens of rural Victoria,
Ballarat, Bendigo, Macedon Ranges, the
metropolitan area and the Mornington Peninsula
Details will be released on the website:
[email protected] and the updates will
be sent to us at the Garden Club for members’
information. A Rotary fundraiser, and sounds like a
great day out, whichever you choose.
Don’t forget, if you are looking for private trips
with family or friends, we have the Gardener’s
Gazette, Autumn 2018 is with us now, and lists a
multitude of gardens that are open on a regular
basis, as well as special shows and events.
Creswick Garden Club this year is presenting Jerry
Coleby-Williams on Saturday July 28th, and this
year we must try to get to the Australian Plant
Society Native Plant Sale in Bacchus Marsh on May
12th. Borrow the Gazette from us if that suits
you, give us a ring to come round for a cuppa to
Lilla’s place or we can drop it off to you.
And time again for the weekly watering session –
2ml in the gauge is really no help at all!
Please take care in the garden, and do keep in
touch.

P.S. In Spring, in a good year, a drive thro’ Linton
on the Linton-Pigoreet Road, through the light
forest and to the Clarksdale Bird Sanctuary, may
surprise you with acres of our own version of
xanthorrhoea flowering under the trees.

STREATHAM CRAFT GROUP
On March the 13th four members travelled to Hamilton to
receive information re the Regional Art Australia’s part in
the Wool Conference at Bendigo in October
The Regional Art have purchased the wool and are asking
craft groups to help with the knitting/crocheting of scarves
for the Conference attendees.
The aim is to make 500 items for the Conference and the
Streatham group will knit 10, or more, by the end of May.
Shelley Husband was the second speaker. She taught
herself to crochet, 5 years ago, and began to design her
own patterns; she spent much time on the computer. In
2012 she began to sell patterns.
Shelley has also produced 8 books. In Book 2017, she had
73 of her designed patterns. Her Business name is “Pin
Cushion”. She and has a shop in Hamilton.
On Tuesday March 20th, our Streatham Craft Group hosted
our “Annual Share Day”. As usual we were well
supported with approximately 80 visitors.
The standard and variety of craft was above excellent.
Several of our members were unable to attend, and
because we are a very small club, we had 4 “fill-ins” who
did an excellent job and we appreciated their assistance.
There were only 5 members present.
Thank you to Pauline in the kitchen, and Michelle who
had a stall and donated an extra gift to the club.
We had two speakers for the day, Jacinta Warham, and
Gail Orval, both from Hamilton. Jacinta spoke briefly
about the Wool Conference in Bendigo in October, and
displayed a variety of completed scarves for the function.
Gail had a wonderful display of Temari Balls, she spoke
on how she learned to make them and how they
originated.
The balls were introduced from China to Japan around the
7thcenturary A.D. They were called “MARE” meaning
ball.
With time Temari became an art with the upper class, with
women competing to create more and more beautiful
Temari Balls.
Gail has been stitching for just over 4 years and has made
in excess of 300 balls. She is one of eighty-six foreign
members of the Japan Temari Association, and one of just
four Australian members.
Polystyrene balls for the Temaris are used for ornaments
and gifts; and needs several meters of material covering
before stitching the decorations.
Gail donated a ball for the day, and one lucky lady from
Ballarat was very happy!
This was a very happy day. Everyone there enjoyed the
varieties of the craft, the fellowship, a well stocked stall,
and an excellent afternoon tea.

Principal’s Message We have had the first meeting of the new School Council
and we welcomed Natasha Frisby, John Connell and Cate
Elshaug onto Council. Again, I would like to thank
outgoing councillors, Ange Gowans, Sally Wills and
Amelia Pollock for their significant contribution to council
in 2017. I am pleased to announce that Les Meek is once
again our council President, with Anthony Mulcahy Vice
President. Secretary is Claire Dowling and Treasurer is
also Les. The other councillors are Scott Barr, Gavan
Corbett and myself. Due to the increased size of the
school, as well as increased interest in council, it was
decided to apply to the department to increase the size of
council to 13 members and we should have confirmation
of this soon. Council was presented with a draft of the
2017 Annual Report. This now goes to the Department for
their approval and then we will have a public presentation
of the report in Term 2. Council also approved the final
day of school this year as a pupil-free day.
Next week is our last week of term. Can I remind you of
our farewell to Karen Bradshaw at our final assembly next
Friday beginning at 12:00pm.
Calvin Tromp, Principal
Last Thursday we had the last event of our swimming
season, the inter-school carnival. It was another great day
where the school pulled together to host our neighbouring
schools and our children got to compete and demonstrate
their skills.
Thanks to Amelia who organised the program, to the
parents who helped set up and clean up, to the Parents’
Club for catering, and the teachers for their input.
It has been a successful term of swimming and all of our
students have grown in their water confidence and skills.

Community relief fund launched to support fire affected communities
Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) has partnered with Bendigo Bank to establish a Community Relief Fund in support of community members affected by the Southwest Victoria fires.
The Fund aims to support communities across Colac-Otway, Corangamite, Warrnambool, Moyne, and Southern Grampians areas where the fires have destroyed homes and impacted primary producers.
The Fund provides a formal channel for the public to donate money directly to affected communities and is designed to achieve positive outcomes for the community, by working directly with local recovery committees and structures to inform and drive the distribution of funds.
Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said emergency management agencies and local communities faced tough conditions last weekend with high temperatures and strong winds, on the back of an extremely dry period.
Fire fighting and rescue crews attended more than 160 grass and bushfires and responded to more than 1,000 requests for assistance.
The Community Relief Fund is a vital part of encouraging affected communities to play an integral role in managing their own recovery, by being part of the Fund distribution process,
along with councils and the emergency management sector. Community members who want to help can donate to the Fund, which will be distributed collectively across impacted communities, rather than individuals or specific groups.
The Community Relief Fund is facilitated through a Memorandum of Understanding between EMV and Bendigo Bank. It is delivered through the Bendigo Bank branch network, and has already been used for the collection and distribution of donated funds following emergencies. The Fund was utilised in Victoria’s Scotsburn community following the 2015 December fires, with $82,000 of donated funds being directly provided to the affected community.
Funds raised will be used for a range of locally identified charitable initiatives such as clean-up activities, business support or counselling, temporary fencing, and water quality control measures.
Chairman of Cobden and Districts Community Bank®, James Green, said the local branch and wider Bendigo Bank network were keen to do all they could to help local people following the fires. “Cobden and Camperdown Community Banks have put an initial $5,000 each into the Community Relief Fund.” "Further funds raised now will be ready to be distributed to those in need, when and where they need it."
Skipton Community News Page 22
The two days of the weekend of 17th and 18th of March were
declared Days of Total Fire Ban and with the very strong winds
fires that began during the night due to “dry lightning” spread
throughout the dairy farming communities of the Corangamite
Shire and neighbouring districts.
Although obviously “after the event” SCN could only publish
general contact information last edition but during the week I
have received valuable information from Corangamite Shire with
more specific contact details of how we in Skipton & District and
further afield can assist those affected by the awful fires.
I am including the more relevant of the media information I have
received from Corangamite Shire during the week for readers of
Skipton & District in SCN this edition (omitting details specific to
those who are directly involved) because I believe that farmers
and businesses in Skipton & District are deeply affected by what
has been seen on our news services since the St Patrick’s Day
Fires throughout the Corangamite Shire and concern also to
those people in other locations to our west in Penshurst,
Caramut, Hawkesdale and the Gazette District.

The fire at Terang and Cobden is now contained.
Firefighters have been able to stop the spread of the
fire. There is currently no threat to communities, but
you should continue to stay informed and monitor
conditions.
SMOKE FROM PEAT FIRES
A number of peat fires continue to smoulder in the Cobrico
area, causing smoke / health issues for residents. The Relief
Centre in Terang was opened last night to provide refuge for
residents impacted by the smoke.
Peat fires smoulder for a long time and can be difficult to put
out. Smoke contains fine particles, water vapour and gases
including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen
oxides. Some peat fires may produce sulphur compounds which
can be odorous.
A fact sheet is available on the DHHS website
(www2.health.vic.gov.au) with details about peat fire smoke.
Please keep monitoring the VicEmergency website:
www.emergency.vic.gov.au for updates.
