2004 Season Preview

While the 2004 UC Santa Barbara men’s water polo team returns just nine players for its 2003 team, the Gauchos hope that quality trumps quantity. Senior Brian Alexander (Cambria, Calif./Foothill HS), a Third Team All-American in 2003, leads the returnees. As a junior, Alexander scored 70 goals, the most by a Gaucho player in ten years, the seventh most in school his-tory and the second highest total in the NCAA last year. In doing so, Alexan-der led UCSB to 14 wins, the most by a Gaucho team since 1994. Alexander’s natural position is defender, but he could play a variety of positions this season. Head coach Joe O’Brien expects to use him inside, as well as on the perimeter. “Brian has the ability to do a lot of different things,” O’Brien said. “We will rely on him in a number of ways.” UCSB’s second-leading scorer from 2003 is also back. Andrew Schoneberger (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), a senior driver, scored 36 goals last season and will be expected to contribute in a big way again. “Andrew has been a very important player for us the past few years,” observed O’Brien. “I expect him to have an outstanding senior season.” A key to UCSB’s fortunes in 2004 might be the play of sopho-more two-meter man Matt Dale (Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS). The only experienced two-meter player on the Gaucho roster, the 6-foot-4 Dale had a solid freshman campaign with 12 goals, but he will need to take it to another level as a sophomore.

“Matt is stronger this year than he was last year,” O’Brien said. “He really played well offensively toward the end of last season and if he can keep going in that direction, he could have a good year for us.” Other returnees who will be count-ed on by UCSB include sophomore driver Ross Sinclair (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS), who scored seven goals last season, junior driver Ramiro Saldain (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal HS), who had 13 goals in

2003, and junior driver Jarrod Muenter (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS), who had nine goals in 2002 and sat out last season.

Chris Gronow (Melbourne, Australia/Melbourne University), a junior transfer from Melbourne University in Australia, will give the Gauchos a solid newcomer. Gronow, a utility player, has been a member of the Australian National Team, compet-ing in the World Championships and the World University Games.

“Chris has a great deal of interna-tional experience and he should re-ally be contributing more and more as the season goes on,” O’Brien predicted. Bret DeMuth (Cupertino, Calif./West Valley College), another junior transfer, will also compete for play-ing time at the driver position. Perhaps the biggest key to UCSB’s chances in 2004 is the goalkeeper position. Junior transfer Jon Bonafede (Alta Loma, Calif./Mt. San Antonio College), who redshirt-ed the 2003 season, is slated to start. He is long and rangy (6-foot-4), and with a year to adjust to the Division

I level, he should be ready to step-in to the starting spot.

“Jon had a year to fi gure out and get a feel of what this level is like,” explained O’Brien. “He is like,” explained O’Brien. “He is a talented player and the harder is a talented player and the harder he works, the more his confi dence he works, the more his confi dence goes up. He is a hard worker, so goes up. He is a hard worker, so his confi dence should continue to his confi dence should continue to go up.”

Bonafede’s expected back-up will be freshman James Street will be freshman James Street (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS), (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS), who is also a rangy 6-foot-4.

Those qualities were exemplifi ed by Tim McCormick, a varsity water polo letterwinner at UCSB in 1981 and 1983. McCormick served as the team co-captain in 1983. After graduating from UCSB in 1984 with a degree in business economics, McCormick went into the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant, fl y-ing F-14 fi ghter jets. McCormick died in 1991 as the result of an automobile accident. Each year a Gaucho water polo player who best exemplifi es those qualities put forward by McCormick will be awarded the leadership award.

• The UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Athletic Department has a gradu-ation rate of 83%. The 83% mark is 16% above the graduation rate of the University as a whole. In fact, a recent U.S. News & World Report survey ranked UCSB third nationally in graduation rate among all NCAA Divi-sion I schools.

• UC Santa Barbara has three consecutive Big West Conference Com-missioner’s Cups. The Commissioner’s Cup is considered the all-sports championship for the Big West Conference.

• In the past fi ve years UC Santa Barbara has had more than 150 Academic All-Big West honorees, more than any other conference school.

• In 2002-03, UC Santa Barbara had fi ve teams qualify for NCAA postsea-son competition, and over the past fi ve years nearly 25 have accomplished the feat.

• Last year alone, UC Santa Barbara had seven conference athletes of the year. In the past fi ve years, more than 25 have been honored. In addition, UCSB had nearly 50 all-conference selections in 2001-02 and in the past fi ve years, there have been nearly 250 all-conference athletes.

• In the past 20 years of NCAA Division I competition, UC Santa Barbara has produced more than 150 All-American athletes.

• In 2002, UC Santa Barbara’s men’s and women’s basketball teams each won their respective Big West Conference basketball tournament. UCSB is the only current member of the league that has won both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the same year and the fi rst since 1990.

• UC Santa Barbara has produced 15 Olympians, including four Gold Medal winners. Most recently, swimmer Jason Lezak and men’s volley-ball player Eric Fonoimoana, won Gold Medals at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

• Through the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program, UC Santa Barbara athletes have become an important, contributing part of their community. Whether it is a food drive, a toy drive for underprivileged children, a read-ing program in local schools or volunteer sports clinics for kids, Gaucho are giving something back.

• UC Santa Barbara Athletics is a department of stability and success. UCSB’s 15 head coaches not only have outstanding records in their re-spective sports, but a great deal of stability as well. The 15 have combined for 171 years at UCSB, an average of 12 years per coach. Six have been UCSB head coaches for ten years or longer and three have been in Santa Barbara for more than 20 years. Seven of UCSB’s head coaches were Gaucho student-athletes.

The University The Athletic Department• UC Santa Barbara’s meteoric rise to distinction—from a teaching col-lege to world-class university in just over 50 years—is a phenomenal success story in modern higher education. It is with great pride that UCSB celebrates its three Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics won by UCSB professors for their landmark research. Alan Heeger, professor of physics and materials, shares the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for devising the electrically conducting plastics that could revolutionize computing, Engi-neering Professor Herbert Kroemer shares the 2000 Nobel Prize in Phys-ics for developing layered semiconductor and low-energy laser technol-ogy used in ultra-fast computers, satellites, cellular phones, compact-disk players and other consumer goods. Together with the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry won by UCSB Physicist Walter Kohn, these pioneering ac-complishments demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary research, a hallmark at UCSB.

• UCSB’s international status and the eminence of its faculty are widely recognized and celebrated. UCSB’s renowned faculty numbers about 900 and also includes fellows of the National Endowment for the Humanities, recipients of the National Medal of Science, and members of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering.

• An elected member of the prestigious Association of American Universi-ties, the vibrant, energetic campus ranks with Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley among the leading institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada.

• Recognition of academic quality takes many forms. One of the most prestigious is support from the National Science Foundation. UCSB is home to eight national research centers and institutes, including six that are sponsored by NSF. For example, the Institute for Theoretical Physics brings together the world’s foremost theorists to study problems overlap-ping the specialized subfi elds of the discipline.

• UCSB has been selected as one of the fi rst three California Institutes for Science and Innovation by Gov. Gray Davis. The California NanoSystems Institute, a research partnership between UCSB and UCLA, will receive $100 million annually, which will be matches two-to-one by private in-dustry. The institutes are expected to produce scientifi c advances in fi elds critical to the future of California’s economy.

• The quality of the UCSB faculty’s scientifi c research has, for the fi rst time, led the Institute for Scientifi c Information to place the campus among the top 10 of the top 100 federally funded universities in the nation according to its new Science Watch ranking, which is based on citations-per-paper score. UCSB ranks number four among public universities. The prestigious report includes ratings of fi rst-place for the university’s departments of physics and materials.
