24 UCLA Water Polo History
Bob Horn
A name synonymous with UCLA water
polo for 28 years is Bob Horn, who
retired as the Bruin head coach fol-
lowing the 1990 season after leading
his squad to a third-place NCAA finish
and a record of 24-8. In his prolific
career he guided the Bruins to three
NCAA titles, four runner-up awards and
seven third-place finishes. UCLA won 13
league titles with Horn and his 1988
team captured the Club National Championship, marking the first time a
team made up entirely of collegians won the Club National title.
Horn tutored 36 first-team All-Americans and nine Olympians. He guided the
Bruins to 50 straight victories over five years and coached four undefeated
squads. He retired with an overall record of 487-188-8 and a league record of
102-62. Selected as the 1965 water polo Coach of the Year, he also doubled
as the UCLA swim coach from 1963-74. In 1976 he was inducted into the
United States Water Polo Hall of Fame.
Guy Baker
Guy Baker, who led UCLA’s men’s and
women’s water polo programs to seven
national championships in a ten-year
span, left the Bruin program January
9, 2001 to become the full-time head
coach of the U.S. Women’s National
Water Polo team.
Baker established UCLA as the
dominant program of the nineties with
four NCAA men’s titles (1995-96, 1999,
2000) and three national collegiate women’s titles (1996-98). He was named
National Coach of the Year four times (1995-96 men, 1997-98 women) and
coached the Women’s National team at the Sydney Olympics. In the summer
of 2003, he led the Women’s National Team to a World Championship gold
medal in Barcelona, Spain, and in January 2005 he accepted the position of
Head Coach of the U.S. Men's National Team. Baker’s combined record at
UCLA was 265-97 overall and 64-28 in league games.
Three of Baker’s athletes were named National Player of the Year
twice each – Coralie Simmons, Sean Kern, and Matt Swanson. In all, Bruin
athletes were named All-America 52 times and eight competed in the Olympics
under Baker.

MPSF All-Academic Honorees (Since 1998)
Goalkeeper Parsa Bonderson was UCLA water polo’s first CoSIDA All-
American in 1998. He became the Bruins’ second selection in 1999.
Dr. James Puffer played an integral role in the success of the men’s water polo
program and UCLA Athletics as a whole. Puffer was a three-year water polo letterwinner
(1969-71) and member of two national championship teams (‘69 and ‘71). He also at-
tended UCLA Medical School and earned his doctorate in 1976. Puffer attained a family
practice residency at UCLA Medical Center upon his graduation. He was named Chief of
the Division of Family Medicine in 1983 and helped to make the discipline a department
in 1997 of which he chaired until 1998.
Dr. Puffer was also an instrumental figure within the UCLA Athletic Department
serving as a team physician and the Chief of Sports Medicine until his departure in 2001. He
was an Olympic team physician during the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, Korea. In 1991,
Dr. Puffer was instrumental in raising funds to endow the men’s water polo program when
its existence was at risk. He served as a mentor to UCLA athletes and coaches alike.
In December of 2001, Dr. Puffer left UCLA to assume the position of Executive
Director of the American Board of Family Practice in Lexington, Kentucky. Although he
will be greatly missed, Puffer stated that he could not pass up “the opportunity to provide
effective and dynamic leadership to my discipline.”
It was in honor of his leadership and devotion to UCLA that the Dr. James Puffer
Loyality and Contribution Team Award was created in 2001.
The Dr. James Puffer Award (right) is on display
in the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, along with the
Jack Bariteau Most Inspirational Award (left).

Dr. Albert Carnesale Dan Guerrero Ken Weiner
Ken Weiner enters his 12th year as Associate
Athletic Director-Business Operations at UCLA and
his 25th year overall with the university. His duties
include the administration and supervision of six
Bruin sport programs, including Baseball, Women’s
Soccer and Men’s Soccer,Women’s Swimming and
Diving, Women’s Water Polo and Men’s Water Polo.
Weiner is the chairman of the NCAA Men’s Water
Polo Commitee. He also oversees new business and
project development and capital improvements
for the department. In addition, he supervises the
athletic facilities division, the operations of UCLA’s
sports practice and competition venues, game and
event operations, department and team travel and
UCLA Camps and Clinics.
Weiner is responsible for several major capital im-
provements for Athletics, including the renovated
J.D. Morgan Intercollegiate Athletics Center, the
new Hall of Fame, the Jackie Robinson baseball
and Easton softball clubhouse construction and
renovations, the Drake Track/Marshall Field reno-
vation, Pauley Pavilion interior upgrades and the
North soccer field construction. Current projects
underway include the renovation of the Acosta Stu-
dent Athlete Training Center and the construction
of the new KNAPP Football Center. Planning for
futureimprovements include a new aquatics center
and a renovation of the football practice facility.
He participates on a number of campus steering
committees on behalf of Athletics including the
Campus Facilities Coordination, Campus Project
Review and the Alumni Advisory Board. Weiner is
a member of NACDA and IAAM.
Prior to his appointment at UCLA Athletics, Weiner
co-founded and served as Associate Director of the
UCLA Central Ticket Office and continues to serve
as the liaison between the Athletic Department and
the CTO. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from
UCLA in 1978 majoring in Psychology. He gradu-
ated with honors and was bestowed a Chancellor’s
Marshall award for service to the university. He
and his wife Caren have two children, Nicole, 20,
and Kevin, 17.
On April 25, 2002, UCLA Chancellor Albert
Carnesale announced that Daniel G. Guerrero had
been named UCLA’s eighth Director of Athletics,
succeeding the retiring Peter Dalis. A former
Bruin baseball player, Guerrero, who assumed
his duties on July 1, 2002, exudes the pride of
a student-athlete who is now calling the shots at
his alma mater.
Guerrero, one of the most respected and talented
administrators in intercollegiate athletics, has rap-
idly placed his mark on the program as the director
of athletics at UCLA. Hailed as one of the nation’s
leading athletic directors, his first three years in
this position have resulted in unprecedented suc-
cess for the Bruins’ broad-based athletic program.
Guerrero has clearly established a pattern of “im-
age and substance” that few in his profession can
match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the
nation for NCAA Team Championships (97) won,
a number that continues to grow.
During Guerrero’s tenure, UCLA teams have won
11 NCAA national championships, finished second
eight times and have had an additional nine Top
Five finishes. A staggering 55 teams (of 69 possible)
have qualified for NCAA post-season competition
and the football team has appeared in three bowl
games. The program has also won 21 conference
championships, produced 178 All-Americans and
featured four Honda Award winners, including the
2003-04 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.
Furthermore, during the 2004 Summer Olympic
Games in Athens, Greece, 57 Bruins participated
as athletes or coaches, representing the United
States and 13 other countries. They earned 19
medals, including eight gold medals.
UCLA has finished third (2004-05), third (2003-04)
and sixth (2002-03) in the race for the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
(NACDA) Director’s Cup.
Guerrero, 52, received his Bachelor’s degree from
UCLA in 1974 and played second base in the Bruin
baseball program for four years. Born on November
10, 1951 in Tucson, AZ, he is married to the former
Anne Marie Aniello and they have two daughters:
Jenna (22) and Katie (18).
Albert Carnesale became Chancellor of the Uni-
versity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on July
1, 1997. As chief executive officer, he leads an
institution comprising more than 37,500 students
and more than 27,000 faculty and staff; is respon-
sible for all aspects of the University’s mission
of education, research, and service; manages an
enterprise with an annual budget of more than $3
billion; and serves as principal spokesman for the
university community.
Under Chancellor Carnesale’s leadership, UCLA has
continued to garner recognition and accolades for
excellence across the full span of its enterprise.
The Chancellor strongly supports the crossing of
academic boundaries, an area in which UCLA has
a distinct comparative advantage, given its broad
range of disciplines on a single campus.
UCLA’s research program has thrived during
Chancellor Carnesale’s tenure. In 2003-04,
UCLA spent almost $750 million in competitively-
awarded, extramural contracts and grants — one
of the highest levels of research funding among
all universities in the United States.
Prior to assuming the chancellorship of UCLA in
1997, Mr. Carnesale was at Harvard University
for 23 years, serving as Provost of the University
from 1994 to 1997. He held the Lucius N. Littauer
Professorship of Public Policy and Administration at
Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government,
where he served as Academic Dean (1981-91), and
Dean (1991-95). His earlier career included posi-
tions in the private sector and in government.
Mr. Carnesale has represented the United States
Government in high-level negotiations on defense
and energy issues (including the Strategic Arms
Limitation Talks, SALT I, with the Soviet Union),
and has consulted regularly for several government
agencies and companies. He holds bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and
a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, has been awarded
three honorary doctoral degrees, and is a fellow of
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a
member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
